I do agree with Sikes being one of the darkest villains but Frollo for me takes the cake. I think both could be in the same spot simply because they share so much realistic ideals and mannerisms. Sure, Frollo is theatrical at times but mainly to match the rest of the theatrical themes and because the movie takes place in the olden days where people were very superstitious. Take the very little Disney finesse he has and Frollo is truly frightening just like Sikes if not more.
@oddish43522 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Sikes is dark, but Frollo is bigoted, hypocritical, and pretty much psychotic to boot. The Coachman from Pinocchio also beats him, due to the sheer magnitude of his evil.

@@oddish4352Frollo maybe dark, but there is one villain, one that I discovered myself who is sickeningly dark Chort Dalmatian from 101 Dalmatian Street. She doesn’t make an appearance. However, the way she treated Delilah has already impacted her deeply now Delilah isn’t evil she’s just strict however, like her mother, she is unfair, at least once or twice however, when it comes to her mother, she’s a psychopath her job and hobby is forced abortion her death count is 126K because she worked from 24 to 68, which is 6.3 human years times that by 20K = 126K she even did it to Delilah, after she meted with a husky, Hansel’s father yes, it is an unexpected connection but in 101 Dalmatian Street, always expect the unexpected up to a point.

Thank you SO much for giving Sykes some much needed attention! I completely agree that he's dark compared to a lot of the villains! The fact that he's so realistic, and can be someone you could easily run into, really makes him all the more threatening. As I grew older it's the coachman in Pinocchio for me. He’s just straight up, a loan shark who’s promising a poor man he’ll murder him if he doesn’t get his money. Simple and all you need to know. That’s probably why he gets so little screen time. What more is there to say that hasn’t already been said? There’s strength in that simplicity. I always felt like this villain was underrated but I couldn’t put my finger on why.

Great video! Your pretty much the first and only person who's done an in-depth video on disney Sykes. While villains like Frollo, Shan Yu, Lady Trama, Scar and Mother Gothel are strong contenders in being the darkest and realist disney villians, Sykes still takes the cake. Because unlike the formers, you or the heroes of the story still have chance to defeat said villian. Someone like Sykes is much harder because not only does he have power over you, but he has powerful allies as well, especailly if its tied with the mob. If there's one thing known about the mafia DEATH will always be part of the equation. And Fagin, Jenny, Oliver & company only defeated him by luck and circumstances. Plus to add on the serious factor of Sykes, he and Shan yu(as far as I know), are the only disney villians that don't appear in the house of mouse( Mother Gothel doesn't count because she didn't exsit yet)..

One villain I don’t think gets enough credit is Mother Gothel from Tangled. Sure, she might not look the most menacing or have any supernatural powers, but what makes her so creepy is just how realistic she is; especially to anyone who’s grown up with an emotionally abusive parent. Unlike Frollo or Lady Tremaine, who are both outright strict and nasty to their respective protagonists, Gothel uses all types of various mind games, gaslighting, and passive aggressive manipulation in order to lure Rapunzel into a false sense of security and make her believe that she needs her “mother” to survive. And her tactics start to become even more extreme and desperate when her only source for eternal youth is taken away from her, like an abusive parent trying to hunt down their runaway child to prevent the authorizes from learning about their actions or losing potential welfare.

5:55 to 6:03 I might have a little bit of an argument about that scene well two actually number one we all get angry at our dog’s sometimes Sykes could’ve shot them on the spot remember he still had that gun. Second he probably made them dog hood ornaments on his car to reward them or and this is very unlikely but this still must be acknowledged, deepdown maybe he loves them I don’t know. Also because I love Dolly Dane Dalmatian so much I’m gonna make her a dog hood ornament however I would want her to look older so a Labrador dog would be used as a base line, kind of like opposite day if you consider that the 101 Dalmatians disguised themselves as Labradors in the 1961 film so why can’t they switch rolls this time around?

Very interesting video essay, as usual. Aside from the animation and Why Should I Worry, Sykes is the most memorable thing about Oliver & Company for me. So I'm glad he's getting attention. I can't say for sure what I'd consider a darker Disney villain, though I'm more likely going to find one in an animated TV show than in a movie. On a more personal note, one dark Disney villain moment that really sticks out to me (or two) is when Captain Hook kills off two of his own crew members! Yes villains like The Horned King and Frollo carry a darker gravitas as well as brutally and sadistically kill off multiple people. However, Captain Hook's murders stand out because prior he was being more cheesy and campy, and his motivations were far more petty than religious purging or conquest. Hook was mildly annoyed, which only makes him a bigger threat to me. Like Sykes, Hook is an intelligent villain that can make effectively evil decisions on the flip of a coin. There was no musical or tonal transition to imply his two crew mates would be killed off either.

Ooh, didn't see this choice coming not gonna lie, however, I absolutely agree with you. He's one of Disney's more realistic villains, with motives not uncommon in our real world, so part of what makes him so dark is you can indeed find people like that outside the realm of animation. 1:18 Yep, there you go saying exactly what I said. Great critical minds think alike! 😆 Not to mention the voice acting by Robert Loggia was creepily superb. 👏 Speaking of Mr. Loggia, thought you might want to know that he voiced in a movie alongside your Lord & Savior Tim Curry at one point, and in the one scene they have together, they do a brilliant job butting heads while simultaneously trying to talk things out in a reasonable manner. What is this movie, you ask? Perhaps you recall me mentioning Beauty & the Beast: The Tale of the Crimson Flower on your COTC series...😉 (Curry is the Beast and Loggia plays Stephen, the father of the Beauty).
