To me, Carcass represents Simon's wheelchair and how it bounds him. The chains that suspend Carc in the air represent how trapped he is in the wheelchair with seemingly no way to get out. He thinks part of the reason that Sophie doesn't love him is because of how he's bound in the wheelchair, which sortof ties back to the end of the game when Simon says he knows that he's burdening Sophie. The thing that I don't think makes sense in this theory is how he already confessed his feelings for her, but that's still what I see Carcass as representing.
@ThePathStrider5 жыл бұрын
It makes sense because this scene lets you decide who is to blame for her rejection of Simon. If you fight Carcass, it means that Book Simon blames Simon, or at least his wheelchair, for what happened. He even accuses the monster of being responsible for what happened to Sophie. Otherwise, Book Simon blames Sophie, which ultimately leads to Simon killing her. I believe that Carcass is how Simon sees himself - a barely-living pathetic lump of flesh, trapped in a mobile metal cage, just a burden to everyone else. Carcass is a manifestation of Simon's self-loathing.
@jonnyb.animationstutorials7119 Жыл бұрын
6 years later, but I agree. To me, Carcass represents Simon's fear of forever being stuck in a wheelchair, unable to live his life, much like a carcass. That's why beating Carcass is the first step to the good ending. Book Simon killing Carcass is real Simon overcoming those feelings. He already confessed to Sophie before the accident and she rejected him, but perhaps he blames being stuck in a wheelchair for why she continues to reject him. EDIT: Fixed some things.

Something that I would like to handle more in depth is Simon's family relationship. I mean, when we started the game we got a message from Simon's mother asking where he is and what she is worried about. And Simon's journey ends when you arrive at what appeared to be his home before isolating himself in his apartment. Simon is concerned about seeing his mother, hoping that she is well, this means that at least he had a mother who cared about him and that evidently she was not going to leave him when he became paraplegic; It was good to know more about this context. And it could have been something as simple as the Cellular messages, that is to say, he continued receiving messages from his mother to the point that he lost his cell phone.
@chibitori4 жыл бұрын
I agree. I wish they gave some kind of explanation as to why he was inquiring about where his mother was. I think the first text from mom is part of his story, like where he took a walk in the middle of the night to get the dark thoughts out of his head and then got hit by a car, so his mom was probably concerned about why he was out so late/where he was, and maybe a mother's intuition that something bad might have happened to him (him getting hit by the car). But when he's looking for his mom at the end, I'm not sure. Maybe like in his state of psychosis, he reverted to a childlike state where he just wanted his mom.

All of this was amazingly executed, but from 35:02... Tears rolled down, man. Brilliantly handled... And ended. You could have ended with the sorrowful endings, but you didn't. You ended it, not optimistic (Well yeah sorta) but mostly realistic corresponding with the ending. Simon, instead of ignoring his issues -- Chose to face them head on, and that forged him into something stronger -- So strong that he defeated his evil self that caused him grief, and prevented him from suicide. What I mean, he didn't go through so many hardships without learning, they weren't for nothing. Sure, not dealing with the worst issues you have in your life might hurt less than facing them head on, but they would remain inside of you, unchecked. For what? Extra uncertainty in your mind? Something more to be worried about? That will just hurt you on the long term FAR MORE than it would on the short one. Your video made me sympathize with Simon, and realize what a genius game Cry of Fear truly is.

SCP - 4126 Object Class: Euclid Special Containment Procedures: SCP-4126 is to be kept in a padded cell with both arms bound to prevent further writings. Description: SCP - 4126 is a young, paraplegic man in his early 20s who suffers from severe depression and anxiety. Throughout most of his teenage life, SCP-4126 has suffered from severe depression and was prone to nervous breakdowns well before a tragic car accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. While adjusting to his new life, SCP-4126's psychologist; Dr. Purnell, advised him to write a book about his thoughts and experiences while dealing with depression, this book is hereby referred to as SCP-4126-1. As SCP-4126 wrote SCP-4126-1, a pocket dimension similar to SCP-106 was created, where everything written onto the book was manifested through hideous monsters and nightmarish settings. The boat ride and the pleasant atmosphere reminds me of one of the last warning signs of suicide: a sudden boost in mood and seemingly improving. This is because their plan has them feeling freer, lighter, more energized. The side effects of antidepressants that result in suicide are kind of reverse engineering that, where the sudden boost in energy can happen before mood/outlook do and give them the boost they would need to attempt.

