"If you have the budget to shoot IMAX you can rent the Arri 65"... well now you can do so on a lower budget. What's not to understand? Is that such a complicated idea? I'm baffled this is even a question. It follows the same idea EVERY other Blackmagic camera has followed ever since: make filmmaking more affordable without sacrificing too much quality. In this case, offer the option to shoot the 65mm look either waaaay cheaper through rental - or even open it up to owner-operators, since any other options are horrendously expensive and rental-only. Correct me if i'm wrong, but this will be the first 65mm digital cine camera you can actually BUY.
@rpace8 ай бұрын
Very good points👍 If you can buy a Cine 17k for the price of just a few day's rental on an Alexa 65. Then the appeal of this camera makes sense.

Correct. I don’t understand the point of the video either. If you want the “IMAX-look” on a medium budget… that’s what the camera for. Easy.

You're correct, the only camera with a 65mm sensor is the Alexa 65, and the Ursa Cine 17k 65 sensor is the first one you can actually buy, it puts digital IMAX in the hands of indie filmmakers. Which is insane to me.

I just bought a red 2 months ago cause I had a deal lined up for a full frame camera, but that fell through and I bought a komodo x. I should've waited lol. Maybe I rent out my red as an owner operator to pay for one of the ursa cines and glass for it.

I shoot TV commercials and 8k on a Raptor has become a 'standard' for many. Fast shoots, lower budgets, high expectations etc. FX guys want 'more'. If I offer up 17k they'll say yes. But the beauty of the RGB sensor is I can lower that res to say 9k (or less) for 90% of any shoot while getting a MF look, then go to full 17K for any major FX plates. Client can take a crap load of socials, banners, stills etc from that one plate! Makes sense on paper. Main limiting factor will be the cost of lens hire for someone like me. But I will 100% be looking at using this camera!!!

I think where the main market for this camera will be is rentals for lower budget projects that traditionally would be renting something like an Alexa mini or certain RED cameras. Would also be an excellent camera for universities to get their hands on to give students access to a much larger format than would normally be available.

I dream of making films, I would like to have my own camera and the editing and storage equipment that it requires. For an independent filmmaker who can afford it (I know a couple) it doesn't sound crazy to invest in a camera with those characteristics. It's just that you need the glasses, the computer, the monitors, the storage. It is as serious an investment as a house. But it's an investment I would make if I could afford it. Record a documentary at your own pace, a movie at your own pace... rent it for commercial work. Sounds good.

Blackmagic is going to take over the industry at an affordable price some day. Arri, Panavision, and all those other overpriced giants will soon lose there overrated spot as the *go to* camera. I think they're looking at the exhibition industry and seeing a spot they can force their way into. Movies that release in IMAX tend to do better than movies that don't these days. They seem more like events, something actually worth leaving your house to see. But, like you said, the Alexa 65 and traditional IMAX film cameras increase budgets exponentially, so mid-budget movies (ex: the original John Wick and Atomic Blonde for instance) could never afford them. But with the BM17K, they can now enter into the IMAX exhibition space and make some extra money at the box office. I don't know if this will actually happen, but I think that might be BlackMagic's thought process.

Very muchly can see this in studio enviornments with it's crazy nice 10g immediate transfer to cloud storage functionalities. you cannot look at a piece of tech like this and not really focus on "ok, what are all these gimmicks going to be used for, who was asking for this" coz someone HAS TO be asking for it if dozens of R&D staff are gonna work on that feature and this thing has got gimmicks galore haha.
