I bought a Sig Romeo 5 for a cheap AR build I did a couple of years ago. I've since moved that Romeo 5 to like 5 different guns and beat the ever loving hell out of it. It's still fine. I was really surprised by it. Kinda wish I would've bought a holosun instead just cuz I think that circle dot would be nice for close range but I am using the Sig optic on a much more gucci AR now, I even put it on a Unity mount(that cost way more than the optic lmao). I simply don't give a fuck. It definitely isn't the best optic for NVG use--in fact its probably one of the worst ones. But for regular day time use? Its fine. I may replace it with a Romeo 4T tho.

One thing to note, a big benefit to high output lights (especially with a lot of spill) comes when you are entering structures from outside, during the day. Your eyes will adapt to the outside light but when you make entry there is that delay while you adjust, whereas anyone inside is ready to go. A nice bright light brings that light level up to what you are acclimated to, and puts ppl inside at a disadvantage.

One of your better/informative videos. I will now link to this whenever someone asks so I can avoid having to ever talk about lights again. I use to be a "all the candela guy". But then I actually bought all of the lights and realized it doesn't really matter Buy what makes sense for your budget. The added candela is nice. But not enough to bankrupt yourself over. It's probably the last place on a rifle I'd spend serious cash on (beyond a baseline HLX/streamlight)

I think people just need to be honest with themselves about what they need it for. If you are doing home defense in your apartment you don't need a light with 300 yards of throw. HL-X is fantastic. The HL-X 2 has a much improved recharging system, although I prefer the 1.0 tail cap when I’m not using the pressure pad. Unlike Hop, I much prefer rechargeable. Rechargeable + some small solar panels = unlimited battery life, and batteries can be topped up at all times rather than worrying about whether or not it’s time to replace a half used battery.

Just remember even if you have a momentary switch or off switch it will not prevent any light refraction from outside sources. Inside the housing of the light head is made very reflective for obvious reasons and some certain groups of people are training to find their enemies via exploiting this. I'd recommend getting a cap for your light as well that way even if you do have a white light ND it adds another layer of fail safe.

There are various rubber bikini type scope caps, specifically the ACOG 4x and Aimpoint ones, that work great for this, just snip off one end leaving a few inches of the side straps and zip tie it to the body of the light. Just give it enough tension that it is out of the way when it’s not in use.

Fun fact, you can convert a regular SF scout tailcap to momentary-only by disassembling it, taking the internal button mechanism and trimming off the nibs that do the latching. I either use that or a UE07 switch on M300c's. I think the 300's (Arisaka/Malkoff included) are the best combo of form and function. Yeah, they don't have a bazillion lumens or candela, but they check the box, have the most mounting options, and don't take up a bunch of space on the gun. And when you push the button you get white light. Yay.

14 years in the Military/25 years as a State Trooper SWAT Team Member, we used Surefire and Streamlight's, they worked well except for the remote switch wire would frequently fail and the lights were heavy!. I know lots of people say these are no good, but I have run them for 10+ years and the Gen 2's work great.

As a person who has only recently entered the gun world, I've learned an alarming amount from your content. Having said that, the most striking thing to me about the gun community is the financial logic it uses. We're talking about HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS for a flashlight. Not just a flashlight, but one that you will use "for as little as possible, as quickly as possible." It's like spending a million dollars for a Bugatti, but only using it to get to the end of the driveway to collect your mail. It's probably because i'm not that far into it yet.....

As someone in law enforcement, the go to has always been Streamlight for handguns. Bought an HLX for my old patrol rifle and loved it enough to put one on my 11.5" AR pistol. My old patrol rifle has the standard rail mount and the 11.5 has an Arisaka offset scout mount. My new patrol rifle is department provided and has an HLX with the standard mount. They aren't fancy, but they just fucking work. Never had a problem with Streamlight lights.

Hop- thanks for this video. I’ve been looking to get into a Scout for a build but couldn’t justify $500-$600 once adding tape switch, tailcap, mount, etc. The Arisaka website saved me a bunch of money, and I wouldn’t even known that was an option without this video. Mostly a Streamlight guy here for most carbines and handguns (no love for the TLR RM1 & RM2?) and cracked up at your Olight comment. Admittedly have two in the collection as well, PL Pro Valkyrie one of the home defense handguns (for the quick release) and an Odin shared between AR builds (like the quick release M-Lok mount and momentary variable tailcap- easy to swap between builds). No question they aren’t up to par with the rest of the brands, but I wish other brands would take notice of some of the features they have- I’m glad they are at least willing to innovate. For less serious builds, the features may outweigh the quality, especially the ability to share a light easily. Anyways, thanks again! Was glad for an excuse to add a scout style light to the collection!

Great break down. I just recently purchased a SF DUAL FUEL. I went with the 00 tail cap, due to the low output of the regular plug in without the button. It was odd, but I really wanted the 00 anyways for the backup button. Just didn’t want to spend the extra till the basic cap didn’t work right. But I would like the okw head or the Arisaka head. Cause my cheap “not cheap” olight has way better throw. But I don’t like the olight for many reasons. The only thing it has going for it, is that it is easy to use as a hand held light with its quick release mount. It was my first real weapon light. That I quickly regretted buying.

I've bought two Streamlights (ProTac and ProTac HL-X). The first is weapon mounted and the second is hand-held. I've used the weapon mounted for maybe 10 hours and the handheld for two years. Both costs roughly $150. The handheld Streamlight ProTac randomly fails to turn on about 1 in 40 times. To power on the light when it's not activating, unscrew the battery cap then screw it back on again. Then it works normally until the next random failure. The chaotic nature of the handheld Streamlight makes me distrust all their weapon mounted lights.

The M640V Pro is in all reality a really good deal for what it’s capable of. For the price you get a bomb proof dual output light (that works amazingly under NODs) and hangs with the big dogs as a white light, has a very useable mount and a true momentary on/off tailcap. And it’s remarkably low on battery drain when used in IR. Im surprised more companies haven’t tried to make their own offerings. Yes it’s $430 (the 300V @$400) but you don’t really need to spend any extra money to get it to mount where you want and activate it in a ergonomic and intuitive fashion. I’ve loved mine.

That being said, none of mine have ever broke, and I have 4 or five of them, plus they are brighter then the 2 surefires I do own. ....I started with streamlight because, I am not a operator, operating, operationally, and then got some nice $2k-$3500 rifles and wanted to put "better" accessories on them, so the internet operators told me I needed surefires, i bought two of them, and they are dimmer, and one flickers when used with a tape switch.(I have tried multiple tape switches, it is the light for sure).
