The Belgian Malinois is becoming every more popular and with that popularity comes problems. People are breeding malinois in their backyards and selling them quick and cheap. This will be a disaster for people and for the breed. I decided to sit down with a very knowledgeable breeder and good friend of mine Tasha Mesina, who has been breeding Malinois for may years. With countless successful litters, sport dogs as well as herding and show dogs, Tasha loves and appreciates the breed and knows her stuff.
This podcast will enlighten you to this wonderful breed, it will educate you on the basic genetics of the breed and hopefully help you make a good decision if you're looking to get a Malinois.

I watched this video while waiting to pick my son up from school (yes we have to wait that long lol). With my spoiled rotten Mal snoring in the back seat waiting for her boy. My son heard the part about they should be a part of the family and go on vacation etc and just smiled because my baby dog has been on 3 vacations with us already. She'll be 2 next month. She's my world. 🥰

I agree with her about”living with the family”! We have 3 malinois dogs. Constantly with us & definitely need to be with their pack. Don’t get a dog if you leave it outside or keep it in a “separate” area. Plus a tired malinois is great so make sure they are getting plenty of exercise!

Form to function is something that some breeders forget. This happens with horses as well and it becomes a problem with lethal genes and so on. There has to be a combination of great conformation and working ability mixed with great temperament. Wonderful conversation with a responsible, knowledgeable breeder and trainer. Dog lovers are responsible people or should be. Respect from Australia.

Interesting topic. I am intrigued with Mal history and genetics. My Mal is not a pure breed and I would not change a thing. I am not into showing, competing and breeding her. She had all kinds of behavioral issues and fear based aggression that resulting in biting at least 10 people early in her life. Had some points that I did not think i could keep her. Thx to RC online training courses she has become an awesome family pet that is super fun outdoorsy stuff. Thx again Robert for saving my dogs life

We got our beautiful black Mali boy off Craigslist lol. We def don't hate him, he's very affectionate and not super hyper, extremely smart, learns new commands in 2 days but he's a bit nervy due to being under socialized and being tied up outside before we got him. He's 8mo now and he's obedience getting better as we start to really bond. Mals are very fun, beautiful dogs. Definitely train every single day( twice 15mins) and keep him active.

Amazing interview Robert, thank you. I really enjoyed listening to Tasha and align myself very much with her breed preservationist ideals. I'm in Australia and breed, show, train and trial Rottweilers. One of my main sports is also herding. Yes, breeding should be about the whole dog, leaving out no aspect. We must try to tick every box 🤗🙌❤️

Great video. Precious content. I have a friend, a police officer that also works as one of the police dog trainer (São Paulo city, Brazil). This guy loves malis and has a Mali and a dutch shepherd. I would to have one mali, but my life style does not allows me: much time out of home, living in an apartment with a dog and three cats. May one day my life style changes so I could give all what a malinois needs. They are amazing dogs. Thanks for this amazing content Robert.

In defense of dog buyers such as myself, I do ask for the price early on in the conversation. Pretty much coming out of the gate. Because if I do not, and the price is above what I can pay, it is a waste of the breeders time (and my own) talking with me as we answer each others questions. Love this interview and the info applies to anyone looking for other breeds of dogs as well.

