Very good teaching! It seems to me that when Paul wrote of "the man of lawlessness" he was referring to the end time king in Daniel 11:36: "The king will do as he pleases. He will exalt and magnify himself above every god and will say unheard-of things against the God of gods." Paul almost quotes from this verse when describing this man as exalting himself against every so-called god. In addition, I notice that the word translated "lawlessness" is 'hamartia' in Greek, and appears more than 170 times in the NT. It's almost always translated "sin". And 1 John 3:4 says, "sin is lawlessness". Thus, to me "lawlessness" denotes breaking the law rather than being without law. In any case, we do well to observe what Paul says about this man because he will appear on the world scene before Jesus returns.

We need to note carefully that the man of lawlessness will be a religious figure, not a political one, or at least not mainly a political one. And I think the text most naturally suggests that this man will identify specifically with the Christian faith in some way, although this is not completely clear.

I had hopped Piper would be a partial preterit postmillennial with eschatology. I took this as clearly teaching premillennialism. If you have not researched Postmillennialism please do yourself a favor. Scripture seems incredibly clear that premillennialism is not accurate. RC Sproul does a good job explaining some of the arguments in The Last Days According to Jesus. There’s a lot of other great resources though.

The man of sin or lawlessness that sits in the temple of God...is not the antichrist or any such thing....he is the Adamic man, the natural unregenerate man, the representative man of the falling away. He is not sitting in a literal temple such as the third temple....he is sitting in his own temple ruling and reigning over his own life instead of the One who should be by reason of Creation and Redemption.
