The solution to this issue is to recognize the difference between spritual "Amrit" and temporal "Khande Di Phaul". Someone who has truly received "Amrit", by definition, cannot be bad. Can anyone honestly say that a corrupt person like Badal received "Amrit" as per Gurbani? Of course not! Thus, the only logical consequence is that the "Bad" person never received "Amrit" in the first place. If being "Amritdhari" was as easy as attending a Khande Di Phaul ceremony, then anyone could just do it, but the truth is that in Gurbani, "Amrit" is not defined as a literal drink, but rather something that is within you, that is sprituality infinite and is like a well that you must dig within yourself using the tools that the Guru has given (Simran, Seva, Vichar, etc). Furthermore, "Amrit" is timeless, and not restricted by time or culture, otherwise that means any Sikhs, along with the Bhagats, didn't any any Amrit and were thus not spiritually liberated. This would turn Sikhi into some exclusive club similar to the Abrahamic faiths. Now just because Amrit isn't automatically derived from Khande Di Phaul doesn't mean that Khande Di Phaul should be abandoned. In the age we live in, it's very important because atemporal commitment is a reflection of an internal commitment. The Khande Di Phaul is like the external flower bloom of a plant. The external flower bloom is caused by the internal function of the plant, but they both have their own functions and come hand in hand.

Thank you for this conversation. I haven’t taken Amrit and tbh I don’t have any intention to as of yet, but I REALLY enjoy reading Gurbani, Naam Japna, and learning more on Sikhism. I pretty much remember Waheguru in everything I do and I’ve been becoming more “in love” with God as I read and understand more Bani. I’m born into a Sikh family, but never really know what to call myself. I WANT to say I’m a Sikh but I don’t want anyone coming for me saying I’m not Amritdhari, I don’t have the right to say that. I wish the community didn’t alienate us so much or judge us for not being ready. I want to make that promise when I’m ready to uphold every value of it. When people make comments or consider you not Sikh, it just pushes people away further because they feel “why bother, I wont ever be good enough” I enjoy your videos, how you explain everything without being condescending and do so in a way that doesn’t alienate us non-Amritdhari folks. It keeps me motivated to keep learning and make progress towards being the Sikh our Gurus guided us to be.

If someone feels they are not good, they ought not to leave the panth, but seek guidance from those who have more knowledge. It's like telling a student if you ain't good in class leave the school.....NO. Such a student needs extra coaching and better understanding.

@@xs4567 I understand. It does help deliver the message, I agree. My comment was a bit poor. Some instrumental raag kirtan perhaps, or mellow simran would feel (to me) more appropriate though... Maybe lofi-hiphop music (which is what this computerised background music is called) breaks some borders of culture, and makes people stay and listen to the katha, thats good.. But the point was just, dont loose the gurbani, further... dhrupad and traditional string instruments of the gurus being already of the past. In order to unite with God, you cannot just do good (it will help) , but you need conquer your mind, conquer the desires, conquer your ego, conquer the urge to look fashionable and impress people. Doing Good will help get you closer to God but not unite you with God .(That's my opinion based on my little knowledge of different religions.)

Veer Ji. I am currently an international student studying Finance in Canada. Because of the circumstances, studying and working part-time at the Gas station my sikhi is affecting. Veer Ji with the Guru's Kirpa I took Amrit before coming to Canada. Before taking Amrit I made a daily routine of doing 5 banis in the morning, rehras sahib in the evening and Sohila Sahib before night sleep but after taking Amrit and when I reach here in Canada my schedule of doing paath was greatly affected. We have to work to cover our fees which is nearly 5 times as compared to canadian students. We don't have time. Even I also starting to wear dumalla which I started in Canada. But now i am not able to do paath regularly. Am I a bad amritdhari ? because even bad habits have started affecting me like I wake nearly 10 am and afterwards i start feeling negative whole day that I didn't do paath and my whole day spends on my bed just surfing internet and there are lot of other problems. Am i turning a bad amritdhari ?
@TheTurbanatore4 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't consider you a "bad" Amritdhari, because at least you have the humility to acknowledge your faults. We are all just learner's on this path, and making mistakes is normal, but the main thing is that we work to improve on them. I think that if you don't have the time to literally sit down and read paath, at least listen to the Nitnem using earphones or something, because it's at least better than nothing. If you listen to all 5 Nitnem Banis + Rehras, + Sohila, it will only take about an hour, which is split 40 min in the day, 15 in the evening, and 5 at night time. It's very much manageable.

I think the reason why the Bad Amritdhari (oxymoron) was placed higher on the tier list was because at least the Bad Amritdhari can legally be held accountable and officially disciplined under Sikh Law, such as being called to the Akal Takth or reprimanded by the Panj Pyare. On the other hand, your average bad non Amritdhari is completely unaccountable.

The Turbanator suppose the Akal Takhat is in control of “Bad Amritdhari(s)” who want to punish “Good Amritdharis(s) who question the establishment, where does that take us? i believe this misses the point of sikhi - who are we to say what is good and what is bad? hukam is hukam, i dont believe we should try to compare - especially if we believe we are all truly one
@TheTurbanatore4 жыл бұрын
You are creating a false equivalence between Hukam on an "absolute" level, and Hukam on a "relative" level. On an absolute level, of course everything is in Hukam, as everything is Vaheguru because of the non duality principal. However, on a relative level "Good" and "Bad" are things that take us closer or further from duality/ego. The mind operates with the free assumption that it exists. Sikhi is not a personal system, but rather a complete system that is intertwined in both spirituality and the temporal world. Depending on the circumstances, we are justified in identifying behavior as good and bad. Otherwise it would create a cultural relativist contacts where we can't denounce or promote anything. There is a certain criteria/methodology when it comes to evaluating others, and the idea that we can't/shouldn't judge others might sound nice in terms of not bullying people, but it also stops us from calling out degenerative behavior. I think there needs to be a ballenced approach, and don't think Jagraj Singh made any unnecessary statements.
@XXBearXJewXx4 жыл бұрын
@@TheTurbanatore identifying behaviour as good or bad and then identifying yourself as either good or bad due to that behaviour inherently takes you closer to duality and ego. The reality is that we are all programmed to behave the way we do. Any feeling that we have of control, or free will, is, in my opinion, delusion.
@TheTurbanatore4 жыл бұрын
@@XXBearXJewXx 1. There are ways of identify Good/Bad behavior in relation to oneself without getting egotistical. In the video, Jagraj Singh showed one such case, as an Amritdhari is one who has given their head to the Guru, thus any good deeds are of the Guru, not their own. This acts as a humbling mechanism. 2. From a Pragmatic perspective there still needs to be lines drawn. Otherwise, it calls into question if we should even punish a thief/rapist for their crime if it's just in their nature and can't be controlled. 3. The purely deterministic outlook on Sikhi isn't that clear cut, and there does seem to be some leeway. Otherwise things such as Ardas would be pointless if they never had any external affect, as history shows us.
@XXBearXJewXx4 жыл бұрын
@@TheTurbanatore so good deeds are of the guru, but bad deeds are ours? Why? There are plenty of passages in Gurbani that talk about free will I.e. "I am not good, no one is bad", or various analogies to god being a sort of puppeteer, rendering us powerless. Also, I would contest that ardaas doesnt have any impact in creating a desired outcome (back to good vs bad, again). It can, however, adjust the attitudes of those involved, provide inspiration and be a tool for action. The thief or rapist should be punished but not condemned. They should be punished because they are a danger to society and how we function; they are no more responsible for their crimes as an individual is responsible for getting cancer, or getting a brain injury that causes them to, for example, rape or steal.
