Every one of them has a point. This issue is becoming so divisive to us Filipinos who have nothing to do with "their" war in the first place. We have our own self determination, said the lady. And I agree. To the superpowers, we are just a battlefield -- a Normandy, or a Gettysburg or a Stalingrad -- a tiny piece in the overall picture. To China, we are just a buffer zone. To America, we are an insurance of their Pacific power. But to us, this is it... Our livelihood, our families, our lives, everything that matters to us... This is it. ...and they're threatening at each other above our heads as if we're insignificant. ...as if we're just pawns.

The relationship between China and the Philippines was relatively good before, but since their current President took office, the times have suddenly changed. China is a bully and wants to seize our territories that used to be the fishing grounds of our fishermen and especially when China found out that there is a lot of oil in the WPS, so their claims intensified and their behavior worsened. Back in the day they didn't occupy the territories of other countries but when they got rich they started grabbing territory.

@@LawasSarawak The Spratly group of islands or WPS was not claimed by us but that belonged to the Philippines since before and many proofs were shown in the arbitration that the WPS or Spratly group of islands is part of the Philippines more than 100 maps were shown. So our representatives were there at the arbitration in the Hague and proved our real historical claim. You Communist Chinese where were you when you were called arbitrarily. Why aren't you there? Because you know that you have no proof and your 9 dashline was just made up by you and has no basis. However, the historical claim is not accepted nowadays, especially your fake claim of 9 dash lines. What exists today is the UNCLOS signed by countries and decided by countries so that there is no abuse like yours.

@@LawasSarawak Not only the WPS is invalid China's claim but the entire SCS is invalid because their claim of dashline or 9 dashline according to their own drawing on their map is not accepted. According to them that their drawn 9 dashline is a proof that China owns the entire SCS including the WPS. If the dashlines are the basis of the territory or claim, does that mean that the entire Gulf of Mexico can also be drawn by Mexico along with the EEZ of the US? Does that mean India can also draw a dashline in the Indian Ocean and claim it? And even the Arabian Sea can be drawn with a dash line and claimed by the Arabs? Even the entire Persian Gulf can be drawn as a dash line to be claimed by Iran? None of them made such a dashline because they knew how far they covered and especially now that all countries have to comply with international law or UNCLOS

Asking ordinary citizens is close to being pointless, most of them don't understand what's really going on. Asking politicians isn't a complete different case as well, most of them lie. This is an odd point in history where the people who knew are held by their throats or voluntarily silence themselves; the people who don't know kept shooting breezes and are, unfortunately, often believed.

@@remisu5917 You're a perfect example. You haven't carefully read what I wrote and here you're putting words to my mouth. The motivation that a civilian would typically take in deciding what behavior to display is generally harnessed towards what they feel or experience. This seems very harmless and reasonable at first glance, however this is the same reason why they're unable to see the bigger picture. Let's take the Philippine history for example. We've been enslaved in our own motherland for 300+ years because our ancestors were blinded by the cross, mirrors, clothing etc that the "friendly" Spaniards has to offer.. making them unable to see real intentions of these conquistadors. And if that alone doesn't prove that there are people who will dig their own grave, I don't know what will.

Ordinary citizens like me wont budge more on the issues because its too complex to solve. The existing UNCLOS law that supposedly protect the country is not absolute and any powerful member like China can tend to ignore its ruling. As result even if China won't recognize it does big economies put sanctions to China? The reality is that they tend to ignore the win of the Philippines and China continue to claim the WPH and big economies continue to do business with China. The only possible definite solution is that we make Philippines super rich, technologically advance and deterrence capable military to China and we cannot do that if we cannot make it to advance economy and technologically advance. In fact the country is infested with social issues and environment sustainability issues that its even harder for the country to advance and even compete with its faster advancing neighbors. To not to exhaust yourself, you can join them, or join an ally, join protest on streets hoping for a miracle or watch their bidding.

This is a misleading media report, ask Mexicans if China or the US is more of a threat to them. The so-called geopolitics, of course, is that neighboring countries are more likely to create a sense of psychological deterrence. The correct comparison is to ask whether the threat of China attacking the Philippines because of the South China Sea dispute is greater, or whether the United States illegally intervenes in the Taiwan Strait dispute and uses the Philippine base to attack China, causing the Philippines to be attacked by China. The threat is greater.

Finally someone with a brain here! The threat of China trying to own and monopolize the entire South China Sea is much greater! None of that will be shared to any other country besides China and everyone else will become poorer because of it.

