The US did not "win" the war against the Spaniards in the Philippines; for years, Philippine natives (not yet called 'Filipinos') fought the Spaniards in a war that culminated in the retreat of what was left of Spanish forces to the edge of Manila Bay. Well, of course the Philippines has interests in its region: doesn't any homeowner have an interest in their own home? I disliked that they only showed the views of fishermen in Cagayan, which rarely encounter the harassment of Chinese Coast Guard. Now, talk with the fishermen in Zambales, Palawan, and those fishing within the West Philippine Sea and you will get a totally different view. But yeah, the Philippine government should tread carefully, strictly implementing the contents of EDCA that those US bases will not have the capacity to be forward bases in case of conflict rises in Taiwan.

if Philippine sign the COC, those fisherman wouldn't be harass. furthermore it is not like philippine coast guard isn't harassing another fisherman. the only death of fisherman caused by coast guard operation was the death of a taiwan fisherman at the hand of the philippine coast guard. taiwan literally deployed their entire navy for "exercise" to make a point to philippines... my view on SCS is very simple, we should use it as an opportunity to create an Asian Maritime Union between ASEAN and China/Taiwan. the EU share it sea among it memberstates, this serve 2 purpose: 1st is the fisherman can all fish in peace side by side, if ownership doesn't matter, then there won't be conflict. 2nd is fish don't respect borders, if you divide up the SCS, what going to happen is overfishing in one country will affect the neighbouring country, and the fear of losing out would cause fisherman in between countries to race to the bottom and try and out catch each other, that would devaste the seas, so we have to have a single fishery body to govern the entire sea to which all fisherman in all countries need to respect. as for the military base, if the US want to attack what can Philippine do? bomb the US bases? puting US base in Philippine is the same as Ukraine allowing Russia to put bases in Crimea before 2014... once there is a crisis, what is that piece of paper Ukraine have going to do against the Russia troop flooding out of the base and taking control of the surrounding? those bases were a mistake but there is nothing Philippine can do about it now... best it can do is tell China that if US use those base, China can bomb those bases back. Philippine will not protect those bases... if EU can prevent another war between bitter rivals like Germany and France and turn them into best partners, why can't we create an AU with China? we can even expand to include India, Japan and 2 Koreas in the same way... we in Asia need to think out of the box US has place us in by telling us we are too weak so we must fight, that is the dumbest strategy ever.

China had always been a country for 5000 years, being ruled by different dynasties and was conquered by Khan for a short 100years. British NEVER ruled China, it was a defeat of the Chinese army which caused the Opium wars and ceding some territoritories but never the whole china. Neither did Japan ruled China. Japan only occupied parts of China, NOT the whole china during WW2. As said, Modern China began since 1912 (ROC) and transist to PRC 1949 (after the KMT and communist civil war) and Philippines only really became independent in 1946. Not forgetting Zheng He said the South China seas and sailed as far as Africa way before any Asian countries sailed.

The average FIlipino citizen is significantly better than its status two decades ago, poverty rates went from above 40% to 16%, GDP per Capita went from 1000 USD in 2001 to now around 4k USD, and is expected to grow greater. As the economy rises, people's live become better, we have more resources now for our defense compared to years ago. 10 years ago, we couldn't bother start procurring tanks, attack helicopters, now, we have been procurring advanced weaponries, such as Supersonic Missiles, SHORADS, Light Tanks, Attack Helicopters and and so on. A majority of Filipinos prefer the strengthening of military ties with the US. While the concerns of the those against it are valid, the benefits of having the US here outweigh the risk of being weak and defenseless. China's aggression will persist whether or not the Philippines prepares for conflict, and their actions in the West Philippine Sea while a very pro-China president was in power is proof of that. China only respects force and abuse weakness, and so peace cannot be maintained without that show of force.

If a war breaks out between nuclear powers, I'd say there is a very good chance that all involved nations (and those downwind of any nuclear strikes) are on the losing side. If no nuclear weapons are used, than all the participants and those who depend on them or operate in the same area in which the combat operations are conducted stand to lose a great deal. Ultimately, it might be that the only winners are those outside the combat areas who might benefit through trade after the end of the conflict.

China has a strict "no first strike" policy so a us-china nuclear war is unlikely. However, it would increase exponentially if Russia intervened in response to the US sending troops. However, one thing is for sure: A US-China war would drag the global economy down into the depths of crisis even worse than the Great Depression. Both the Chinese and US mainlands would be attacked, primarily Eastern China and the West Coast US while the damage to both the economies and militaries of everyone involved would take years, if not decades to fully recover from.

Look at Chernobyl and the impact that had globally as a study case and combine it with the eruption of Krakatoa. If it's limited to tactical nuclear devices (kilotons vs. megatons yield) it will be very damaging to nearby and involved nations. If it involves strategic weapons than it will probably impact the majority of the world's nations.

I disagree, I think it would be a regional war in the South China Sea. Once the nations start hitting each other’s territory then nuclear weapons become a lot more feasible. I think it’s entirely possible we’ll see some attacks on military installations on Chinas mainland and on U.S bases all around the pacific, including Hawaii. However, WW2/Iraq war style bombing campaigns will likely be an escalation that both nations will want to avoid.

The Philippines was an American territory in WW2, it was essentially the big battle ground between the Japanese and Americans. The Battle of Leyte Gulf is the largest Naval battle in history. The Japanese conquest of the Philippines is the greatest defeat in American history. Manila was the 2nd most destroyed city after Warsaw which was fought over by the Germany and Soviet Union. Before WW2, Manila was the Pearl of the Orient, the Venice of the East. I'm not so keen on history repeating itself.

Kicking the US out might be a solution for the short term to avert war in the Philippines but then we will have to live with being surrounded by China. They will take over all the South China Sea, and Taiwan, probably take our northern islands, probably take the Southern Japanese Islands. And then dominate the Pacific ocean.
