I personally prefer a desperate Joe Chill rather than a criminal mastermind Joe Chill. Its the kind of meaningless and random tragedy that created Batman, and it is something he obsesses over, that he can't let go or truly stop. And it's the perfect punchline to a nihilist like The Joker.

I really like the idea that Chill killed the Waynes not because he wanted to, but because he had to to survive in Gotham. It really hammers home the point that crime is imbedded in the very foundation of the city

+B.J. Stewart Reminds me of a theory of why Batman doesn't just kill the Joker: Because as Batman sees it, the Joker isn't his true enemy: The city itself is, and Batman secretly fears that Gotham will simply replace the Joker with something worse.

He never "had to." Most criminals do not commit murder. He created the chain of circumstances that killed the Waynes. He was responsible for his actions. A real alcoholic would have traded or sold the gun for a bottle, not stolen a necklace it might take days to hock. I prefer the original origin and end of Chill. Also, Batman is haunted by the murders of his parents to this day. It was later said that on Earth One, both Waynes were shot. It was on Earth-Two that Martha Wayne died of a heart attack. Also, Thomas Wayne's mustache is a recent development.

@@RelativelyBest this is actually a really cool theory because it has kinda happened once already. Gotham has countered the creation of Batman (who was far too powerful to handle by regular Mobsters) by creating supervillains so if Batman escalated even more by killing those supervillains it's entirely possible that even more messed up supervillains would rise and escalate the battle until Gotham finally destroys itself by this one guy that actually manages to entirely blow it up

My favorite version of Joe Chill is the new 52 version. The crime boss is too cliche and boring, the complex assassination isn't a good reason behind Bruce's main motivation, and while the I like the ambiguity of not knowing the killer and his motivation, it paints the picture that criminals in the main nemesis of Batman. The new 52's Joe Chill is a product of Gotham City, he's an alcoholic, drug addict, and he's mentally ill. The reason he killed Bruce's parents was for money to indulge himself in narcotics and alcohol and he shot them because his mom's scream scared him. This sets a clear picture that Batman and Bruce have to fix Gotham, not only through his cowl, but through charity and other humanitarian projects to improve Gotham.

@@bigjill7205 I am. I prefer the original, well-written, and noirish version of Chill's end published in 1948. It presented him as the cold-blooded gangster killer he was. The only change I liked was a later story that revealed he had been hired to kill the Waynes. It believably explained why Bruce was not killed too. Drunks do not kill to get money for their "needs," drug addicts do. Chill would have just sold or traded his revolver to get a bottle. It would have been far quicker than trying to fence a pearl necklace. I do not like stories that make criminals out to be "victims of circumstances or society." I spent 32 years in law enforcement and know better.

NO, NO, NO. Batman understands that his parents death is so essential for him to save Gotham so when given a Time travel chance he killed his own parents to kickstart his origin . But the fact that HE killed his very own parents drives him CRAZY. And what I just said is the origin story of The JOKER!!!! He comes back to present only a little early and he doesn't like the batman or Gotham cause he just had enough and is so tired of helping the city that he finally hates it and vows to destroy it. Joker explains this to batman that both their origin is the death of Waynes. And batman is both the killer and the victim. Joker IS the Batman.

I like the thought of both scenarios but I prefer the Joe Chill one over the Joker killing them. With Joe Chill, it's just some random ass guy that killed them, no big conspiracy, no hidden plot, just an unfortunate accident much to the dismay of Bruce who thought his parent's deaths were important and meant something bigger. That scene you showed looked amazing and I want to read that story. With the Joker shooting them, it's awesome that they accidentally created their biggest enemies but it seems like it is like some grander scheme, a twist of fate, was meant to happen and Batman was destined to become Batman and while that is interesting, I find it more interesting that it was just bad luck on his part. I also like what someone else in the comment added, that a petty criminal killing them would teach Batman not to ignore the minor crimes and simply stick to bigger ones because once he learns that it was just a random mugging, is he really not going to care when another family is about to get mugged?
@rimshot2270
@rimshot2270 2 жыл бұрын
Accident? He went up to a decent family doing nothing wrong with a gun to rob them. He deliberately shot the mother and father. He was scared? Too bloody bad! If he was so easily spooked, he shouldn't have been robbing them in the first place. It was no random accident. It was murder!

I like a little bit of it both being unsolved and Joe Chill being the murderer. I remember one story where Cill pieces together that Bruce Wayne is Batman and is convinced that Batman will eventually come to get revenge. Later Chill is hanging from a ledge and Batman offers his help but Chill, panicking, lets go and falls to his death. Batman is left to wonder who he was and why was he so afraid of him that he'd reject his help.

