What a great performance and also such a great idea that you have reached out to those players. What is really interesting, is the winrate of these players. It seems abnormally high, especially, since these are KNOWN players and one would expect them to be more pressured by opponents. There are some more observations: These players are predominanty US based. Would this mean that player skill dispairity is higher in US? Having this high win rate seems highly improbably. Lots of these tournaments are also online and in light of recent events, I am taking those results with a grain of salt. Still, I recognize a lot of these names and I do perceive them as strong players. Amazing results and I hope to play some of them in person (although highly unlikely, given that I play in EU).
@sPontus Жыл бұрын
The biggest reason for the list being large us people is that the tournament scene is way more developed there. They have more events, online events don't end 4 in the morning for them etc. This affects them in a couple of ways. They have more events so making the 10 event threshold is way easier. Having more events also means that being good is more worthwhile since you have the events to go out and try to earn money basically encouraging grinders to go harder. I don't really think the skill gap is larger there but the scene is way more developed
@cedhtv Жыл бұрын
What pontus said is the big reason why I don't play in many or any cEDH online tournaments. I don't like staying up that late.
@igiwarcraft Жыл бұрын
I agree with both of you. The other reason I don't like online events is also the ways people cheat in them. And when the stakes are high, the incentive gets proportionally higher as well. It's a deep rabbit hole in terms of conversation, but I don't think online tournaments are to be evaluated same as in-person tournaments (and I could make a lot of arguments for that). Either way - I do agree that the disparity in skill is probably similar as in EU. I just made an assumption based on my experience. I would really love to see some of these players play in EU pools and see if it affects them at all. For me, just going to compete at Pirate Chest II was a surprising experience - the meta somewhat different from what I expected. But still - it feels surprising to me that people can perform so consistently (multiple back-to-back wins), especially as outlined above - I'd reckon they'd get at least prioritized in threat assesment. But who knows. I don't have many international in-person events under my belt, but for main event at PC2, I didn't do well (granted, lots of unlucky coincidences), but I won the side event (at 57? people - for some reason, the bracket is not available anywhere). Still - I think performing like this, consistently, would be very unlikely.

I played two tournaments and won two with Yoshimaru and Keleth. But I would attribute the wins to surprise. The fact that the deck is not widely known allowed me to pass under the radar. I think that at least ten is a good number but it depends on the players you play against. Knowledgeable players will know "all deck strategies" but others might not. This factor reduces if you meet again and again the same players. You might get away with it a few times but after a while people will be aware of what a deck can do if unchecked.

Hi Mons I very much enjoy your videos and the way you present the data though this time I don’t think you measured this properly, you usually include p values to determine if the results are statistically significant, and the lack of doing this here has lead to some inclusions that at least should’ve been mentioned that they weren’t significant. At least the first guy (not trying to take away from his performance) his results aren’t statistically significant with a p value of about 0.9 way above the usual 0.05
@cedhtv Жыл бұрын
You are correct. But the only player with a significant p-value was 3 players ... And we are more or less just making a rankings of players an how they have preformed. Yes we are kinda asking the question who is the best player in the world kinda. But the ranking order is still correct becous when you play a game the winner is the winner out of outcome. Even if the data dosen't suggest that this player is going to be the best player in the future again it is the player with the best winrate now.

Which parameters are you using to filter the tournaments? I'm curious to figure out where I would fall in this list. It doesn't help that some of my results are listed under "Dan Brooks" and some under "Daniel Brooks" I guess.
@cedhtv Жыл бұрын
Oh that will hurt. You will have 2 different players more or less. all touranemnts with 30+ players in them more or less. But not all commanders jet. There are a few commanders with only 3 games so to say.

I just went through my EDHTop16 results and found that I have 11 tournaments under "Dan Brooks" with a record of 16-29-12 and 4 tournaments under "Daniel Brooks" with a record of 7-13-1, for a total of 23-42-13. So I guess I would make the list but I'd be closer to the bottom.

This is cool and all but it's not like Worlds where there's an actual ladder and way to track who's the actual best. I'm sure these players have people in their playgroups that they would say are better than some of the list but they might not like playing tournaments. oh btw this applies to the elongated list not the top top mb.
@cedhtv Жыл бұрын
I will agree to somewhat of this. We can't say with like a 100% certainty. But I it showcasing a lot of who the really proven good players are. Like anyone can say I am winning at my LGS a lot. But these players have recorded wins vs a lot of global players and a lot of games in the track records. So I do think it is saying something. But over time a lot can change.