Yea sure, except you are forgetting the factor being "if China has the capability to do so". China sent a fleet pass Japan's Tsugaru Strait, which is between Japan main island and Hokkaido, during covid after Japan set some restrictive policies against China. Tsugaru Strait is deemed as national waters only because Japan wanted to give convenience to commercial convoys so they pulled back borders of their territorial waters, and here comes China driving their navy fleet through. What a great way to exploit other people's kindness, and proves China would not hesitate to provoke other nations in their waters if possessing the capability. Also, who is the one claiming West Philippines Sea is their territory on the basis of a map from a Dynasty they overthrew, is it the US claiming that?

@@DKBZA It's on the news bro, both in CN and JP. CN news even brags about it and their foreign spokesman answered questions about it with some whataboutism just like what you are doing here, he did not say they are not provoking, but instead "We can see some country is the actual aggressor here". I read Chinese and I see all the war mongering articles put out on Global Times and Xinhua News ok? That's why I see far more aggression from China because their state news head editor says things like "If we lose a war, we gonna nuke the Earth''s core and take the world with us" and all the comments bellow praises this kind of speech ok? And there was a trend for pubs throwing parties celebrating assassination of former JP prime minister. Also, you should really read through my words or go see a map, passing Tsugaru Strait is not "near Japan", it's literally crossing through the middle. it's like driving into Sulu sea of the Philippines level. You are the one that's disinformed, stop making yourself look foolish defending a foreign government feeding hate against any democratic country to their people. Outwardly they say they are implementing democracy in their own own way, while interiorly they just teach kids that they must obey the party and the Chairman. Educate yourself, because "little kid with anime profile pic" here lived in 4 countries, reads and speaks 3 languages and has a wider source of information. The thing is Philippines actually tried pivoting from US to China. Our former president was openly campaigning for a shift from US to China-Russia Alliance. His administration also prioritized Belt and Road Initiative projects. China just got more bold in their incursion. They used this opportunity to survey possible resources and strategic locations. They put structures near our military bases. They even found possible locations for oil drilling operations. Also there's a market in China for rare, endangered corals. This causes them to dredge coral reefs, destroying the Aquatic biodiversity in the area. We found out the hard way that the more we listen to them, the more they will intrude. and they never considered peace and cooperation. The Philippines is just too strategic of a location, it has raw materials as well. A mouth-watering treat for any burgeoning power. The Spanish Empire knew this. The British Empire knew this The United States knew this. The Japanese Empire knew this. The Islamic State knew this And now China.

A lot of documented plan to overthrow Spanish colonizers and even 200,000 filipinos died in Filipino-American war. Unlike China, Philippines didn't have the chance in continuing most of its pre-colonial traditional practices because Spaniards erased most of it. Filipinos are killed once Spaniards knew they are betraying Spain. Yes and inspite of the economic benefit, the oridnary philipino hated the americans. The same is true in Okinawa, where every year ~10,000 Okinawans demonstrate for the removal of the US military. What's interesting is that even with US propaganda talking all the time about China invading Taiwan, the Okinawans still demonstrated every year to get the US military bases out. There's a reason for this, when the US military is there in large numbers they treat the locals like dirt. Everytime decade after decade. We're the imperial empire of USA, everyone is afraid of our miitary. This is what every US soldier/sailor is taught and that's part of the reason they treat the locals like dirt.

Let's not kid ourselves. The Philippines has been a willing participant for the American noose around China and Russia for decades. It's a willing vassal to choke China's trade should the US choose to contain China with its unilateral assumption that the US owns every ocean and every market. So yeah, China pushes and encroaches to give itself a wide margin and buffer zone. The Philippines and the SCS is no different than Ukraine.

2:16 unfortunately, many Filipinos tend to think this way. Inasa na lang lahat sa mga Kano ang tungkulin na dapat Pilipinas naman ang gumaganap. There's nothing wrong in strengthening our alliance, but what some people fear is that the Philippines might fall again to the curse of over-reliance to the US when it comes to defense matters which results to the government becoming more complacent and their sense of urgency is diminished. We're located in a region that is ripe with tensions, we can't afford to slack off, we cannot delegate everything to another country, we're a sovereign nation and should act as one if we want to be respected.