Very interesting. I got 2 sisters (Working Border Collies) , a year a part ( separate litters) because the first pup was all I could ever have asked for. Dutch Shepherd, owner here!!! ....Puppyhood and Teen years for these dogs, is like none other!!!... like raising Tazmanian Devils, or Hyenas...But They are the most fun too... they are cute, funny, cuddly and sweet and full of personality...but they will always be that even after the trying times... high energy level and curiosity ...mixed with puppy impatience and short attention span... makes Dutch and Malinois puppies craziness and Destruction go to a whole another level... and you don't even have to leave the room!...just get a bag of cheap dog toys with a few stuffed animals or pillows, mixed in and then try to sweep up or vacuum those toy pieces and stuffing and see if your puppy wont try to eat the Vacuum and/or vacuums, electrical wire that connects to the wall!!! Oh, Yes!! Teenage months are just as fun...mine decided he was happy being a puppy forever after I picked his scrawny 72LB butt up walked him up the driveway, Kicking and whinning, into the house, plopped him in and locked him in his crate and brought the little fluffy dog ( he tried to bully then, pick up and carry away!!!)... So, me fluffy dog and his owner, played in the living room and she was advised not to pay attention to my dog and no amount of whinning or tantrums was getting my dog out of that one! ...after, that an old Masstif put him in his place at the vet office. The masstiff was 10yrs old and wasn't going to play macho dog Games with my 1yr. Old Dutch teenage Dutchie!!! ...I was just thankful, there was a big enough dog around for him to learn the same lessons that I was trying to teach him lol. ...learning curve!!! His puppy crate looks like a Gorrilla attacked it too... Now, he is the Dutch Shepherd I wanted...So, much Fun and a role model example for when my friends bring us there puppies, he is teaching them, basic obedience and agility jumps and how to scale walls at the skate park and go down the slide at the play ground gyme! Hopefully these little puppies grow up soon...we would have an awsome dog team for agility, frisbee, dock jump and Flyball ... hopefully I can find us all a club or team to join. Love this episode. I was wondering which color and pattern variety, in Malinois, has the best Masking?

I had a Dutchie, he was the best boy in the world! Such good instincts baked into him. He somehow knew my toddler was not a playmate, was an absolute angel with her; my older kid got a few nips in the beginning. Cool with all other dogs, stand-offish -and intimidating- with people he didn’t know. RIP Jango ❤️

It’s all so interesting..you might laugh, but..I’m sad I can’t breed my backyard chickens..I have 13, all mixed, but my Cuckoos Marans get so broody..(look like black n white barred rocks) they are..dedicated..moms..! They want to have babies so bad, they sit in those boxes on other girls’ eggs no matter how many times you toss them out! They all have awesome personalities..positive only dog trainers should just get chickens, that’s all that works with them anyway. I had one girl lay zero eggs all summer, she stayed broody the whole season..I don’t use supplemental lighting in winter, I let them freeload, it’s super cold here, they deserve to conserve their strength. Learning their language has been fun..their interactions are split second, they love to sit in my lap, maybe half of them, the others tolerate me. Just got a GS puppy, he’s a real handful! Pulled so hard on the leash he’s bruised his throat, gave him fish oil capsules for inflammation and he’s recovering well.

Thank you so much for this video! I’ve always been curious about breeding and this was so insightful! I totally agree that mix breeding should only be done with purpose.. I’m lucky enough that my Labrador/Akita has a friendly lab temperament.. but I’d hate to think how her litter mates are doing if the people that took them are just ‘pet owners’ like Tasha said, and don’t do regular obedience and socialization etc. (literally all the things you teach). Thank you again for all your advice and great content!

I think "Show Line" dogs, that's a true "Working Dog" breed FIRST, should, as part of their competition in any shows, actually measure it's working ability... NOT just LOOK good, but, be able to PERFORM -- DO what it's been BRED to do, AND look good at it... Take German Shepherds for example... This breed has been so over-bred for the "Show Line" look, they've made most of these dogs physically and/or mentally unable to do what they were bred to do... Plus, trying to find a dog that's NOT going to have at least one serious genetic defect, or future medical problem like hip dysplasia, is nearly impossible... But, they'll get lots of ribbons when they're young, but won't be able to walk a few years later... I see this happening to the Belgian Malinois in the future, but not like the Dalmations, Dobermans, or other "Fad" dogs when they became instantly popular through movies... Luckily for the dog, the difficulty in trying to keep them exercised for the amount of time the breed requires, early and continued training (also required), and having a purpose or a job, they won't be as popular as a "family pet," therefore won't be attracted to so many unscrupulous breeders trying to make a quick buck.

My girl is a Belgian Malinois mix. She's cream with black tips on her shoulders and a black tip on her tail. She looks like a purebred Mal. Because she's a mix, she's incredibly calm. She's done everything I've asked her to do (she doesn't do water, so I've not done dock diving).

