This video is a King's Birthday holiday special. It contains video excerpts from the King's Birthday celebrations at Government House in Sydney on 8 June 2024 and a discussion of how the King has many 'birthdays' that are celebrated in addition to his real one.
The video then addresses the question of who is the head of state of Australia. It discusses the claims, made during the 1999 republic referendum debate, that the Governor-General is the head of state of Australia. It considers the relative powers and claims of the King and the Governor-General to be head of state and concludes that while in practice the Governor-General exercises most of the powers of the head of state, the King still formally holds the office of head of state of Australia. After all, we don't celebrate the Governor-General's birthday!
