I think Togashi is using Morena as a narrative stand in for everything he wanted to do with GYRo before the story evolved past the characters relevance. Which also gives him a perfect opportunity to subvert expectations and reintroduce him as an ally to Gon

Togashi is doing with Morena what he wanted to explore with Mukuro in Yu Yu hakusho. Both of their backstories are tragic and involve sex slavery and intense dehumanization. If i am not wrong, Gyro was originally supposed to be that. So, i can see him discarding Gyro for Morena because of his health and age reasons.

The thing is, if Togashi wanted to do a Gyro arc....why wouldn't he just do a Gyro arc? The progression is Chimera Ant arc -> 13th chairman arc -> Succession War arc. 13th chairman leads pretty naturally into another Gon arc, we end it with the focus fully on Gon with only a minor appearance from the zodiacs and Kurapika who take focus during the succession war and without even an implication of the upcoming dark continent voyage and shift in perspective. I don't think it's accurate to say that Gyro evolved past relevancy, it was a conscious choice on Togashi's part that can be traced back to a single narrative decision (shift to Kurapika). This would lead one to believe that it was Gon who evolved past relevancy and concluded his character arc before he got to Gyro, prompting Togashi to switch the focus to Kurapika and cut Gyro off as a necessary sacrifice, but that was in the same arrc as gyro was introduced, so presumably Gyro came after, or at least at the same time, as when the conclusion of Gon's character was decided. Now Togashi is a notoriously fickle writer, if there was anyone who would go "nah" after setting up such an obvious narrative hook it would be him, so there is definetly a chance that he just ditched Gyro and introduced Morena as a substitute, but I'm still not really convinced Let him cook

What'll make it epic is how the narrator briefly explains he's on the ship but no one knows they're in the midst of the most evil being in existence. He'll be shown sipping wine in the corner of the hall in all-black suit, shirt, tie and glasses...then we'll never hear about him again in this arc. It'll be epic.

Gyro sounds like the most YuYu Hakusho-esque character in HxH lol Also, I thought he was just a side character whose story was meant to be taken as "food for thought", some sort of cautionary tale about human nature, what makes us human etc. I didn't remember the part where they mention that he will meet Gon at some point! It might make for an interesting plot

A chimera ant jas the same level of talent as Terror-Sandwich, and unlike the fourth prince, Gyro is one of the best in the world at making things happen with every tool at his disposal. Worst of all, with an overwhelming sense of self like that, theres no shot Gyro isnt a specialist. I'll be honest, I had comsidered beiefly that Moreina had actually been killed and replaced by Gyro for a while.

I remember when I watched the anime I was so damn sure they would reveal that Gyro became Meruem since they removed his almost encounter with Gon, it would've made perfect sense narratively if you think about it. I still want to see him, but considering they intentionally removed the part hinting about his future in the anime, Togashi saying that Gon's main story was done as well as Morena basically being Gyro v2 makes me think that Togashi ultimately decided that he needed to focus on the other parts of the story and leave Gyro behind.

I honestly think that Marina has taken the place of what Gyro was supposed to be. Both were "meat" as children and saw themselves as sub human and what not and both want to see humanity suffer and be dismantled. IDK with the pace hxh has come out I just can't see the succession war ending, the dark continent being explored plus whatever repercussions occur from the trip and then ontop of that having an arc where Gon gets his nen back, becomes the MC again and gyro inacts some master plan to take over? IDK I just personally don't think its going to happen. I feel like both characters have a bit of a link to chapter black from yu yu Hakusho. They are obviously different but all dive into the darkness of humanity. But just at the pace we are going at I just don't see it happening. Just the other day I had my whole sense of time broken when I saw a post from 7 years ago talking about the different heights of the princes in the succession war. I ended up looking up release dates and the succession war literally started 10 yeads ago at this point.. And while things have really started to pick up with the pace and Martial Law has been declared but unless something happens where the war is somehow ended prematurely via Chrolo stealing one of the artifacts or something of that nature I still think we have another 40-50 chapters at minimum if he wants to resolve the contest in a way that's satisfying to the readers because there are just so many moving parts.. Idk I am really hoping we don't stop at 410 I am absolutely hoping we can go to 415-20 because of where the story is but man I hope we get a finish to the series in the same way I hope George R R Martin finishes GoT..

He is adding more mysteries or plot points rather than narrowing them down. Hard to believe Togashi will go that far with the plot. I actually believe this might be the last arc with few chapter including stuff about Dark Continent, Ging, Pariston, Gon and Killua and that's it. Everything will finish with most of the characters on Black Whale dead, Gon being still home doing his life, maybe Killua visiting him and also doing his life. If Togashi will actually want to go as planned first, that will be insane because if you ask me personally, the moment where the anime ended looks like just the beggining of HunterxHunter world and plot story. HxH does has potential to go as one of the longest mainstream mangas together with One Piece.

Does Gyro being final villain-esque make anyone else think that everyone on the black whale is pretty much dead and Gyro will try to lead the world afterwards. He was stated to have a great following before he became an ant and with the Kakyoin Empire on track to self destruct, Kurapika v. Tserreidnich v. Spiders v. Hisoka, the whole HA thinking they can do anything about anything that's about to happen on the ship. It will be interesting seeing if anyone makes it out though, I can imagine a panel of someone coming back from the trip and seeing propaganda posters against the HA/for Gyro. Lmk what you guys think.

​@@jackshiggins3170 about your first point, gyro and morena have a distinct difference which is what makes gyro so interesting: he has honest friends who will follow him to the grave. if he's so evil, why the fuck were welfin and ikalgo so attached to him? its meant to remind you of ging, someone who also have friends that speak about him like he's jesus, cause he's just that charismatic. in my opinion he's meant to be a parallel to gon and ging, and gon might even join him, his true nature is a mystery, we know his goals and nothing else second: back when CA was airing everyone thought the whole kurapika/phantom troupe plot was cut short, cause the manga was obviously ending after such arc right? then he created the succession war arc which picks on that, and the zodiacs, and the ging/pariston bromance, and picks up the ideas of CA arc in other words he continued every.single.plotline that was left in the story EXCEPT for Gon and Gyro, the two people he once wrote were gonna meet. if he wants to finish the manga, why not write an arc about the main 4 together again that also picks up on gyro? why leave gon in the island, imply at the end of the previous arc that gyro is gonna come back, all just to throw that to the garbage one year later because he wanted to focus on 300 new characters he created to finish the manga? i'll sound dramatic, but the only reason people say gyro's not coming back, is cause they have no idea how much planning manga takes and don't respect togashi's vision. people act like manga arcs get planned on a weekend, that shonen authors have no idea what they're doing, then they look at the one author who's allowed to have like 15 years of hiatus, which he probably spent writing the best possible story (cause how else do you write an arc so big as succession war), and say "oh the main protagonist and the implied main antagonist? he just ditched that. he built up their relationship for 8 years then ditched it to make something else people didn't even want tos ee" togashi can't care less about the time he has, he either dies or finish the manga, which would include gon and gyro coming back at some point, he knows this is what people wants, HE PLANNED IT

Tseridnich for example is one of many new villains introduced in this arc and is the only specialist besides Morena to my knowledge so even then it's easy to see what I said as hyperbole to draw attention to a pattern