Robert, I had to write - as you & Tasha are the reasons why I have my 2 x Malinois. Yes, you heard that correct - 2 x Malinois....💕💕 Approximately 3 years ago you had a previous podcast with Tasha during which you were discussing the Malinois dog breed, Tasha's breeding program, the importance of ensuring you get a good dog, from a reputable breeder & how important it was that the dogs were stable & had good temperaments. During that podcast, you also mentioned that Tasha had breed your dog Goofy & that Goofy's Mom, Camy had been bred by a Belgian Malinois Breeder, here in Australia (Queensland) prior to Camy then being shipped to Tasha, in America. That was the final bit of research I needed. Following that podcast, I contacted the Australian breeder - Lynda Trotter as I had already done a lot of prior research into getting a new dog & was decided on a Belgian Malinois. Long story, short - shortly after my email to Lynda, I bought my 1st Malinois & had her flown to Perth, Western Australia - where I live. To this day, I thank my lucky stars, that I seen that podcast between yourself & Tasha - for you & Tasha & Lynda are the reasons - that I got my first Malinois girl - OMG.... she is an awesome dog, love her to bits (to the moon & back 😂), she is family, consistently with me & I her. The smartest, most intelligent, loyal dog. She is the perfect all rounder, with an awesome work ethic. Her name is Storm & she is now 2 years, 6 months old. She is trained - (of course) & kept busy, she has several jobs - some of which include training & trialing in Competition Obedience, Schutzhund/IGP, Noseworks, Tracking & Human Remains Detection - including underwater detection. She is a total bundle of active fun & one I have so enjoyed.... to the point, that one Malinois was not enough (for me). I had to have another - can't even say it is double the trouble, because it is not..... - so, I purchased my second Malinois, this year and had her flown to Perth in June 2023, she was born in April & also came from Queensland - while she is not related to my first girl, Lynda owned the Dad of this new pup. Her name is Raven & she will soon turn 7 months old, her training is along the same lines as Storm. 2 x Malinois, both girls & I could not be happier, loved the puppy stage, love watching them grow up & develope into the awesome dog, Storm is & which Raven is becoming. They are my forever dogs & I am their forever person & home, both have homes with me until death, theirs or mine. Please pass on my thanks to Tasha for the part she has played in me now owning these two beautiful girls & my thanks to you, also - from the bottom of my heart. ❤️

I haven't watched your videos since I joined a dog club! As someone who's done pet training on Sable Mals and fawn Mals it seemed like the sables were disproportionately more forward aggressive because of nerves. This could be because the color is more attractive however so more of them are in pet homes. I've seen more Mals than I would like in sedentary pet dog homes too. However as someone who owns a Sable Malinois who doesn't have those problems I think it's important that people pay attention to who their getting their dogs from. My Mal has been incredibly competent and well balanced without any problems with nerve (Ive had way more issues with being new to American schutzhund than she has! Lol). She also does dock diving on the side... and any other random things I make her do 😆 My point. Buy from a reputable breeder. Know their dogs and their dogs accomplishments. Akc papers aren't the only thing you need. I'm talking titles and working heritages. Are they embark tested? Etc. Honestly, picking a dog for a particular sport is almost harder than the sport in my opinion.

My Malinois is 14 1/2 years old. She's still pretty alert, except she acts deaf. And she has arthritis in her back legs so I have to assist her going upstairs. She's my second and such a sweet girl. But she's also anxious. A working dog failure. That's how I was able to adopt her. I love taking my dogs everywhere. We just lost our Athena to liver disease. Her DNA showed she was 20% Chow chow, 27% American pitbull, 7% lab, 4% Cane Corso, 2% Rottweiler 2% German shepherd, 5% Staffordshire Terrier, and several more. She was extremely protective, like her big sister. I prefer to adopt but the Malinois is a favorite. I keep my dogs for life. Each dog teaches me something new. My first Malinois we had to tell people not to pet her. We adopted her from a shelter in 1987??? I didn't allow her to socialize with people outside the family. She was a great dog

