Who Is Moomin And Why Does His Friend Snufkin Have A Video Game? | New Gameplay Today

Moomin, the popular Finish comic character from the 1940s, is getting a video game in 2024 - and we're ready for it. You could be forgiven for not being familiar with the character. Though he has made appearances in North America, he's never reached the popularity of his comic contemporaries like The Peanuts Gang or Mickey Mouse. I only became aware of the character after visiting developer Remedy in Finland in 2015 for our Quantum Break cover story. Members of Remedy's team educated me on the character and I brought back Moomin merchandise as souvenirs for my family.
I had not thought much about the character since then, but recently, Moomin and his friends have been slowly invading my life prompting me to wonder if Moomin is on the verge of a United States popularity breakthrough. Developer Hyper Games and publisher Raw Fury must have thought the same thing, because it is releasing a Moomin video game on March 7.

Moomins are big in Finland (obviously) but also in Scandinavia and especially Japan. It’s also quite well known in the UK and Northern Europe like, Netherlands, etc. The Moomin books are very good and the early 90s Japanese anime series is my favorite Moomin animation.

Aside from picture books, comics and TV-shows, the series actually started as a series of novels. The thing that makes Moomin fascinating and easy to appreciate as an adult, is that it's contemplative and tackles psychological stuff that you don't find in a most children stories, but in a manner a child can still understand; like for example there's a storyline about a girl who had turned invisible due to having been raised by an emotionally neglectful guardian and there's one particularly infamous recurring character representing depression and sense of isolation that comes with it, who freezes everything she touches and thus everyone is afraid of her, ensuring she ends up being all the more alone. The Moomin stories also have suprising amount of autobiographical elements in them; like the character of Snuffkin here was based on Tove's ex partner, with elements of that relationship dynamic apparently seeping into Snuffkin's interplay with Moomintroll.

In the UK, back in the 80s, we had a fuzzy-felt stop-motion adaptation of The Moomins. The thing I remember most about it was that the theme music, though quite lovely, was kind of melancholy at the same time.

I read the novels as a kid. They were pretty brilliant. The franchise is all about comfy mysteries. My nickname is based on our name for Snufkin, and I've come across many others who picked his name too.

I watched some episodes of the 80s-90s cartoon show. I like it a lot. Very comfy show.

Moomin has been massive in all of Scandinavia for years, especially in Finland (duh!) and Sweden. And it's fairly big in Asia as well, especially Japan. Jump on the Moomin hype train! It's going places! Tove Jansson was a fantastic person, and we can all learn a little bit about life from her, and Moomin!

Moomin is popular is Sweden as well. If I remember correctly I think there also was a moomin game on game boy

You can watch the 90s Moomin anime series from Moomin official KZbin channel (dubbed in English). It’s my favorite Moomin animation.

Moomin's nothing new, but if you look at video games in general, then you might notice that a lot of old IPs like Moomin, Smurfs, Marsupilami, Tintin, etc seem to have been receiving games over the past few years. Might be just the age of the IPs and maybe related to IP rights or just people trying to make money of all the "old stuff" some people grew up with

Its funny, i went down the rabbit hole on Moomin sometime last year, and was compelled enough to watch the show for free on youtube. Snufkin's actor is perpetually on one 😂 So yeah weird timing with the game coming out now. Kyle may be on to something.
