I was pretty annoyed to see animation students just not getting the messages in the animation. Good animation is not only summed up in beauty and good technique, but it is important to convey the story through the smallest details. I wonder if they are studying just to make something beautiful for the eyes and not the heart.

They did understand that though? Idk why you assume that they don't. They absolutely understood and saw the heart in the video. However, they focused mostly on what they were learning in class. Looking at the different techniques, discussing animation weight, run cycles, how a character runs will tell you a lot about the character, indicating that time has passed by changing the camera angle and the placement of the character, mentioning timecharts, etc. I"m sure they want to be able to convey heart in their work. Nobody goes into animation, with that much of a workload, and doesn't place heart or any messages into their work.

So this is the translation of the message Rin gets on her tablet at the end. To Rin From: Dad There was far too little time left after you were born. I wonder how much love I was able to show after your mother passed... Seeing you cheerful and well gave your old man courage. It really would have been better if we could have gone together, but I couldn't make it work. I thought I wanted you to forget everything and go forward...knowing you, you'll be okay. You'll realize your loneliness, and surely remember me. I believe that you'll grow strong and read this letter. I wish we could have made more memories. I'm sorry. When you were little you probably didn't understand well, but now you should. I'll say the words from that day once more.

You really do have to watch this MV several times. Am surprised these animation students missed to much! Such as how they are celebrating her birthday and xmas at the same time. How he's doing all the things a father would do all crammed into a short time. The obvious that the planet is about to be destroyed by colliding with another runaway planet/moon. How the father, whilst trying to spend as much time with his daughter, is designing and building the space capsule and rocket her will later send her into space with. All this speculates that her birthday isnt on xmas day, nor that it's actually her birthday or xmas day on the day they are celebrating, cos they dont have time. How she likes drawing and he designs the OS and tablet to create environments based on her drawings, and him teaching her to use the tablet. That she's been alone in VR ever since she was launched into space!

@@aldin.2714 Of course they're going to be focused on the techniques more than the message 😭??? Both are important, but they were specifically here to look at the animation. Just like bigo93 said, you have to watch this several times to fully understand and notice everything. I've watched this several times and never caught onto any of what bigo93 said, and I'm teaching myself how to animate. I only saw the main story element of a father sending his daughter off to save her life when the world was going to end. I wish people would give these animation students some slack :/ You have to learn the basics of how to animate before you can even begin to start including small storytelling elements into your animation.

Honestly there's so many small details but also some heavy stuff. Like how the lyrics of the song relate to the narrative of the video. A fun fact is that when this premiered it was shown live in Shibuya, Tokyo on a massive billboard. Porter Robinson gave a small speech which had Japanese subtitles, the crowd was wild. Porter is also a massive anime fan, so this was an incredible opportunity. Rarely do we see events like these happen, Porter is an American Producer, Madeon is French, working with one of the top Japanese Animation Studios, it was completely unheard of at the time. ---- Some thoughts on the video and the story ---- (A bit about the video) So the message is an interesting detail, the idea is that the world is already gone, so the messages she's been receiving have been scheduled prior to her launch. So the idea is that her Father left those messages for her when the time was right. My assumption is that her father didn't want her to remember what happened, not at least until she was mature enough to handle it. Note that when she was sent away she was around 5 years old (again, my assumption). She seems to be around the age of a teen in the video itself due to her stature, not uncommonly seen in many high school-centric anime. So due to it all happening when she was a kid, she probably forgot about what happened, which is why remembering what happened had such a traumatic effect. If he scheduled the messages to be delivered too early, she would've been worse off, if it was too late, she may have resented him for it. In all these years, I've wondered what he could've possibly told her, the idea of inspiring hope in someone who is all alone in the vacuum of space, hoping that someday someone or something out there will find you, it's honestly inconceivable. It's why I think her reaction felt all the more heartbreaking. To be honest, it reminds me of Superman's story. A world on the brink of extinction, two parents who will do anything to make sure their child survives. I'll leave with this last tidbit.. Where's her mother? There's a single moment in the entire thing where you see her mother in a family portrait holding her when she was a baby. I've always had this feeling that she died early on in her daughter's life, note that her father is found in his shop, he isn't a deadbeat either, he basically a single parent, it's shown expressly that he's very involved in her life. It's a possibility that he fought as hard as he did to give her a chance at survival because of the loss of his wife. It's likely that there was nothing he could do to save his wife but there was something he could do to save his daughter. I kept questioning why she wasn't there and the portrait, why show the portrait? Notice that he builds that ship by himself, he designed it, you can see the area where the ship is at 4:35 (Official Video), it seems to be a shed of some description (also note that she does walk in on him working on the schematics for the ship, this points to the fact that this was done by him personally). Honestly, it truly is one of my favorite songs, the way the story and the music come together is rarely seen even now. It's crazy to think it was released in 2016, 6 years ago.

We underestimate our brains. We compare her digital world with our world and say " Her world seems kinda boring" . Well lets think about what we have dreamed of so far. People with character, different worlds, weird creatures , etc . We even dream about events we dont know the outcome and are in shock to think about it afterwards. So we wake up and ask how that could even be possible. In our dreams we feel every emotion. Lust, sadness, happyness, fear etc. Maybe we are already in an virtual world and this is your dream you dream just now. If you think about it that way, that can only make you stronger and there is no one ahead of you because its your world you live in. The deeper you sleep the more realistic become the dream. So how deep do you dream right now? This song and video is strong in every aspect !

The story is so sad.... I can't explain it well but basically This person (rin) who lives in a virtual place in space that is the last of her kind ( humanity) with a tablet which allows her to create her own worlds to have fun and learn things but one day when she became 17 she found a tree a Tree she didn't make after touching that tree it showed her memories of years ago when she was younger but she realised that her father made a space ship for her to live on in space until something happens The message she got in the end is her father who made a pre-made message before he died So that when she become solder she gets that message The message was her father telling her about life and she ha sto move on( more details I can't tell because I don't remember. Best to go to the original video and find a person who translated the message) And she Starts to cry but also happy because she knows that she isn't alone( even though she is) Extra details. Jupiter was crashing to the earth making people have little time left before going instinct so her father ( whose dead now) made a ship for her to live on Her father also wanted to join her but it just didn't work so he sacrificed himself so that his daughter lives Trully one of the saddest short films ever.
