Who is Robert Cabral with Kyle Schwab - Episode 120

Kyle called me one day and said, "How come you never have anyone interview you?" And then immediately said, "I want to interview you on YOUR show!" Now, there aren't many people that I would just say yes to, but I've known Kyle for a long time and respect his passion for dogs - so what could go wrong? LOL. I agreed and we set a time to meet at the park where I do a lot of my training.
This chat was very deep and the questions were well thought out and insightful. So, if you want to learn a little more about me - take a listen to this podcast! Kyle has a great demeanor for interviewing because he's really interested, and that is something I pride myself on also. This wasn't just a "ask 10 questions and move on. Kyle's questions were very thought out. and he really wanted to probe these topics. He didn't prepare me, so this is just off the cuff, which I like best! I hate prepared interviews.

Dear Robert and Kyle, I enjoy your talks and broadcasts very much. Thank you for all your work, especially shelter and rescue work. Regarding this subject. I had a life changing experience with a rescue dog I took in. It's a kind of magical story about how he came to me but basically he was a loner, street dog in Greece and ended up with me in Scotland. He was a magnificent 40kg dog, something wolf-like about him, I always thought. He was extremely confident, super-reactive with car tyres!, dominant with badly behaved dogs in an amazing way, dominating and punishing a variety of insubordinate dogs - NEVER biting but a great furious display of aggression and rolling the other on its back. After these badly behaved 'middle of the pack' dogs were taught a lesson they became far better behaved with their owners (who thanked me for my dog teaching theirs a lesson), and the crazy thing was how those dogs relaxed, knew their place and worshipped my dog, who became their natural leader. It was a fantastic dynamic to watch. I managed to cure him of tyre chasing as I was worried he would be killed under the wheels of a car. Yet this dog, having survived on the streets, with all his stature and confident, dominant personality - despite me only having him 2 or 3 months, I put him in with orphan newborn lambs as their protector, and he raised them - I trusted him implicitly. He was by my side through 10 very hard years of my life. Because he was a survivor from the streets and had the street smarts - he could sense a bad 'un unerringly and act accordingly, chasing away predatory chancers & ne'er-do-wells. (People that is,). One day he cocked his leg on the back of a total jerk! (Who proceeded to chase me and a friend, like a madman. Ex Metropolitan cop I later found out. Haha). Dogs adored him and the local farm dog would come 2 miles to visit him. Not long after I took him saw the handy man who worked where we lived approaching with a large wrench in his hand. He went to the man and apprehended him, holding his arm, until I came out. He didn't bite, just held the arm with the 'weapon'. He never, ever liked this fellow, who was a dishonest rogue, just tolerated him, no matter how this chap tried to bribe him with treats. I cannot emphasise how much I learned about dogs from this amazing animal. He was a living university of dog behaviour. I never knew what his early story was, and I will always wonder as he had such a natural wisdom and intuition. I am truly grateful to have had this incredible, fine dog sharing this life with me, fleeting as it was. He died on my floor at home, in the time of his own choosing, without the hell of the vet visit. His death came with the grace that had been his life. He was like a dog from a story, the kind of dog everyone dreams of having by their side. I took him everywhere. And the Dog Star shone on me because out of all people in the world, he came to me - what a gift. I buried him on the shore of where he loved to be, beside his heart companion and they run together. I wonder where he would fit in with your dog assessment? What type of dog he would be judged to be? Ps one day I will write a book about him.

I am a very emotional person. Suffer from bad anxiety myself! I have great respect that you shared that. We who have suffered with darkness are not weak , on the contrary we are strong because we dont let ourselves stay in that place. Its takes a strong person that can come back from the pain of depression and anxiety.We have more empathy than most! ❤❤

I wish I started at an animal shelter like you recommended rather than a doggy daycare. On one hand, I got my hands on hundreds of dogs. On the other hand, nothing feels more helpless than having to sit and watch these dogs go through the ringer, and it really does a number on your ability to empathise with the people who bring them. Dog training is A LOT about empathy for people. You can't be a dog trainer without it. I wish trainers talked about how to help people the way that you do. I agree to you Kyle about getting a dog.. They have a life and may just last 14-16 years.. if you get a dog, never give up on them.. everything has a solution.. you just have to work hard and spend time.. consistency, patience, and love for the dog is something we could do for them to have a happy life.

Robert is my mentor. I had dogs all my life, after losing by pitbull of 12 1/2 years l rescue super reactive dog 120 lb English mastiff Ridgeback mix got into educating myself on Dog and psychology took Robert online course became A dog trainer only on weekends ! I volunteer to certain organization that foster dogs .Post KZbin videos about training but mostly about management and understanding how dogs see us and we see them . Leash and teach by Harry T again I don’t do this full-time it’s a passion of mine rewarding to help shelter dogs never come back. Love you Robert you are more than a dog trainer to me.