I now live with my second Terv. They are great, BUT - boy oh boy, the work! My first was a tough learning curve - intensity, energy, willfulness. They are not a dog you can leave at home alone all day while you're at work; be prepared for doggy day care if you work outside the home. Remember breed standard: "giving and demanding attention." And they do GIVE and DEMAND a lot of your attention 😄

Ha, I am the person with someone’s hot mess and I absolutely adore her. I adopted a “papered” 18mo GSD girl who had been in rescue for 6mos this past Dec. The rescuers have been in GSD for over 50 yrs, former K9, Shutzhund etc they said they never had a dog like this one. She’s a Panda with lots of fawn and sable. This dog knew absolutely nothing, not housebroken, didn’t know what a ball was and you couldn’t catch her either. By day three in my home she learned how fun playing ball was and before I knew about Ivan Balabanov, I taught that dog obedience just using play until she trusted me, then we went to obedience classes where we flunked the first time because she was so terrified. After that she became tops in her class. It also didn’t take long to figure out there was no way she was a full GSD, papers be damned, because she hardly shed, she wasn’t built like a GSD and she acted just like a Malinois…go, go, go obsessive. Whenever I told bite sports people I thought she was part Malinois they all said, yes, they could see that. And exactly as you stated, she was submissive and shy…sigh. But omg, she’s so intelligent that with daily handling, work and play I have a gorgeous, much more confident dog who fits in with our pack of assorted rescues and is so much fun! I would love to do beginner ring sport and think whatever we learn will be of benefit to her confidence but some day I would love to buy a confident Mal boy. I’d be ok with a color not right for the show ring but with a temperament suitable for an retired family and self confident enough for the sport ring. Can I geton your list? 😊🙏 Loved this conversation. Btw, about genetics..a person can inherit a large percentage from a distant great grandparent, I should know because I did (30%) according to 23andme.

I got a shelter dog who is a chesapeake bay retriever and pit bull i did age test and hes 5. Most days we ruck for 3 to 4 miles but around town and my packs only 17 pounds so not really rucking but kinda. Thanks to Roberts and Joel Beckmans tips Koop has majorly improved cause he originally was a high strung maniac he was in the shelter for over a year and he was on the kill list but the shelter only did positive only and thats not good. Koop is almost 80 pounds so hes got tons of muscle. Positive only might be okay for toy breeds but judging by how the majority act, its not. Thank you Robert for all you do(: balanced training is the only way to go, sure you'll get growled at and maybe even snapped at but dogs over 40 pounds you can't be messing around at all. Your dog will STILL love you and more importantly your dog WILL respect you

I would love to talk to her about my dog. Very unique and getting quite large now. Mom is a Belgium and dad is a white Shepard/white wolf mix. At a year old and 100lbs he out weighs his parents by 25lbs. His siblings aren't anywhere near his size. DNA tests, 2 of them, confirm the above breeds with small percentages of others probably from the wolf dog mix his father was.

His dog is good natured but he is very competitive. My brother played sports in school so he does a lot with his dog. His dog is an 80 pd Male who has beautiful brindle coloring. The only incident I had was fracturing my ankle while playing with him. My brother socialized him with people and other dogs. He takes him in stores which allow dogs and everyone just loves his dog. I never thought about this breed until my brother got this one. His dog thinks my brother should never be out of his sight. His wife is number 2 and I am probably 3 or maybe 4 next to his wife’s daughter. The first time I watched him I felt these paws on my shoulders while looking out the window. I turned my head and was looking into dog eyes.

Brilliant topic, we are seeing colour breeders really effecting the temperament of all dogs they breed. From the crazy popular Xxl bully, Staffordshire bull terriers, malinois, saddens me.

I have a question for Tasha about fear stage in Malinois puppies. When you select a puppy that at the time of selection presents as very outgoing even gregarious, but then goes through a fear stage, only to again return to being a normal adult, in your opinion, would you say that this dog should be excluded from breeding because of it’s nerves? When are you confident that what you are seeing is a manifestation of genetics rather than something environmental?

