Anime has no sense of scale at all. Take a look at the Baki Hanma series on Netflix. Every main character in the thing looks to be at least 7 feet tall, and some of the genuinely huge look 9 or 10. One big sumo guy was described as so big he took up three hospital beds. Baki's father, the "Strongest Creature in the World" is listed at 6'2", 265lbs, but if you see the way he's drawn, he's likely closer to 7'4" and easily 400 lbs of rippling muscle when he's relaxed. Regular people aren't even up his nipples, the guy is Shaq sized at least. And he's nowhere near the biggest guy in the anime. Hell, Cloud from Final Fantasy weilds a sword that looks like a midsized sedan on a stick and no one bats an eye. Guts weilds a huge sword that's only half that size and he's easily twice the man Cloud man in terms of build.

Here is a fantastic example of a character that was underdeveloped and very one-dimensional. After a good writer or many writers I don't know Barry...... Got a hold of this character developed into a natural progression! What was once a stereotype then became a good character all on it's own!! he became my favorite SF character and i used him pretty much permanently. Managed to even rank up to the 100s in rank in north america with him at the peak of USF4 during the great ps3 days. Honestly i dont play SF5 because im not interested in the roster and the only one i like is Alex since they brought him back but if they were to add Gouks again id most likely play it none stop again. There was something about this character i loved the fact you could time shit to counter or time your tautsus to anti air that just made him feel so satisfying.

Actually it has been implied since like ever that akuma/gouki is ryus father and gouken his uncle who raised the boy and trained both Ryu and ken, this also comes from an animated movie street fighter alpha generations(2005)which the fan film was based on, it also implied that Sayaka from this movie is Ryus mother and that there was a sort of triangle love between gouken, sayaka and Gouki/akuma who she was with.

He never went by the name "Shen Long". That was a translation error for Ryu's Shoryuken.

It's true that the name came from a mistranslation of Ryu's cinematic scene phrase. This was the main inspiration for the Gouken character... Thus some regions also referred to him as this "made up" name. 🤓👍

Gouken is not Shen Long. It was an April fools joke turned true after Capcom rendered SF4 non canon. Gouken was the master of Ken and Ryu who was killed by Gouki aka Akuma with his raging demon, who later on also destroyed M. Bison. But Capcom decided to retcon their thin story line and have them in the new games.

The shen long joke is from 1992 so it has nothing to do with sf4(2008) other than Gouken's sf4 design looking a lot like the gaming magazine mockup art, also gouken already existed in the american animated series(1995-1997) had the beads,black hair and beard, a bandana and red gi , Sf4 is canon and takes place after 2 so I dont know where are you getting that it wasn't. The whole point was that people wanted to know who was Ryu and ken's master and because of the whole shen long line mistake from the game and fan theories capcom decided to create(retconed him officialy in the games as the character already existed) the character for real based on those rumors and gags.
