Thanks for coming on the show Steve! Enjoy reading your articles with the news and observer - heck, I used your article on Ryan Young as a reference to how our Freshmen were underprepared for the collegiate level last year preseason. I also enjoy you and Sheldon on the BLEAV podcast even though you guys don’t have frequent episodes haha. As for predicting the line up I absolutely agree with your analysis and obviously a lot of of this is coming from the horse’s mouth (Jon Scheyer). But in terms of 3 guard line ups, they can certainly put a lot of pressure on the opposing team’s defense, but it also puts a lot of pressure on our defense. Primarily, Kyle Filipowski. This may not be evident against Southern Indiana, but Michigan State may expose this 3 guard strategy. Or maybe a better example would be UNC or NC State later in the season when teams know who they are and what they want to do as we play Michigan State somewhat early. And I will add, that against better competition opposing coaches are going to want to attack the rim to put Kyle in risky situations. I know I would!!! If they can put Kyle on the bench, Duke may have no choice but to play small ball and who do you think that benefits???? We have to see how all things play out it’s still so early. I’m eager to see who may take on bigger roles (praying for Christian Reeves). I just want to caution people when they watch Duke steam roll some of these non-conference opponents and think the 3 guard lineup makes us the best team in the country that they may come back down to earth without a parachute after a loss in a tough matchup. I’m optimistic about this team but I still think fans should try to see a bigger picture and not just part of the picture. With that being said, I don’t expect a 3 guard lineup the entire game, rather a mixture until Jon figures out what seems to work best (*cough Power cough*). And back to what Steve said, we pretty much know 4 of the guys who will be starting the season. And those 4 guys don’t even offer us our best 3 guard combination in terms of offensive and defensive efficiency (having the best shooters, playmakers, and defenders) that Jon can put on the floor which to me is another disadvantage. It’s still going to work and a viable option but I don’t think it’s our best. Later we can delve deeper into the dynamics of what wins basketball games and why I favor more size at the 3. I also think Foster may be the best option at the 2 but he will certainly have to earn it.

The starters on Day 1 may drastically differ from who they are in March. It's a long season and these guys have to earn it. With that been said, I agree that the four returning starters will all take the floor first in November. I see actually 5 potential players to take that last spot -- McCain, Young, Stewart, Foster, or Power. I don't mind giving up some things on defense if we're potent on offense. So I don't worry about the 3 guard offense if we're winning 95-80.

Proctor Mccain Mitchell Stewart Filipowski would be my ideal lineup. I’d love to see the emergence of Schutt/Power as our knockdown shooter(s)

I'm not worried about a 3 guard lineup. First the offensive effeciency will be off the charts. Second their bigs are voracious rebounders. Third they will have size at the wings. You have to know that rebounding will be point of emphasis. Coach made it clear after the Va game that, he's about winning. I know Coach will figure out the winning formula. The Chip is coming back to Durham baby.

there's not going to be enough minutes for the freshmen even though they're clearly more talented than the returning players. I'm shocked that Foster and/or McCain aren't transferring since their draft stock will take a major hit

Depends on if they play smaller and faster with 3 guards with Mitchell & Flip at 4 & 5. Or go big with Flip at the 4 and Mitchell at the 3.