Here are my takes in this issues: 1. We don't really mind who will rule the world in the future. We all know that this war is all because of world dominance. 2. If China will just be friendly to us Filipinos and honor our claims which is just within our natural territory? We will be surely closer to Chinese people. If China will just avoid aggression and give us what we claimed? We might end up helping the Chinese to secure their intentions. 3. We (Filipinos) all know that China need this so called 'South China Sea". They need it for trades amd homeland security. They need to dominate this sea inorder to secure their future route. But, they don't need to be aggressive and water Canon or chase our small fisherman's boats just to impose their dominance. 4. I my self have my mainland Chinese blood runs through my vain (my great-grandfather was a migrant during China's great famine). But if China will forcefully take what is closer to us, or what is rightfully to us? I definitely welling to die for my country. 5. We don't need American military presence in our land. We Filipinos always have a chilling impressions regarding having American military base AGAIN in our country. If China read and study our history? We kicked out American bases because we don't really need them. But if China will continue these aggressively? China should know (if they study Phils war history) that despite our short comings regarding armaments and manpower? We Filipinos don't give up. We will fight tell the end, we always have. Spain 333yrs, US for decades, Japan despite superior and more advanced. We can drag China down economy if war will happens, yes we might suffer more, but definitely China economy will never be the sam again eafter this war. Conclusions: Look, we all know that in order for China to take the number 1 superpower from US is either to go to war? Or to wait till they surpass US economy and world dominance. With these? China should avoid bullying other smaller nations just to reiterate their dominance. China should increase their deplomatic ties especially with their neighboring countries. For sure Philippines will be the first nation to back them up. For the reasons that we have more Chinese mixed blood than any Western world. We have the oldest China town. With that said. May we all live in peace and prosperity and be guided with grace by our ancestors and may God bless us with his holy wisdom. Salamat po!

I have talked about exactly this, and I guess that over 95% of those I talk to do support China. But on Luzon it's more like 50/50. Many do not like that US is let in for using the military bases, something that many sees as a provocation against China who wanna do more serious trade with the Philippines, even build new class A highways all over the country, making the most modern bridges, both over and under the sea as floating bridges between Leyte and the 1400m deep Surigao Strait, for both cars and train. But China will probably not help the Philippines as long they're housing someone that wanna attack China, something that will cause problem for the Philippines as one of the first!

For example, In November 1901, the Manila correspondent of the Philadelphia Ledger wrote: "The present war is no bloodless, opera bouffe engagement; our men have been relentless, have killed to exterminate men, women, children, prisoners and captives, active insurgents and suspected people from lads of ten up, the idea prevailing that the Filipino as such was little better than a dog...". Then again, America repeats history, and never learns from it. But bear in mind, its the unscrupulous politicians who are always reniging on agreements, and backstabbing. It occured as recently as in Afghanistan with the northern alliance with the Kurds. The shit hits the fan, and we start losing against China. The Philippines didn't want to join any side to begin with. As a nation, i believe that we want to stay neutral as much as possible and to de-escalate a situation as peacefully and as quietly as possible. The problem with China truly escalated when China started harassing our fishermen while in our waters and the chinese coastguard started them away from fishing claiming that "they are in chinese waters". We fought for it in the arbitral tribunal and won against china's 9 dash line claims in the region. But china just straight up ignored our case and are still in the said waters. Our former president even went to china to negotiate 3 times, oust the US army and even willing to buy armaments from China and Russian just for china to acknowledge our efforts. But xi jing ping just keeps ignoring it and his coastguard continue to harass our citizens and even take fish their caught fish. They even ran through a fishing boat and left the filipino fishermen floating at sea, rammed our coastguard and pointed lasers to our coast guard. The chinese ambassador said that "our coastguard are just playing with TOY LASERS!, Grow up PH". What can a poor nation do who has weak defenses physically and cybernetically do to protect it's sovereignty from a big bully tyrant atop the sea? Just stay quiet and silence its citizens? We did everything we can to de-escalate and protect our neutrality but nations cannot take such bullying and not fight back. The welcoming of the US troops back is the last option for the PH to at least help its citizens counter chinese harassment.

lol! Vietnam is one of China's victims of their brutal conquests and atrocities, stop making lies because the world knows all your atrocities, The 1967 mass killing in Dao County, known as the Dao County Massacre, was 66 days of mass destruction in Hunan Province, China, lasting from August 13 to October 17, 1967. It resulted in 4,519 dead, of whom 4,193 were killed outright and 326 were forced to commit suicide., Beginning with the Red August of Beijing, massacres took place nationwide, including the Guangxi Massacre, in which massive cannibalism also occurred; the Inner Mongolia incident; the Guangdong Massacre; the Yunnan Massacres; and the Hunan Massacres. Almost 90,000 people were counted as dead or missing and presumed dead in the final official Chinese government assessment; the officially reported total killed included more than 5,300 children, the bulk of them students attending classes. They were whipping, flogging, hard labour, exile and capital punishment. Death was still the ultimate price to pay, but gone were the cruel and unusual ways to die. However, Mao's government was responsible for vast numbers of deaths, with estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million victims due to starvation, persecution, prison labour, and mass executions, which drew criticism for being considered totalitarian rule. Death toll. The excess mortality associated with the famine has been estimated by former CCP officials and international experts, with most giving a number in the range of 15-55 million deaths. What was the deadliest famine in history? Great Leap Forward The 'Great Leap Forward'-famine in China from 1959-61 was the single largest famine in history in terms of absolute numbers of deaths. Excess mortality estimates vary hugely, but based on our midpoint estimates, it cost more than double the number of lives than any other famine.

