I love the way you treat your animals. God gave us dominion over the animals, and I've read that the word dominion can translate as responsibility (rather than dominance). We are responsible for animals so we take good care of them and their needs. I also love how much research you and the older girls, in particular, do before bringing a new creature to Fairhaven. One request: more garden updates! What you've done is amazing for your first summer.

Black Snakes will eat your chicken eggs. When I was a kid I had to check the nests for eggs every day and I stood on my tiptoes to peek in to be sure there were no snakes because they would curl up in the nest after eating the eggs. I am sure you already know that, but as a little girl, I was frightened to walk into the coop.

I grew up in Aiken County and my parents own a couple hundred acres. There are copperheads, timber & pygmy rattlesnakes, along with water moccasins. Interestingly enough I only saw a few venomous snakes growing up and I was in the woods all the time. Oh and my 16 yr old is excited about what you're wanting to do with your farm. She has volunteered with equine therapy before and loves it.

One of the first cautions I taught my girl her in California (when she was 2) is to listen for the rattle, then run. Later as a Girl Scout on a trail near Burbank(!) it came in very handy. None of the girls were bit.

Timothy hay is SUCH a common cause of allergies. We changed hay so that my husband could be around it because it started like you with a tickle, and one day he ended up in hospital barely able to breathe - was terrifying. The nee hay was more expensive but if you’re around it a lot, living on a farm, it’s worth changing as fresher hay that’s not been dry is less likely to irritate allergies but also it’s nicer and better for animals digestive wise too!

My two thoughts from this were that I always appreciate your ability to keep it real and make sure that people understand that you're part of the unit. I wonder if people think that you do it all because most families don't have both parents at home full-time so they view what's being accomplished through that lens. And on the note about your weight I'm guessing you are just much more lean because girl y'all have been busy for the past year between prepping your old home and all you have done on the farm. Our rooster would flogg me all the time. I would not open the gate to the chicken run until I knew where he was. The word flogging has always been used where I came from in PA. If you have never experienced it, be grateful. He would chase me around the chicken run jumping at my back and grabbing my skin clothing or whatever, but he did give me some nasty bites.
