All of these men were great Marines. My father served in Pullers First Regiment at Peleliu. When Puller died in 1971, my father went to Puller’s funeral, uninvited. So did many of Puller’s Marines show up. That’s how highly Puller’s men thought of him. Leaders have to earn followers. Puller did just that. Good night Chesty, where ever you are.

It is an impossible choice. Every war is different. All three led by example. None of them fell into the trap of training for the last war.

I can't say one is braver or more honorable than the other. Lejeune was probably the best marine, fighting the political battles, scouting out the future, leading from the front and saving the corps when it had no friends. Puller was probably the best all around fighting man and led the largest fighting formations in the largest wars, standing with his men, leading them out of the trap they had been sent into and saving the UN forces from defeat in detail. Butler was probably the finest all around citizen and a fighting man of fame, but limited means. He was brave and contrary enough to speak out against the greed and national stupidity of manufactured war. He acted with matchless honor against a domestic conspiracy of super rich men that offered him great wealth and power to betray his oath, wanting to make him their little dictator-puppet and depose FDR. Butler went to see FDR and jacked them all up. You can't really pick a 'best.' Each man was crucial in his place and time, and history could have been very different without any of them. Medals are random bling handed out for reasons that have nothing to do with what people deserve.
