Language is not only his best song but one of the greatest EDM songs of all time. May not see it in the stream count, but if you’ve been on the scene for a while, you will hear it a lot. Released nearly 10 years ago and some people are still closing their sets with it. No cap.

you have such an incredible ear and mind for listening to music, as a porter fan it was so satisfying to see you immediately see the difference between his older music (sad machine and GTAW) and his newer music (Shelter, LATS and SC) - older music being more abstract and instrumental, newer music being more lyrical and emotional have to recommend Porter’s friend Madeon and his latest album Good Faith, if you’re looking for more edm dudes turned into singer songwriters (who worked with and sang on shelter too btw)
@bigbyallsmay8992
@bigbyallsmay8992 2 жыл бұрын
God I have so many thoughts on this but I don’t want to be annoying, I’ll just say that you should know that Porter entered the scene in the peak of the edm rave bro era AND THRIVED and each album was an effort on his part to redefine himself and release sincere music! His later works pivot away slightly from edm and I’m sure you’ll love them

It was absolutely uncanny and a bizarre (but welcome beyond words) experience. Every time a new single was released as a preview of the album, I needed to hear those lyrics, about that particular situation, on that exact day. Absolutely the only time I can say between "Worlds," but especially "Nurture," the former which helped me deal with so much death and depression and guilt, and then when I decided to pursue my dream as a game designer and better myself but then had doubts, the latter came along, and gave me the "it's ok...this feeling you are feeling. Enjoy the ride and positivity of your passion" that helped me feel ok, and honestly, excel to the level that my team and I could have never dreamed of in this industry that is so, so hard, and because of that, that I have never had an artist take me on a journey to explore my darkness, but then lift me out of it later as much as Porter Robinson. You nailed it it your comment, I'm just still trying to process it all. Thank you for the comment.

Shelter is such a good song, the MV makes me cry lol Sad Machine is amazing, someone did a mashup up of Fix You by Coldplay and this song and I still have it on my phone! It’s called “Fix Your Sad Machine” lol Idk why “Look At The Sky” made me cry while you listened to it. But “Somethjng Comforting” is beautiful. The whole Nurture album is awesome lol Yes I can’t wait until you react to Nurture! Please also react to Illenium because he also has emotional/mental health themes to his EDM. But it’s a totally different style of EDM. He also got nominated for a Grammy this year! So proud of him too. Madeon also has done similar things, Shelter was their collab together. Also sort of related, but Krewella also touches on mental health in their last 2 albums, Zero and The Body Never Lies. But also includes songs about female empowerment too. They’re one of the few popular EDM girlies and I love them so much, they also incorporate their Middle Eastern heritage into their music too.

You hit it right on the head with the “hug” analogy for nurture. It is beautiful, and in the times we’re living in, it feels hopeful, sunny, and like a big, warm hug. Hope to see you react to the full album ♥️. Wind tempos is one of my favorite songs and his piano playing on it, is just beautiful. I went with a friend to see him live and when he played that song on piano we just embraced and it was a moment I’ll never forget.

Imo I wouldn't recommend Virtual Self or Air2Earth for someone who isn't heavy in the scene. They're in a completely different area and they are very live and dance focused, while porter's music is more so the type to appeal outside of the dance floor more.

The line "There must be something wrong with me" in Something Comforting is from the song "Aoi Shiori" (Blue Bookmark) by Galileo Galilei, which is a reference to the Anime Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day. If you haven't heard any of Galileio Galilei's music, I'd highly reccomend it. They were a Japanese Indie band that made some really unique music that is a very heavy influence for Nurture.

Nurture is an awesome album! He wanted to experiment with the Japanese style of music composition which is different to the wests. Its songs also sort of go through his life after Worlds album where he suffered from depression and writers block. The songs touch about his self doubt, his depression, feeling of worthlessness but also hope and show his overcoming or realizations that brought him out of it. His song Trying to Feel Alive has this really sweet lyric that is dedicated to his fans where he says maybe somebody somewhere finds the summer in the songs you write, and maybe its the gift I couldn't recognize, trying to feel alive. He's a really sweet guy. Created this app during covid that was like his songs that you would listen to with other people all over the world at the same time so that the song was bridging a connection between you and that person bonding over the love for the music. He did so because he felt sad for all the people who were alone because of everything going on, and wanted a way for his fans to be able to connect with other people and remind them that they aren't alone. Should check out Second Sky too, a festival he puts on to raise money for Burkitt lymphoma (which his brother suffered from) he used to put it on in his parents guest bedroom back in the day as if I am remembering right it started as a means to help pay for his brothers treatment, could be wrong there. Either way dudes a legend among legends.

