Totally agree 😊 It reminded me of my recent visit to my local art "museum" (don't know how to call it, art gallery sounds like a place with contemporary art you can buy to me) with my partner. I did a lot of explaining about certain artists, methods of restauration and whatnot and several times other visitors joined to listen to my explanations 😊. Made me feel very happy that apparently I had something interesting to share. Lucy's videos feel like this, like listening to someone telling the interesting stuff in a personal way.

I went to a Catholic school, around 1985 ish when we were around 14 we went on a two day religious retreat at a convent in Baddesley (just an excuse for a laugh for us and there were girls going). We slept on a platform/balcony that used was part of the brewing process, when the nuns once made beer, the platform was for them to put hops and water into massive vats. The priest took us on a midnight walk and we passed the house, they were shooting an episode of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett, it was pitch black but the house was floodlit, I'll never forget it, amazing memory.

Wow! Thank you so much for sharing that, incredible! I love the fact school trips in the past it was totally okay to just kip out on a balcony .. imagine that happening now? I would have loved to have seen the house flood lit, I bet it looked like it was floating on the moat x

They were amazing!! There was no such thing as neurodiversity when I was a kid (like there was but no one said anything) and they totally indulged my obsessions with houses, aviation and later art. I especially enjoyed this tour, Lucy. So many times, you see a historic home that's been opened to the public after it's been lived in my modern people who wanted modern amenities and atmosphere, so they have torn out so much of the real history of the place that its history can't be represented without almost gutting the place and constructing "recreations". With this house, I can feel all the ages of the house, from the beginning until now. It feels lived it, not just a showplace.
@throughlucyslens5 ай бұрын
Absolutely, I agree. Baddesley Clinton even smells right - you can't recreate the smell of age - it's not a bad smell but you can smell the oak and the tapestries. I've been to places that smell like Dulux and that doesn't seem quite right 🤣

@ejusdem_generis5 ай бұрын
@@throughlucyslens what rotten luck! I hope your car wasn’t too damaged and everything is fixed now. There’s a bit of that going on here in QLD. Just this week a friend had a parcel stolen from their doorstep. Not five minutes after the postie dropped it there, it was gone. Plenty of cars are being broken into for coins, tradies tools, anything they can get their hands on. Insurance costs me around $900 a month, but despite the cover it’s never nice to have your car or home violated. My 80+ year old neighbours phoned me on Saturday night, they’ve had a security camera installed. Look at them go! We probably all need to get security cameras/dash cams I suppose. Too many people are short of money and crime rates are on the rise. Work can be rubbish at the best of times, you’re a smart and capable lady, you’ll be right. I hope your weekend is much, much, better! Stay safe and be positive, you are important to your viewers. And remember to promote your kofi account, after your week you could do with a few cakes/slices/scones/anything sweet to go with them. J

It's like visiting with a friend, down to earth and trying to poke your way into the nitty gritty of these places. Thank you so much Lucy, it's such a joy to follow you on your adventures - we are blessed ! Take special care 🙂 XXX

Thank you for taking us to Baddesley Clinton, a place I had not heard of before. I did enjoy that, and was that a ghost? There was certainly something there! If only walls could talk, what stories they could tell us.

I haven't got a clue what it was, it was so weird! While I was standing there I thought someone brushed past me but I was on my own, I checked the camera when I got back and was like .. gosh.. but my husband thinks it's dust .. he has no whimsy ;) ! x

@@throughlucyslens They usually dress the house with a tree and I believe they light the fires, did it quite a few years ago and enjoyed a lovely christmas dinner in the cafe on dec 23rd. not sure if they still do christmas dinners though, but it can't be hard to find out. I think they dress Packwood house too, not as historic as Baddesley but still nice to do as a joint visit as it's about 2 - 3 miles away. They usually do some nice events at old Mosely Hall over christmas too.

First time I've seen one of your videos and really enjoyed it. It's only an hour and a half from us, so I'm hoping we can get there in the next couple of weeks. We're members of the NT, so would be a fairly cheap day out for us. I'm obsessed with medieval manor houses. Ightham Mote in Kent is another great one and Athelhampton in Dorset has always been one of my favourites.

