As tensions have been escalating between the U.S. and China, the Philippines announced it will allow American troops more access to military bases in the country. But what’s at stake for this island nation, which was once a U.S. colony, if the two superpowers go to war?
Dena Takruri travels to the Philippines to watch the annual combined military exercise held by American and Philippine troops, and hears from Filipinos who oppose a bigger U.S. military footprint in their country.

I'm sorry but unless China and America share a border you will not see a military conflict. Even Taiwan has 100 miles of open ocean that's insanely hard to start a war and land men on their shores. This fight has and mostly been economic. You need to look at the Supply Chains and Logistics not military action.

The US did not "win" the war against the Spaniards in the Philippines; for years, Philippine natives (not yet called 'Filipinos') fought the Spaniards in a war that culminated in the retreat of what was left of Spanish forces to the edge of Manila Bay. The Spanish millitary was effectively neutralized by then. It was at that point that the US arrived, and the Filipinos, realizing they could not defeat both Spain and a rising United States, made an agreement to join forces with the Americans. But Spain and the US had other plans; Spain did not want to surrender to their former colonial subjects, and the US did not want to appear that it was conquering another country. So, Spain and the US staged a mock battle that the US navy 'won' so that Spain could surrender 'honorably' to a wh*t$ nation. The Philippine peoples felt justifiably betrayed and fought back. Thus commenced a long, bloody war which claimed the lives of 250,000 Filipinos and several thousand Americans. Why did the US conquer the Philippines, betraying its own treasured principles of freedom, democracy, and self-government? To get access to the riches of Asia. Just as they do now. General Gibson (interviewed in the video) said as much, saying the US has its interests in the region just as the Philippines does. Well, of course the Philippines has interests in its region: doesn't any homeowner have an interest in their own home? And if you travel across the country and pretend to have an interest in my house and neighborhood, I should be a little suspicious.

I think the view of the elderly Filipinos is correct. The United States only views the Philippines as a tool to contain China, not an ally. Every time a unilateral conflict intensifies, it is accompanied by an increase in China's level of control over the South China Sea. And what is truly affected is not the politicians and corrupt military of the United States and the Philippines, but the fishermen of the Philippines who are truly affected by the tense situation. At the same time, the United States has achieved the goal of undermining the unity of Asian countries.

Before 2016, Filipino fishermen could fish on Scarborough Shoal, but politicians encouraged populism for their own elections and made irrational actions in the South China Sea with the support of the United States. So who truly benefits? So the winner can be China, as China has strengthened its actual control over the South China Sea; The winner can be the United States, because Secession in the United States has split Asian countries; Politicians can win because they have received votes; Only the Filipino people lost.

I disliked that they only showed the views of fishermen in Cagayan, which rarely encounter the harassment of Chinese Coast Guard. Now, talk with the fishermen in Zambales, Palawan, and those fishing within the West Philippine Sea and you will get a totally different view. But yeah, the Philippine government should tread carefully, strictly implementing the contents of EDCA that those US bases will not have the capacity to be forward bases in case of conflict rises in Taiwan.

if Philippine sign the COC, those fisherman wouldn't be harass. furthermore it is not like philippine coast guard isn't harassing another fisherman. the only death of fisherman caused by coast guard operation was the death of a taiwan fisherman at the hand of the philippine coast guard. taiwan literally deployed their entire navy for "exercise" to make a point to philippines... my view on SCS is very simple, we should use it as an opportunity to create an Asian Maritime Union between ASEAN and China/Taiwan. the EU share it sea among it memberstates, this serve 2 purpose: 1st is the fisherman can all fish in peace side by side, if ownership doesn't matter, then there won't be conflict. 2nd is fish don't respect borders, if you divide up the SCS, what going to happen is overfishing in one country will affect the neighbouring country, and the fear of losing out would cause fisherman in between countries to race to the bottom and try and out catch each other, that would devaste the seas, so we have to have a single fishery body to govern the entire sea to which all fisherman in all countries need to respect. as for the military base, if the US want to attack what can Philippine do? bomb the US bases? puting US base in Philippine is the same as Ukraine allowing Russia to put bases in Crimea before 2014... once there is a crisis, what is that piece of paper Ukraine have going to do against the Russia troop flooding out of the base and taking control of the surrounding? those bases were a mistake but there is nothing Philippine can do about it now... best it can do is tell China that if US use those base, China can bomb those bases back. Philippine will not protect those bases... if EU can prevent another war between bitter rivals like Germany and France and turn them into best partners, why can't we create an AU with China? we can even expand to include India, Japan and 2 Koreas in the same way... we in Asia need to think out of the box US has place us in by telling us we are too weak so we must fight, that is the dumbest strategy ever.