@barkingbirdfarms3756 2 жыл бұрын
Every puppy can go through a fear period, and multiple one’s. Talking to the breeder can give you approximate time periods that are common for their lines. I would not necessarily say that was a bad dog for breeding, it’s very common in herding breeds

No dog should have to be kept in a kennel or in a crate, EVER, especially not a Belgian Malinois. If a Belgian Malinois has to be crated, for fear of what he'll destroy, or because it doesn't know how to behave in other's homes, or even excessively barks, it's because of poor training, or lack of training. Belgian Malinois are far too intelligent to not be able to train to be free roam inside a home at all times. It's despicable seeing postings about people having to crate them, with pics attached of damage they've done, almost if they're complaining, yet seemingly proud of it. It's as if they're clueless that it only shows poor parenting on THEIR part.

Tasha you should read the new standard, they basically removed the parts that were a nod to work/performance/structure over "looks". They removed the entire Faults section "Faults: The degree to which a dog is penalized should depend upon the extent to which the dog deviates from the standard and the extent to which the particular fault would actually affect the working ability of the dog." IE a dog with excess white, a less than perfect ear set, etc. but excellent structure should have placed better than a dog with a perfect head piece/ears and color, but a poor front. I'm still an ABMC member, but with the changes they have made in the last year, I'm seriously considering no longer renewing my membership.

I am hoping to get Embark done on my Mali mix. I am more interested in finding relatives "if" they too registered. If nothing else, it will help me to better understand his personality traits depending on what other breeds are tied in. I am simply curious.

Very good video. Don't agree with everything you said since all dogs are different. I bred my female German shepherd with a male malinois. They turned out to be the best all-around family dog. Easy to trained and very social around other dogs people. You must be dedicated though.🐕

We can't get around that color matters to owners. I prefer black and tan GSD. HOWEVER, if I were a breeder, I am going to select my breeding partners on temperament, first, not color.

I think that there is the attempt of keeping the 2 belgian breeds separate ( Malinois and Groenendael)..colour wise. This is why they discourage the black breeding in malinois..just my opinion :)

I adopted a rescue when he was estimated to be about 2 years old. I had never heard of Black Belgian Malinois until my wife accidentally found the breed online. People would ask me what kind of dog he was and I would just say handsome. To make a long story short, is there a company that could do DNA testing to see if he is full breed and what he might be mixed with? I looked and could not find one. He is a bit small for a male, but he really looks like a full breed. Thank you for this video.

@@RobertCabralDogs thanks so much. I did look at this site but I was looking in the wrong place in the wrong way to find this breed. I have seen video's that imply this breed should never be used as a pet, but we actually picked him at the shelter because he got along with my older border collie. While she would not accept other dogs we selected, she accepted him. While he has had his issues--probably because I did not train him correctly, he has made a great pet and great companion for my border collie. So smart, loving, and protective. I grew up with rescue dogs and have continued that pattern all my life--I am 60 now. In your opinion do you think it is a mistake to adopt rescues from this breed? I learned from this video, that sometimes dogs are returned because they don't measure up to the breed standards. I was just wondering if I should consider getting another one, possibly from a breeder who has a dog returned? I am retired now and volunteer at the same shelter I got my last two dogs from. I would love to have a phone conversation with someone like you, even if it was for 10 minutes about this topic and would be happy to pay for the time. Either way, I appreciate your response so I can get him tested.

I'm by no means an expert but it seems to me that whenever breeders start breeding for cosmetic traits such as colour, sloping back, face shape etc. over fitness to do the job the dogs were originally bred for you get problems. Whenever I hear the term "show line" I think of it as a less healthy facsimile of the real breed.

It goes much furrher than this. If you breed for a dog character, the appearance changes. If you are interrested, just ask me. The black variation is a genetic breach, if further cultivated would get you a Groenendaal included character and health problems. See the russian experiment still ongoing 70y.

UK breeding standard is (basically) that a BSD is a BSD is a BSD. In other words, if you had a 'naked' BSD you wouldn't be able to tell what variety it is. My grey Terv was from a Groen litter of 8. There were 6 Groens who got registered as such and 2 Tervs (my grey and a fawn/black.) My Mali is *** from a Terv cross. Having said that and having had 3 very similar in character Tervs...the Mali is a different kettle of fish altogether!
