My opinion as a (long) retired Canadian soldier who takes a great interest in these things. Hegseth is a genuine multi-tour combat veteran, rank of Major, Bronze Star, deep and abiding concern for the troops and no time for woke approaches and politicized senior officers. Well regarded by the rank and file. Graduate of Princeton. Worked at Bear Stearns and Manhattan Institute of Policy Research. Executive Director of Vets for Freedom. Flaws like everyone else and probably fewer than most (especially members of Congress), but all in all the best choice in a very long time. He should be awarded another medal for surviving the inane hectoring he had to endure during the confirmation hearings. He will be confirmed. Live with it.

My opinion is X.AI50 breaks 1, perhaps reaches 10 ATH, if conditions are right. But broader forces are at play now. We’re moving into really unknown territory. And these entities are shrewd. Not literally true. I've seen a long format interview with him. He wants women out of field combat, especially infantry. He specifically said there are many roles women can play including being pilots. But he has personal anecdotes from when he was in the field and women created dangerous distractions and have not been held to equal standards with men. Also, many previous SecDefs were not high ranking officers. Weinberger was a captain, which is much more normal. Some SecDef haven't even had military service.