@@lagrangewei You make it sound like it needs to escalate to death before we can treat Chinese Coast Guard activities as a threat. The non-binding non-existing Code of Conduct between China and ASEAN stressed the already existing maritime conduct, with the addition of China's blatant ADIZ claim overlapping Philippine's, and a series of terms restricting ASEAN countries on how to develop the overlapping region. Your analogy in Crimea doesn't exactly fit since it was only possible for Russians to stormed that place due to proximity of the two countries. But I get the point, albeit the US can still deploy their troops in Japan, SoKor, and Guam if the Philippines insist to block any involvement of EDCA bases in the country.

Then the last woman she questioned saying "get off our women" and asserting that it is a lie that the US military was invited. She didn't have to back up any of her ridiculous claims. She must be mad because an American never wanted her. There are far more Filipinos in the US than there are Americans in the Philippines. They're not treated as foreigners. I understand the sentiments of the people who do not want the US in the Philippines, however valid their concerns are, they do not provide solutions to resolve the issues in the South China Sea. It would be ideal that the Philippines would not need to depend on the US to defend our borders and sovereignty but we are from that reality. I think at the moment, the pros outweigh the cons. If the naysayers can provide a better solution than complain and protest, I'd be all ears...

It's almost funny that a country that stole the independence of the Filipinos and colonized their country now purports to be championing Philippine freedom and democracy and protecting them from China---a country that never invaded them in 2,000 years of contact and trade. There is a copperplate inscription unearthed by a Dutch archeologist that dates from 900 AD that affirms the friendship of the peoples and tribes of what is now the Philippines and the kingdom of China. When the Spaniards arrived to conquer the Philippines in the 1500s, they encountered many Chinese fishermen, merchants and officials...but no soldiers. Like the governor said, most major towns have large Chinese populations. The culture and society of China and the Philippine islands have been intertwined, peacefully, for millenia.

That said, it wouldn’t be Americans who die and if any of these countries are found to have oil in the process they’d get extra protecting and serving in the sense that the us would probably just take over and kill most of the people there, like how they protected the Middle East. I've been overseas to these places. The enviromental impact is no more than domestic airports in America. Phillipines has a short memory. We took back the phillipines back from the Japanese Empire. If you think that's bad, a Chinese Empire will occupy more land with more soldiers with less money for filipinos. I wish the best for the phillipines, but you don't know the plans of the big dragon. US civilians want another eye in that part of the world, so US forces don't have to project on empirical forces. Nope, McArthur left PH at the height of the war Bringing with them their guns and ammunition. When the guerilla played the game of attrition against the Japanese, we were able to push them ftom mainland to the shore. Then the US came when the Japanese are already weak and less support from Japan.

10 years ago, we couldn't bother start procurring tanks, attack helicopters, now, we have been procurring advanced weaponries, such as Supersonic Missiles, SHORADS, Light Tanks, Attack Helicopters and and so on. The real reason of military underinvestment because the economy didn't start to blossom in the 2000s as it is now in the current era. Country's GDP went from 78 Billion USD in 2001 to now 400+ USD Billion, meaning more resources. As the economy continue to develop, expect more resources, and more military expansion.

Yes, both sides were shown but.. count the airtime. The protesters are the puppets of communist China. They are silent during the many years of Chinese bullying in the PH seas. It is not the simple majority of Filipinos are for EDCA. The VAST majority of Filipinos are for the support of USA. Journalism should rely heavily on facts and FIGURES. If the super majority of the Filipinos are for EDCA, then the airtime should follow and not the opposite.

Please note both ROC and PRC claim sovereignty of all China. An objective report would mention this basic fact. "Taiwan" is an island, not a country. It is not "independently" ruled, the ROC government is seated there while the PRC government is seated in Beijing, while both claim to be the legitimate governments of all China. Actually, the ROC claims greater territory.

China and the United States are at war, and it is unknown who wins or loses. However, one thing is certain: the United States' world hegemonic position will definitely disappear. China only needs to focus on cracking down on the US core manufacturing industry, destroying the US financial center, and doing its utmost to kill the existing military forces of the US military. As long as the United States cannot recover to the current level within 30 years, the rest will be done by Europe, Russia, Japan, and other countries (these countries will probably watch on during the war, for the simple reason that intervening in the Sino US conflict will become cannon fodder, watching the battle between the two strong countries, and picking the fruits after the war is in their best interests). Regardless of the final outcome, the United States will definitely become a second-rate country, and China will suffer significant losses. However, with the stronger reconstruction ability of the Chinese people than rabbits, China can at least recover to the level of 2010 in the next 20 years. The premise is that without the use of nuclear weapons, the world pattern will be comprehensively changed.