What a great interview! We chose a 5yr old Dalmatian from Seattle Rescue; we had for yrs til passed at almost 12. Grieved for 2 years. Finally, chose a rescue from an online photo & cute interaction. Wrong choice for us. He is a bully-boxer, & we knew nothing of the breed. He knew no manners, zero training. The first year: fleece, food, dog, human, & play aggression. He knocked me down & ripped cothing & scratch/claw & bite marks with one full lock bite. He almost went back to shelter.😢 With full dedication, compassion, lots of work & tears we got through. He still has dog & people aggression, but with tools & investment we saved our fur baby. Still a work in progress.

Great podcast Robert & Kyle, always a pleasure to listen and learn...and yeah I get the darkness - focusing on the light, no matter how far away it is. If only all people did do their research first, so many dogs need homes because people take on the wrong breed or even what characteristics to look out within the breed and how they are being managed. I really miss my GSD Zeus with each passing day, he was such a great dog. I look at many GSD's but has to be the right GSD fit for my home - I instinctively felt an inner connection with Zeus. Previous owners didn't understand he was going through his 9-12 mth fear period. After training him, turned out to be one of the best I owned.

I’ve always had GSD’s, my wife has always had Corgi’s. Two months ago a friend called me to ask me to rescue a approximately 1.5 y/o Malinios that was found wandering the streets. He is wonderful! If I can just get him to drop the tennis ball, he would be perfect. That said, four herding dogs is a lot.

A business to match people to dogs is a fantastic idea! Love this. I tried hard to meet owners of the breeds I was interested in as research but it was really tricky. Would have liked to hear more about the comparison between bite sports and agility. Thank you for the interview.

I have foster bullies and have adopted 2 great dogs . Then I brought in a beautiful boy who was large and way stronger than me . Long story he loved me because I was dominant with him . But he bite the men in my family . I still worked through it and it was all men he would flat out attack . My hearts broke he was euthanized. He was failed in so many ways before me . I wish I had found both of you last month . Now my foster is a 1 yr old naughty frenchie that’s has tryed to kill 3 chickens now . All business had I not been right there he would have . I’ve binge watched all day . Was alittle disappointed I could find many videos on Kyle training his bullie breeds . I’m part of a group that is a 501 and is really doing a great job at saving lives as well as training . I really want to learn more about

Hello, gentlemen. I could use some advice from each of you. I deliver mail as a Rural carrier in a small town in Texas. In this small town on my route there's a Malinois (or GSD x) that is increasingly aggressive when I drive by (2x). The owners have put him/her on a lead attached to a tree... I do not hit the gas when driving by and I tell him it's ok quietly as I coast by. Now there's a Pit mix that's learning to chase cars as a stray. He's just hanging around getting increasingly aggressive. I have to dismount my vehicle in order to deliver packages too large to put in a mail box. I don't know the best way to proceed. Please help.

I’ve definitely found another dog trainer to learn from. I’ve trained all my service dogs since I was 15 all where pits rescued from really bad situations. I also managed doggy play groups of up to 30 dogs as my first job(insanely dangerous) because of my experience with horses, I was always in charge of the largest dog play group(that was the most fun I’ve ever had and I’ve learned I have a way with difficult dogs mostly pities, wolf hybrids, Rotties, cattle dogs, Great Danes and goldendoodles😅) I recently rescued a pit that was about to be euthanized because he killed a small dog. I called off the euthanasation an hour before it was scheduled. He’s amazing around dogs he’s grown up with ( even other small dogs) but every other dog he didn’t know as a puppy is a prey item) He has already killed a small yorkie and a dachshund that got loose in his old neighborhood. My heart is broken for the other dogs and their owners but they didn’t have them on a leash. He’s done so much better but we both have a lot to learn. I’ll definitely be checking out both of your channels(especially since y’all specialize in bullys and other working dog breeds)

It is very very important that fear is bred out of bloodlines . Sch training was developed as a test of courage . Temperament tests must be passed by a Koer Meister before protection can begin! Corrrections are necessary but never excessive as this can tip a dog into what I call “survival” drive and the dog attacks their handler and the handler can think they have a strong dog when they don’t ! They have in fact betrayed their dog into defending himself from some they should be able to trust . This ruins good dogs . I have witnessed dog handlers do this and it is not right!.

There are four different gsds in the world and at least two kinds of Labradors A working lab is one of the toughest dogs on earth and without work they will eat your boots . The Showline Labs are scared of water and have the drive bred out of them and probably hypothyroid and sleep all day. Buy from a breeder that will take their dogs back and a capable of matching your ability with the right pup. Breeders should be responsible for the dogs they produce . These breeders are out there . Find them they are out there. Don’t paint all breeders with the same negative brush .
