This is a great example of the fact that where a song came from is less important than how it was used by someone to move people, which is what the all songs are about in the first place. You can guarantee not one person in that crowd was sitting there quietly contemplating the origins of that song 😉

And now you find out that the bass player is one of the sweetest women you will find. According to my son that is. Ha!Ha! here's the back story. At 16yo he was studying to become an audio engineer. The college always helps set up all the stages at the Rockhampton music festival. He helped set up Spiderbait's gear at the start of their set. During the set, one of the legs of the floor tom gave way, & Sam dived on stage to hold it up during the song while another student slid him a couple of sandbags to prop up the tom for the rest of the set. During the show, Kram broke a stick. At the end Kram thanked him and gave him the broken stick & the set list that was taped to the kit. Janet also came over & thanked him for his effort. Then planted a big wet kiss on him. Quite an experience for a young kid. He's been a fan ever since.

You gotta watch the video clip for this song. Absolutely awesome, Kram the drummer races against a black( in Australia is a Crysler PT cruiser) car in the street. It's fun and they change leads back and forth in it.

If there’s anything Australian rock bands do brilliantly, and that’s covers, Spiderbait did Black Betty superbly. The Angels did a great cover of the Animals classic “we’ve got to get out of this place”, and Rose Tattoo did a great cover of Steppenwolfs, Born to Be Wild.

It’s originally by Trad. There’s an old version by Leadbelly, and it was covered by Ram Jam in the 70s.

I seen a documentary on a PBS when I was a youngster. This was actually call and reply song that Black Chain Gang members would sing. There was actually a recording of it. You could probably find with some Google search such. I remember Ram Jam doing it so I found 30's prison group a blast. This was incredible, music is just cool.

I love this live, but its much much clearer, sharp and crisp on the Studio Release, and if you are watching the Video Clip then the Original is best, dont bother with the Official video. It is anything but and has been messed with and dubbed over with some movie clips that it was used in.

You need to watch (and react) to RAM JAM. Then do the Spiderbait video of Black Betty (awesome vid) and then compare - this vis is brilliannt but until you compare the original to the pretender, we cant decide