This video is so subjective. It is eschewed in showing dissent against American presence in the Philippines. You do not have to be a masters degree holder to understand who is the bigger threat in the region. You may argue all you want and interview all the leftists in the Philippines but the fact remains China has been more agressive, coercive, draconian in its actions in the region.Tibet, Xinjiang and Hong Kong are perfect examples. Who is the biggest imperialist in the world, Its not the US. Islamic Imperialism has conquered more territories than any sovereign state in the 20th century.

The US has a lot of business interests in the Philippines and it enforces it with cultural supremacy over the whole country particularly the cities. China is trying to undermine that and make the Philippines part of its sphere of influence and this is why the clashes are happening. The Philippines on the other hand has enacted an unwritten policy of PLAY THEM BOTH which is basically selling itself to the highest bidder and hopefully both sides will try to woo it for every cent. Now what to do with that money after is entirely an internal affair and as of right now will probably be handed out to the ruling cliques in the senate and congress and the current oligarchs on power.

Pure fiction. US has more business interests in China than the whole of the Philippines. The only major interest for the Americans in the Philippines right now is its geopolitical ambition to contain China. China is undermining nothing, except the US's absolute hegemonic status in the minds of the Americans. Duterte administration was smart enough to balance US hegemonic demands by trading and deepening ties with China. Cannot say the same about current administration.

I might humbly add another viewpoint to this conversation. The US, with its many, many faults oversaw a global order established after WWII that has led to historic economic growth in nearly every region of the world. Who's military do you think patrols the shipping lanes worldwide that allowed global free trade to be established? Who do you think created an international system that prevents invasion of sovereign nations without severe consequences? Yes, the US has a few times unforgivably broken its own rules (i.e. Iraq), and failed to live up to its ideals, but overall, the last 80 years have by far been the most peaceful of any time in recorded history. It just doesn't seem like it because modern media broadcasts every conflict. China has not had the capacity up to this point to engage in large scale war, but they are rapidly expanding their military for a reason. And if you don't think China wants to exploit other sovereign states, you should take a look at what it's doing in Africa right now. The US is by no means perfect, and has many growing problems, but is there a better alternative? Would you prefer a world dominated by China? There always has been and always will be a dominate power, and I would argue the world would be a much darker, more oppressed, racist, and less-free place if Communist China were to be that power, rather than the US. Chinese citizens, by the way, couldn't even have this debate, because any criticism of their government is severely punished. Thanks for listening and opening my mind to your perspective. Shoutout to my Filipino buddies! (there's a large community in my hometown of Las Vegas).

Filipino-American here. I’m find the opinions of all the interviewees interesting. Yes, the U.S. colonized the Philippines, but it eventually game the Filipinos their independence. On another note, which I didn’t hear discussed… it’s not like the U.S. has never helped the Philippines militarily. My grandmother was in her 20’s during WWII and witnessed the hell enacted by the Japanese at that time. The U.S. did their best to help the Filipinos at that time. Obviously the U.S. was also fighting for its self interest at the time (they needed to systematically remove the Japanese from basically every island it captured at that time in order to win the war), but it’s not like the U.S. didn’t help the Philippines. A lot of U.S. aid paid for the reconstruction of the Philippines after that war. This of course is all history, but if we’re for going to talk about the bad things the U.S. did, we should also remember some of the good as well. Mabuhay!

I think what we Filipinos need to accept and understand is that either ways there is no safe zone for us between the two Behemoths. There shouldn't be an option in the first place. Either way we will be endangered if one of the two big country decides to exert their power towards us. For me the best approach is to see the present situation of each country in terms of leadership, action towards other foreign countries, and lastly if they are following through actions. Historical evidences shouldn't even be a basis that's like saying we shouldn't trust Mongolia for having Genghis Khan as their ancestor, or Rome because of Julius Ceasar or Germans for having Adolf Hitler. Each era have different circumstances, have different sets of world leader and different world order and the now is no more than different. The real threat is an evil person to hold that kind of power sooner or later. We all just want a safer and peaceful world.