Interesting, very interesting indeed, but I think you missed the mark by a whole lot, you see, hello kitty simon is the actual, true main character, and you have to work towards unlocking him because, surprise surprise, the ending where he is happy is because of how watching hello kitty made him find peace in his life, which obviously led to him watching anime and ultimately trying to recreate a scene, therefore killing the police officers... I was gonna write that as a joke, but it unfortunately makes sense in a twisted and bizarre way, anyway, thank you so much for this video, it was a saving point on a month where the content on youtube seems to be pure garbage, very well worded, researched and edited, and about the 6k words, I know your pain.

Cry Of Fear, in my opinion, the greatest horror game to ever exist. It doesn't need good graphics, or fantastic gameplay. It just needs a good story, and they absolutely succeeded in humanizing Simon. To some extent its actually terrifying just how realistic this game is. Loneliness, depression, anxiety, suicide, mental illness, psychosis, despair. These are all things that no game developer would ever consider to base their game around, but here we are with Cry Of Fear, relating to lots of people that also deal with this stuff. It's fascinating, really is. Simon isnt just a video game character, he is us... All of us....

The only reason I can think of mace being in the story, is that it's a representation of Simon trying to deal with his disabilities. The amount of bandages he's covered in, and the giant mace slowing him down must do nothing but hinder him. Plus you also walk on a step above the water to kill him and avoid damage. It's a random thought, but it's my only guess

Excellent analysis - greatly helped highlight some very reasonable interpretations of some of the events that occur in the game. And your playthrough was great, too. Very well done! -- Personally, when I think of video games as an art form, or I think about people questioning video games' value, games like Cry of Fear are what spring to mind. These types of games that describe some aspects of the human experience - dark ones, mind - not only increase awareness of these issues, but also to help illustrate what burdens they are. Of course, a game need not pursue dark subject matter to be considered art, but I believe stuff like this sincerely helps in illuminating very real issues - something which is beautiful, even if the game itself is horrifying. I'm pretty certain Cry of Fear has helped shape how I view depression, in at least a few ways. To any mature enough, I'd recommend at least watching a playthrough of this, if you've yet to. Not all people learn the same way, and a creative experience such as this (rather than a written story or a purely visual tale - good though those may be!) may be quite helpful. Plus, well, it is entertaining to watch Let's Players get spooked. :)

Well explained, I didn’t quite understand the story at first but I got the ending where I fight book Simon, carcass however when I saw that Sophie was dead in the book one I was sad that it happened but was furiously angry when I found out that the carcass was part of it, I killed the carcass due to how much anger I had for it and with the doctor, I didn’t quite trust him but I helped him get a gun although it just resulted in him shooting me in the arm just like if you would not trust him but now I finally understand the story of all the nightmares that haunted Simon knowing the car crash and before it.

I keep on rewatching this video and replaying this game. It always makes me want to choose the hard path for Simon, knowing it will lead him to a better end. A better end for him and a better end for the game. Then I remind myself how I always ran from the hard path, I closed myself away from the hard choices. After I played this game it made me realize that I need to fight like Simon did. That if I want to keep living, I'll have to shoot those creatures in my own head. The battle is always hard but if you put everything you have on the line - be sure that you will win.
@en41355 жыл бұрын
I always assumed that the 4th ending was "Canon" and that the happy ending for book Simon is the Police campaign. From his perspective it would allow the Police he tragically murdered to succeed in what they may have set out to do, helping him.
