Also I guess it would be more accurate to say they hate straight male gamers, but that is the majority of the consumer base whether they want to admit it or not. And if you need confirmation of their hatred of those gamers it's not hard to find, either directly from their mouths in videos, on their social media, in the articles they write, or with the pretty blatant agenda that has become a central theme to the games they work on.

But most of these characters aren't. They seem forced. It's not only that. How do you make a gay character appeal to the audience when majority of people in US are straight? We can't appeal to those we cannot understand. Even if you are gay. Try getting a straight person to understand how a gay persons love story feels like. A story puts you the reader or watcher in the shoes of the character. And it's very difficult to put a person who's straight into the shoes of a gay person. We don't understand.

Gamedev here who works on cozy games: Cozy doesn't mean "boring". Most City Builders you can describe as "Cozy". Cozy describes games that are more about having great atmosphere, things to watch and not to have massive punishment for experimentation. Dave the Diver I'd call a Cozy game for the most part. Its not that deep in gameplay, but it spins a nice story, atmosphere and fantasy with enough depth to enjoy it. They are also about stories (when they have them) that make you feel positive e.g. helping others.

Infinite money makers(live service slops with few hits like Helldivers), incredible single player rollercoasters(Uncharted, God of War) and reflections of our existence(Nier Automata, 13 Sentinels). The comparison would be making a man watch a chickflick in which we cannot understand why women love these types of movies or shows. The reason why is because a game will place you the audience into the characters shoes. And something like their sexuality comes into the mix. straight men cannot understand. It's not because we hate gay people that's not the case at all. It's just we cannot understand because it's not our appeal. The game does not appeal to the people they are trying to sell it to. I'll give you an example. Master Chief. What makes him appealing? He represents hope, survival, etc. Men can see and appeal to him because they themselves can relate. Asterion. What makes him appealing? His sassyness appeals to the female fantasy. Every good written character has something that the audience when placed into their shoes can relate to. And if the character is openly gay and acts gay when you're asking a straight person to place themselves into their shoes. They can't understand it. Because we cannot relate.

Sarah Connor is a girl boss that I can root for as a straight man. She’s endearing, has a great backstory, and knows her limits as a female despite the odds stacked against her favor with gigachad Schwarzenegger chasing after her. I love stories that aren’t afraid to explore weaknesses of the main character. Some of the best shows like Good Time, Mr Robot, and Fight Club really explore those weaknesses and it makes for compelling storytelling. There’s a huge difference between genuine gay characters and virtue signaling placeholders. For example, I found out that Judy from Cyberpunk 2077 was lesbian only because I liked her so much, that I started showing romantic interest in her as a male protagonist. After a couple of failed attempts she just said, that she was into girls. It was unexpected, because it wasn’t performative. There isn’t a single “pride” attribute at her house, she never mentions it in any way, shape, or form, until she absolutely has to. And that I respect, even though I was heartbroken lmao
