I think for me therapy has meant I have a safe space to breakdown and release my frustrations without the societal expectation of "indoda ayikhali"... I am not in a space where I am happy or content with myself, I thought I would have so much to show for my 20s but I also have the understanding that things take time. Thank you guys for giving us a space to relate and learn. 🌻

It's great to see the different perspectives. Matladi sees therapy as a tool for crisis management, Lucas sees it as tool necessary even in the absence for crisis...more to optimize self awareness.

For me I went to therapy because I realised I hadn't dealt with grieving my parents' deaths. Which created coping mechanisms like numbing pain by drinking, mindless sex etc. I also realised I had childhood trauma that affected my self image and overall temperament. These things resulted in heavy anxiety, depression, anger issues even. Now I knew I had these problems so I needed a way to firstly forgive people, forgive myself and most importantly go through the emotions. So I needed therapy to help me through getting through and understanding why I had these issues. Therapy helped me understand these issues and uncover other things that I also had to work through. The result was healing and growth.
@LUNNGII
@LUNNGII Жыл бұрын
In addition. I don't necessarily believe therapy is a forever thing. I don't want to go to therapy for 5 years about the same issue. As human beings we grow and learn and go through seasons. Sometimes we just need help along the way. It's like maintaining a garden. After winter the things are dry and brown and they need fertaliser, not just water. Therapy is like fertiliser.

Lastly. Find a therapist that relates to you (my opinion). If you're a black man, find a black man. If you're a black woman, find a black woman.

I often like to think of therapy (whatever form it comes in because there is a multiplicity, traditional and non traditional) as wisdom. It gives you a better grasp on self which, if anything, helps you navigate yourself and your experiences better. Which is why an open mind is encouraged. For Thato, his session may not have been the most helpful however, he got wisdom out of that. For someone else, it could be understanding that you’re simply human; flawed and growing. Moving with a better sense of self awareness. I look forward to seeing how your perspectives change in the next few months

I love how Lucas will first think his words before speaking, and then articulate himself the best way possible. Matladi, speak your mind and that’s OK. You do not have to apologise. You might learn that from therapy as well, and I’m sure you know that you can speak your mind but therapy sort of confirms a lot of things we might be doubtful about, and guides us. However, I commend you for holding your stance that you don’t need therapy.

I've been to therapy Matladi and I would say it has served multiple purposes for me. I'll mention 3 which have been very key in helping me to understand myself. The first is that there is an external observer with years of experience who listens to my thought process and interrogates it with me. Why does the thought keep coming up? What are the tools to manage it? The other purpose is the ability to offload without disturbance and without the feeling that there's a limit to the number of times you can bring something up before you start being burdensome. So let's say you're struggling with a thing. You go to a friend, and they listen the first time and might even give a solution. The next time you're struggling with that same thing, now you feel a way about bringing it up again, but you're still struggling. With therapy, you can offload your struggles without the feeling that you are burdening someone with your repeated struggles. Lastly, it has given me tools that have helped me to cope with anxiety because, at every moment, I was always either regretting the past or stressed about the future. But I didn't know that. I thought they were just thoughts. It taught me how to be mindful and live presently so that the present does not become a past that I regret and I can manage a future that has not happened yet.

Really enjoyed this chat and how open and honest it was. A lot of the times when people think of therapy they think its going to shrink who will help you sort out your life's problems when in actuality it's not what it was designed to do. Therapy or therapists are more of the tour guides of your emotions and behavioural patterns, the goal isnt to tell you what's wrong or right with with you, but it's to help you figure it out whatever it is that brought you there in a safe space. I would also like to add that, it doesn't mean something is wrong with you if you're going to therapy. It's just an outlet to talk, IN A SAFE SPACE. sometimes we just need to talk, about anything and nothing and it's totally ok. Sometimes we just need to in a place that helps us feel grounded and safe and for some people its their therapist, for others its their family etc. But we need to let go of the notion that something must be wrong/ go wrong upstairs/ internally in order to start seeing a theri. It's also important to have a good connection with your therapist because that will determine how safe you feel and which has an influence on your progress at times. I've heard stories from some people about havinv bad experiences with mental health professionals, for those you who have, I would like to apologise on behalf of the professionals in my field, there's still so much training and monitoring that needs to be done in this field of work. Don't let that experience prevent you from getting the help you may need because there are really good therapists and counsellors out there. For the self-healers check out the holistic psychologist on IG, thats the link to her page instagram.com/the.holistic.psychologist?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= And selfhealers.circle instagram.com/selfhealers.circle?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= I hope you'll find them helpful in some way. But amazing work guys. Keep it up

I think the value of therapy is awareness. You get diagnosed by a professional and are given tools or treatment that is able to help you in ur daily life. Therapists are objective and knowledgeable which I think is better than any person could offer to themselves. Anyone can think back to situations where an objective opinion from someone carried more weight than what you could offer to yourself.

I agree that eskom should be privatized but it can't be privatized at this current moment due to the fact that the shareholders/owners will have too much power over the country in terms of being a monopoly in supply of electricity. I think the best solution is to have other means of electricity supply which can give eskom a wake up call resulting in the fixing their issues to try stay relevant in the market. But that also comes with another issue because the alternative suppliers of electricity will definitely be more expensive as eskom is subsidised by the government which makes It more "affordable" to everyone so its a very tricky situation because then it will create a whole other issue.

Lucas is right. Its not just about "privatizing" Eskom. Its about putting competent people at the helm of Eskom. South Africa has 300 - 400 years of coal reserves. We can only focus on finding alternative energy sources once we have professionals who run Eskom and its power stations well. The skilled professionals exist, they need to be given a chance. Privatising Eskom is not the answer for ordinary South Africans. Maybe NERSA should give licenses to alternative private electricity suppliers. The country's electricity grid cannot be held ransom by a private company. We should have the option of using Eskom or a private company, not turn Eskom into a private company.
