I'm sorry i gotta mention that i have read the book and i did watch Jeremy's version after i watched the RDJ version, Benedict is actually my 3rd version of Sherlock that i watched but he still stole it. Even when he played in modern time, he still can manage to be 'that' Sherlock we expected and turned out very awesome. So yeah, for me Benedict's is the best Sherlock.

Yes because it's impossible to find the Granada Holmes. Once he died they just burned every conceivable copy of the series. They will never be able to find them on any streaming service, or through less legal methods. It truly is a shame they scrubbed them from existence like that. This fuckin guy.

Jeremy Brett gives the performance time and again that best reflects the character of Sherlock Holmes that we get in the books by Conan Doyle. His recreation of the book's Holmes is nearly flawless. I loved it.

Brett's Sherlock is undoubtedly best portrayal of Sherlock as depicted by Sir ACD. In the second place for faithful representation the contenders are Peter Cushing, Ronald Howard, Geoffrey Whitehead and 3rd place may be Robert Downey Jr or Benedict C.

My favorite sherlock was definitely the lenfilm old soviet version. My parents grew up in a former soviet nation and watched it as a child so they get a lot of nostalgia. The lenfilm version was so good at the actor of sherlock in the show vasily livanov got awarded a medal by the UK (order of the British Empire I believe, not sure tho).

Yeah exactly, although i like benedict cumberbatch's performance for some reason his portrayal or version is a lot more exaggerated. He sees things so small with the naked eye, he never fully solves cases with watson nor does he take the time. Jeremy bretts version is a lot more grounded, he takes his time does actual investigation and lets the case unfold on its own he sees things that others ignore, while benedicts sherlock sees things that no one can. It is almost like jeremy bretts sherlock lets the case come to him, while benedicts sherlock chases after the case.

Benedicts is really the best modern version of our beloved detective but he can't reach Jeremy Brett's performance. Jeremy Brett just combines all the different aspects of this character in one and brings his character to earth while being extremly lovable and understandable, which i can't say about Benedict Cumberbatchs performance. Cumberbatch was a little over the top with his arrogance in my eyes. I know that in the original work, it wasn't a lot different but Holmes character was a lot more approcable because of watson, which is really missing by cumberbatches version. Sherlock Holmes made me laugh in his first performance in the books, which confused me because i only knew the Cumberbatch and Downey Jr. version. Holmes and smiling and funny? Nope. Nothing even near. Cumberbatch tried but Jeremy Brett brought the humour with the chemistry with Dr.Watson on screen (which is half of Jeremy Bretts behalf and the other David Burke). So yes, Jeremy Brett totally deserves the price for the best Sherlock Holmes Version. Thank you for coming to my Ted-Talk.

RDJ portrayed his drug addict and fighter side perfectly while also not not ignoring his genius. The looks are a bit off, but his accent and behaviour are on point. You need to remember that Holmes isn't a good guy. He's a bit of a dick and RDJ portrayed that perfectly. He is my favourite portrayal of the world's greatest detective because he portrayed the lesser known aspect of Holmes.

Much of what I loved about RDJ's version might be owed to Guy Ritchie... Hard to know who did what. But in those films they showed something I RARELY see in film.... Accurate portrayal of extreme intelligence. The first film, dinner with Watson and fiance... The moment before they arrive... He sees EVERYTHING but doesn't want to, trying to turn it off but can't. Films rarely show the burden and isolation that comes with extreme intellect. Most portray intelligent people as somehow deficient, by taking away from them... Making them socially awkward or clueless... A bad cliche of nerds. These films showed what Sherlock's mind was doing, and the burden that comes with it... His social awkwardness was in seeing too much. Knowing too much... Not being able to turn it off.

My ten best would be: 1) Vasily Livanov, 2) Jeremy Brett, 3) Basil Rathbone, 4) Benedict Cumberbatch, 5) Yûko Takeuchi 6) Peter Cushing 7) Douglas Wilmer 8) John Barrymore 9) Robert Downey Jr. 10) William Gillette. The first four could easily swap positions depending on the criteria we are debating - 'best' 'favorite' 'important' 'entertaining' 'accurate' all making a difference in choice perhaps. And yes I enjoyed Henry Cavill's subtle co-starring performance in Enola Holmes, but that film was about Enola, let me see him starring in a Sherlock Holmes mystery first. My gut tells me he would to quite well. I also suggest you guys watch "Miss Sherlock Holmes" (2018) series from Japan if you don't know who Yûko Takeuchi is. She was tremendous in the part, but tragically passed away from an apparent suicide only a few days ago.

Most people who had watched Jeremy Brett's portrayal of the character thinks he's the best, and I do too. His iteration just really feels "Holmes", y'know. Whereas Benedict has stepped into the realm of mere guesswork and super sense, Jeremy Brett is grounded in reality, which what Jeremy Brett's portrayal is. RDJ was a great Holmes, but pales in comparison to Brett.

Jeremy Brett, hands down. No explanation needed. I also like Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes. Solid modern interpretation, but very faithful to the character. Two actors who often are forgotten, because they played the character only once are Richard Roxburgh and Rupert Everett. Roxburgh's interpretation was very classy, but just like Henry Cavill he's just too handsome to be believable in the role. Everett's portrayal however was excellent. I would have loved to see a whole series with him. I also love the Guy Ritchie movies, not because of Robert Downey's portrayal of the character - which was good, but not outstanding -, but because the movies are so much fun and the chemistry between Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law just works.

Okay no doubt Jeremy Brett is the greatest Holmes, but how do you leave Basil Rathbone's portrayal off of the list, he would easily be in the top three.

I agree Rathbone should be on the list. Still the movies themselves, while enjoyable, should be condemned due to the portrayal of Watson by Nigel Bruce as nothing more than a bumbling idiot. Also I agree NO BODY even comes close to Brett as Holmes.

In Sherlock Holmes I prefer accuracy to the books. I watched every single portrayal and just have to admit that Brett and Rathbone are the best in that regard. The others are doing a fine job (especially Cumberbatch) but it's not the accuracy I prefer. Sure, Cumberbatch shows a mordern Holmes but one can be mordern AND accurate.