Russia has fallen on hard times, and it's risky to be friends with the United States. In Central and South American countries, there's a saying "Too far from heaven, too close to the United States." @@quazars236 That is the problem with most of our "KABABAYAN" most have limited resources but there are still a few like us that knows better. It is a no brainer that the EDCA sites will add to the national security of the country. Knowing what China is doing encroaching on our territory. I am not a pro-BBM but I like what he is doing with EDCA. I was a pro-Duterte before but he turned out to be siding with China regardless of the bullying tactics and territorial grab which continued during his administration. Unlike Taiwan, the Phil is very easy to conquer because we do not have the capability to defend the country against China. Only the strongest military power (US) is stopping China from being more aggressive to their neighbors like Putin in Europe. Our military will be glad to fight side by side with US Forces should it become necessary just like in WWII. I will be glad to discuss with you anything pertaining to this matter. The United States is a staunch ally of the Philippines and has consistently demonstrated a commitment to its security and stability. Through joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and defense partnerships, the United States has helped to deter potential threats and maintain peace in the region. The United States has a long-standing tradition of supporting democratic values and human rights, which aligns with the aspirations of the Filipino people. The free market structure in the United States enables economic freedom, entrepreneurship, and innovation, promoting individual liberty and prosperity. China's Communist Party-led government operates under a different political system that limits individual freedoms, curtails freedom of expression, and restricts access to information. This raises concerns about the potential erosion of liberties in countries that come under Chinese influence. From a geopolitical perspective, China's assertive actions in the South China Sea have caused tensions in the region. The United States, through its presence and commitment to freedom of navigation operations, has been seen as a stabilizing force, working to maintain the status quo and ensuring the freedom of international waters.

00:14 I am Japanese. I find the statement that the US is the number one imperialist in the world to be rather interesting. It's true in that it's the number one imperialist nation that still has the military might to do so but Spain (a country that held control over the Philippines along with many other European nations were quite adept at Imperialism/colonialism). Also the Philippines were signed over from Spain to the US. The number one imperial nation only fought off Japan but also then let the Philippines become their own nation (rightfully so). But...I mean they didn't have to. That's literally the opposite of what an imperial nation should have done. As for the 1899 to 1902 war- It also glosses over the fact that the Philippines were part of Spain prior to the US taking over. That's not to diminish the fact that they should be their own country but there is also the fact that it lead to the official formation and recognition of the Philippines as their own nation. Why? Because if Spain were still in control when WW2 broke out they would not have been able to take back the country from Japan and the Philippines most likely exist under Japanese rule today.

China of course, look at Hongkong, Taiwan, and old Chinese colonized people like Xinjiang, Mongol, Tibet, they have no freedom. The US colonized us but freed us, China does not give much freedom to its colonists. We had war with the US but the US also helped us against the Japanese. US colonization is in the past but Chinese colonization is definitely in the present. We have more than 4million Filipinoes and US citizens in the US we have just thousands just above 12k+ in Mainland China, and its highly unlikely to be a citizen of China. Sure we have a long tradition of trade with China and the Chinese, but the CCP destroyed their 4 olds, the current one way trade of made in China goods was made possible when they opened up, with western capital. But it came at a cost for us, I still recall going to china to help setup manufacturing plant for a Japanese company that has been operating in our local Export Processing Zone, they later closed some of the local manufacturing plants, and many Filipinoes who train the chinese lost their jobs. China is also chainging back to the Mao era communist style. In China the CCP has a representative in any company and could take over that company when at a whim. There is no property ownership in China the CCP owns everything. In other words, I would not want to be under the CCP.

Many people had said it before, the only sensible way to have a real say in this is that all ASEAN countries must deal with this issue together with one singular outward posture. The only way a small country like the Philippines or Laos to actually seen as equal for US and China rather than puppets are to go together with the rest of ASEAN, bilaterally. Again only in this issue and posture if not policies. Looking at how the US looks at China, it seems to be both the Republican n Democrat are quite bipartisan for this issue, this tension could go on for many years. Even if, just like the OG cold war, war never actually arrived, for as long as the tension exist, no just and significant trade could happened between the region and the two powers. Look at Indonesia (and Malaysia to some extent), it plays in the ambiguity of power. Yes its better than the confusing inferior posture of Duterte and BBM, but they couldn't sustain this ambiguity if they are by themselves. The same thing applies to the hard-headedness of Vietnam, it wont be sustainable if they're the only one doing it. I'm not sure how, but surely Duterte's sinolicking and Marcos's 'yes, uncle Sam' is might be even worse than an almost failed state like Myanmar.

Sorry but this isn't realistic at all, most ASEAN countries are developing countires and are more focus with their economy than to join in the dispute, some countries are just neutral and other just don't care.