Thanks so much! I would recommend Mondays or Tuesdays if your schedule allows it, weekends especially Sundays can get pretty busy, if you so come down hop across to Packwood House a few miles up the road too, not as old as Baddesley but beautiful gardens and lovely walks ❤️

@@throughlucyslens I used to work there as a ranger, so I know it well along with Emmetts, Chartwell and Knole Park too. It's the only place in the country with a Grade 1 Listed Dog Kennel. It was made for the owner's St Bernard Dido, and the story is she was so big, they had to give her her food in a washing up bowl.

My partner's grandma found a priest hole in her house in the 1960s! It had an original Tudor fresco in it which was carefully removed and reinstalled in Thame museum- along with a lot of her belongings after she died. She was a woman after your own heart and documented very carefully the history of Thame. Really interesting and I wish I had met her but I love the museum I know his mum would love to talk about when they found the fresco in her childhood home if you wanted to make a video on it ☺️

I loved this video, like you I've loved History. With me it was first year in secondary school, our form teacher taught history. We learnt about the early wooden Keeps and mud huts. We made a model for parents to see on open day following year 1958. I collected grass and dried for the hut roofs. Other girls made pipe cleaner people made clothes. I would like to know more about Wolverhampton where my dad came from. We did visit family very occassionaly. In latter years Derek and myself had a few weekly breaks. First one in Oswestry at a Premier Inn, we drove over to Wolverhampton to see a couple of aunties for a day's visit. After they had passed away we had by then been in touch with Dad's youngest sister who lived in Wombourne on the South side. We stayed at a Premier Inn at Kingswinford a short 15 minute drive to Womborne. Aunty' told us several times to visit the Black Country Museum, we eventually, did that. ( I have seen your video of that visit, sweet memories). During another visit to Aunty's I met up with some online craft friends from Woverhampton. They mentioned going to a craft shop in the area. We didn't go then as we're leaving for home. But following visit we did go, It is at a winery. We had lunch there and I spent quite a few pennies. I've also watched your visit to the Austin village this morning, very interesting. Must get my washing out on the line.
@throughlucyslens5 ай бұрын
Hope your washing came back in :) Thanks so much for sharing! One of my favourite history lessons was making a Roman SPQR army banner - I took it so seriously and spent hours and hours painting it, my lovely dad cut all the wood and my mom showed me how to apply gold leaf. I walked in with it proud as punch and it was in the school entrance hall for years! I should imagine it's long gone now. I haven't been to Wolverhampton much myself but I know it has a rich industrial history - I will keep my eye out for places near by :)

Hi Lucy! That was a great little tour of a museum/home you loved visiting as a young child! Oh yes…hearing a “ murder tale” and getting up close to the blood?!?? I would have begged to go visiting there every chance I got! As I’m sure you can imagine….The Biden Resignation today really threw me for a loop! I’m totally exhausted and feel like “logic” isn’t a word so many people want to relate too! Ugh! Oh oh oh…I wasn’t able to see Backbeat, the film you said was your very favorite about the early days of the Beatles. I can’t stream it, buy it, not available here in the States anywhere! Oh well, I will find it…I’m determined ! Have a great week, take care…💕Linda

Linda drop me an email (it's in my bio) I'll sort it out for you! I'm sure I have a copy you can watch through our server (my husband is an IT wizz - nothing to do with me) cant promise but I can try. It's a British film so maybe doesn't have rights on US streaming platforms. You know when it comes to world politics nothing shocks me anymore: I had a feeling it was probably on the cards, I mean president of the US or prime minister are both on my list of jobs I would NEVER want to do!

My Baddesley has to be Belton House at Grantham I joined National Trust there 18 years ago and been a member since It's been an annual pilgrimage ever since The infamous Wallace Simpson stayed there during some of the public outcry around the abdication Then there's Blickling Hall Aylsham Norfolk (film and military connections) Felbrigg Hall near Cromer (moated house) Similar to yourself, it's not always about the owners, but the staff, the associated uses and the connections I've been enthralled by my national trust adventure's, not only in my home county of north yorkshire, but Nottinghamshire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Hampshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Cornwall Not so easy these days, but I try to explore when health allows, which I guess is the other draw to you and your wonderful channel Geoff
