Play less. Sound better. I was blessed to attend Jazz Mobile here in NYC. I was in Jimmy Heaths theory class. That was one of the things he shared with us during a class. If you play everything you know in the first measure of the first song of the set…….whatcha gonna do in the second song ? The First Family of Jazz .

As a side note, James Mtume’s Uncle was the great Percy Heath, bassist for the Modern Jazz Quartet and the Heath Brothers. His father was Jimmy Heath, the group’s saxophonist. As a college student, I attended a workshop the Heath Brothers ran and Percy attempted to show me how he got such a great tone out his bass by letting me play it the way he showed me to. I did not sound as good as him.😊 Mr. Percy told me that he could make his upright sound like a bass guitar when he wanted to and that he he demonstrate that night when they would play the commercial song James Mtume produced on what was then their current album. I was at the concert, and my jaw dropped when Mr. Percy Heath indeed made that upright sound just like a P-bass!

I stumbled upon this vid looking up some of Raymond’s music. Despite coming across this channel many time wishing the year, I am compelled to leave a comment. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting & working with this man. The things I’ve seen this man do on a bass guitar inspired me to pick one. During the early 90’s I’ve met him via my neighbor and became one of my producers between 93-97. Those who are aware of his genius know his capabilities. To watch this man in action is a blessing. The technique where he plays bass over synth bass is a classing signature in my opinion. I’ve learned a lot from this man and I salute @pdbass for shedding light on this legend 🙏🏽

I am frequently curious to know much more about specific pre-amps, speaker ohms - even pick-ups ( uprights specifically) that the artist that you have covered, use on their bass parts.