Absolutely. It's both exactly as intended, and still crazy how it pulls that off. The song along is uplifting, and the video initially absolutely heart-breaking...but having the song be uplifting due to the "message" trying to be delivered in the video's narrative, as a contrast and surprise hope for combating that loneliness, confusion, and darkness (which I can't get into without spoiling one of the best music videos of all time, Shelter. It's that, and Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt," and then everything else. :)

This was so fun to watch :) definitely recommend checking out the full albums. Worlds was written to be a love letter to those fantasy worlds we live in for a time, that are so built up and vivid yet at some point we say goodbye. And because his first album was so successful and influential he struggled with following it up, hence the themes we see in nurture. You can't go wrong with either one. Love the video, look forward to seeing more.

I got into porter fairly recently, probably within the last year or so and I am so glad I did. His music is just so much different than other edm, you can tell it's not just edm for the sake of being edm, there is some heart and emotion behind each lyric and composition. It's also cool how you can kind of see porter's personality kind of shine through in his music, he likes to craft stories into each of his songs with delicate introes and outros, setting down the song gently and giving you a kind hearted feeling but there's still the pep of the edm side, It's really a super neat style and I love it!

Porters music helped me thru so much in life, saw him live last year, I recorded some of the songs that he played, got them uploaded to my KZbin after the concert The morning after, I realised what happened that night, I cried all morning, seeing him live was one of the best things that ever happened to me, a month before the concert, I met my girlfriend, and about one year after the concert (April 2023) me and her started talking about marriage, I would 100% let Blossom or Sweet Time play at my wedding (From Nurture btw) and one of Porters songs (Look at The Sky) is featured in Forza Horizon 5, which takes place in Mexico (Where my girlfriend is from) Every song on Nurture reminds me of her in some way, and for sure one of the first concerts I want to go to with her is a Porter Robinson concert, both her and Porter are extremely important in my life, and the reason that I am alive today

What really hooked me onto Porter was his live performances and remixe, he kinda mixes all his songs together, adds other artists style, other artists remix his stuff and then you suddenly have this extended porter + friends verse where its just pure vibes, positivity and fresh music mixed in with old stuff. Pretty much the original songs are great, but when he adds them together and puts an additional spin on it it just really hits home for me. My favorite is when he mixes Sad Machine x Something Comforting :] I wanna someday move someone like Porter moved me Great video, +1 sub

Goodbye to a world is my favorite song from Porter Robinson, and also the one that makes me cry the hardest-more for the associations I've made to the song than the song itself. My aunt's voicemail box is always full. Not because she's bad at emptying it, but because she holds on to the voicemails she receives. Because of this, even after grandma passed away, we have a recording of her asking about dinner plans, and promising to see us in a couple days. _Goodbye to a world_ makes me think of recordings like that, and how they could fail, deteriorate, and become corrupted over time. The ghost in the machine can't live past the machine's death, after all...

I recently started listening to Worlds again after some years and I was instantly reminded how much I enjoy that album. It's been almost 10 years and its still a fantastic album.

Great video. Love it when people discover that EDM is more than just a kick and a bass. I would very highly recommend listening to the album "bb u ok?" by San Holo, a bit more EDM like, but still very pure and a great listen!

his best friend Madeon does the vocals on Shelter. For the Worlds album, he used a Vocaloid program to get the vocals. And lastly for the Nurture album, he does his own vocals with pitch processing! He is truly one of a kind when it comes to production!

Fun Fact: for “Something Comforting” the main melody was actually created when he was at his lowest point in his life. He pretty much made this song to comfort himself and spent months trying to complete the song.

First off, id recommend watching the Shelter music video. It goes along with the lyrics of the song which were wrote by Madeon one of porter's longtime friend. Look at the sky was my most listened to song last year and Something Comforting is very much worlds like imo. I promise you the rest of Nurture wil blow your mind :)

I discovered Look at the Sky by accident in an advert for the music video. That was a year ago. Next week, Porter's coming to my own backyard to perform in Edinburgh... his music has taken me on such a journey of discovery, and inspired me to take up music production at college. I wonder if I'll be able to thank him.

Porter has such an ability to evoke both negative and positive emotions at once, that gives his music such emotional weight. One reason I love shelter is because its the song that broke me out of my depressive numbness. When then makes nuture following very much like a nuturing hug, a sort of musical "I'm glad your still here".

I have no idea why… I listen to these songs everyday… but man, watching you listen to it, appreciate the good in it, and analyze the lyrics made me cry haha. Good tears but I’m probably emotional right now haha.

Just a friendly reminder that Porter also has a more aggressive approach through the alias "Virtual Self" with some classic EDM/dance hits, alot which could plant themselves in a cyberpunk universe with no problem.