No doubt Joe Chill killed Bruce Wayne's parents, but who pulled the strings. The Joker? Blasphemy! It was obviously the mastermind that created all the superheros, Mopey, the Heavenly Helpmate. I, for one, think Joe Chill as the random, cowardly, drunk mugger is the best way to go. It really adds an element of cruel irony to the murders of the Waynes. Enforces and idea of actions and consequences. It's weird to think that there wasn't some grand conspiracy or destiny for Batman; it just kinda happened. Bruce Wayne forged his own path. One thing I always thought was cool about Batman 89 was that with Jack killing they Waynes meant that he created Batman and then later Batman knocked him into the chemical vat creating the Joker. I've always liked that. Plus when you add in the line from The Dark Knight (I know, different continuity) that Joker says to Batman "I think you and I will be doomed to do this forever." It creates that infinite loop those two have together. It's nice poetry really.

what about that story where batman got teleported in the past seeing his young self and his parents... then he realized that it was the time where his parents were about to get shot so looked for the mugger, but there was no mugger. he then realized that the person who killed his parents, was the future him. and so he had to make the most difficult choice; whether to leave the family be or kill the boy's parents so that batman may be born...

You do realize that you wrote a story where Batman himself had no logical reason to exist _even with_ weird time shit being involved, right? After all, when Harry Potter did it he _wanted_ to save himself in the first place, but Batman has literally no reason to have ever been Batman if _he_ was the one who had to kill his parents.

I came up with this when I was a kid and I just really liked it as a driving force for the character. Where he has managed to refocus this desire for vengeance into a desire to protect and save people. These were just my headcannon from when I was very young and I first started to think critically about the character.

+batlantern That's certainly a valid take on how Batman operates. Myself, I prefer to think that Bruce's parents' deaths was a tragedy (obviously), but more than anything it opened his eyes to the fragility of human life. As such, it's not even really about his parents' deaths any longer; if his parents were to turn up alive through some contrivance, I don't think it would impact his mission at all because their deaths are no longer the point. Bruce / Batman also operates to combat other hazards than crime -- poverty for example, and there have been plenty of times Batman has rescued people from fires and other accidents. So to me, it's not about vengeance, it's about suffering and mortality. Coincidentally enough, the legend of Buddha is that he was a prince named Siddhartha whose father made sure he never had any awareness of human suffering and death, but when he learned of such things, he strove to find a way to defeat them. Siddhartha became an ascetic, while Bruce Wayne made a bat costume and learned to kick almighty ass. Who had the better idea? I sure know whose comics I want to read.

The Ghost of Christmas Past took adult BATMAN Bruce Wayne back in time and gave him the choice of murdering his own parents to create BATMAN or do nothing allowing little Bruce to live a well adjusted life, but great tragedy would befall Gotham and the entire Earth without BATMAN. Bruce decides to kill his own parents because BATMAN is the hero Gotham needs. There. That is my stupid fanfic. Fanfic which is just as legitimate as the 90% shitty stories that comic book companies churn out nowadays minus a piece of paper they have saying they own the rights to someone else's grandpa's ideas.
@praxicoide
@praxicoide 8 жыл бұрын
+donfolstar That aspect is explored in Blind Justice, when Bruce keeps dreaming of killing his parents. Batman needed his parents to die in order to exist. It was a very dark story made to coincide with Detective Comics 600.

I say it makes it more interesting to say that the Joker is responsible for the deaths of the Waynes. Mostly because I love the irony of him creating batman , created the joker. Not to mention, it would fit allot better in the separate reality where Bruce dies and Martha becomes Joker and Thomas becomes batman, Which would state there must always be a Batman and Joker to balance the forces of Good and Evil.

I like the idea that he realized ho mundane his parents' death. It gives him a resolve to not ignore the most insignificant of crimes. He patrols not only for the big guns like Penguin but would tirelessly look for the muggers and thieves. He would understand that bad things happens for no reason due to the lawless environment and thus often personifies crime as a chaotic cloud over Gotham City

Scot...first time writing. First let me say Love your videos!!!! I watch a few others but yours is my favorite...love your humor and style! Okay...I totally 100% agree that Joe Chill is the "official killer" of the Waynes! No arguement from me! I am just surprised you didn't mention Lew Moxon from Detective comics #235 Sept. 56! (Of course you may have mentioned it in your reference to Chill being a hitman for the mob in other stories.) Anyway I know Moxon didn't actually kill the Waynes...but according to "The First Batman" story referenced above he did hire Chill to act as a holdup man in order to kill the Waynes thus making him indirectly responsible for their deaths. But I hold it is Chill -and I like the idea of Batman never solving the case thus this being the motivation for his war on crime as every criminal becomes the one who has "killed his parents" and thus he is always looking for him in every criminal he fights. Your videos rock man!!!
