@@larryross9492he’s a natural baritone, with a crazy range, just like Matt is a baritone with a great range, he obviously sings lower more consistently so bass makes sense for him. Heck even Avi as a bass profundo had a crazy range and the rest of them do as well. That’s part of their magic.

Matt is a base, not baritone , but does have a crazy range from years of training. There is a great interview on Peter Barber’s channel, if you’re curious.

There is a segment of the pop music industry that agrees with your "not dark enough" comment. You'll find reviews online that call them "irritating", "embarrassing" and "earnest". But in this case, the song is not being sung by the Grinch. It's the narrator, who as far as I know isn't evil.
@suebob167 ай бұрын
I agree that it is the "narrator" of the story that is singing this song, not the Grinch. Actor Thurl Ravenscroft was the original bass singing voice of this song in the cartoon (he was also the voice of Tony the Tiger in the Kellogg's Frosted Flakes commercials). Obviously Matt was chosen as the lead to simulate Ravenscroft's voice and delivery but he also brings his own talent and energy to it. Matt does a great job here.

But remember - in the end, the Grinch is redeemed - and this is more in line with the TV movies - It's too much fun. Matt was perfect.

Just a question. Why woud someone who is singing TO The Grinch sound LIKE The Grinch? The singer is the good guy or at least a critic in this scenario. That only makes sense in the Jim Carey version where he sings it to himself. In the original version it was sung by The Narrator who admittedly had a deep voice.
@suebob167 ай бұрын
It was actor Boris Karloff who was the narrator, and he does have a deep speaking voice. Thurl Ravenscroft (a bass) was the singing voice. I'm guessing his deep vocals were used to continue the tone that Karloff brought to his narration.

I’ve seen this live twice. The first was like this, but this year they came in with it after the intermission, and Matt comes out of the darkness alone with creepy music and a lot of ad lib vocalizations. If you can find a live recording from “Pentatonix: The Most Wonderful Tour of the Year 2023” I think you’ll find the mood more to your liking.

It was very true to the original. I’m a fan of this upbeat, jazzy version. Matt has the perfect narrator voice here. I think they have fun with most of their songs. See “Making Christmas” for evil PTX. And even then it’s hard to make Kevin and Matt look evil. Ps. You don’t have to apologize for not liking a song. This isn’t a cult lol. We’ll let you know what we like about it, we may act incredulous, but PTX fans are in general very nice, albeit passionate people. Happy Holidays from Pennsylvania 🎄⛄️🎅🏻🧑🏻🎄❄️🎁🌨️🎄

I have always heard dump-heap. This original version was sung on a children's TV special in 1966, so I don't think there is any way they would have allowed "dung". However, Pentatonix does often clean up lyrics in respect to Kevin and Matt's beliefs. They often substitute "Mitch" for "b---h".
@katmit69 Жыл бұрын
Scott does the backup Bass, he's a Baritone. Mitch is a Counter Tenor, Matt is the Bass, and Kirstie is an Alto Soprano. Kevin is just everything beatboxer extraordinaire. This is not my favorite song, they have fun with it. I wouldn't bother listening to any other versions, because I just don't like the song, but as a Pentaholic you don't just ignore their songs. Not everyone will like every song or the way it's done, opinions are a real thing. lol

Who sings You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch the best? PTX? VoicePlay? None. The best is the original singer Thurl Ravenscroft (also known for Tony the Tiger, several records, voices in Disney movies, and Disneyland/Disney World atrractions), but then, i guess i'm partial to him because he's my great-uncle! Others do a good job, but my mind only hears Uncle Thurl (even if someone else is singing the song).

💥👉👉Scott is not a tenor he is a baritone with an IMPRESSIVE vocal range. Scott takes over the bass when Avi or Matt has a singing lead. OBVIOUSLY in this song Scott is the bass throughout. Scott can easily hit falsettos and is known as the king of riffs and runs. Plus he's extremely soulful. I agree with others that this version is truer to the original, I'm not a fan of vp and hf but I'm here for ALL Your PTX reactions 😅👍

And Thurl Ravenscroft original lyrics was dump heap. So they didn't change the original word.
@hapymom13 Жыл бұрын
So...its not the first time they have changed lyrics. They do it really for 2 main reasons and maybe smaller reasons: 1) KO is very dedicated to his faith and their are just some words and phrases he cannot bring himself to say 2) sometimes a simple word change can fit the mouth and music better, a word singing can sometimes be heard differently than spoken (similar situation "atten-hut" instead of "attention" bc the former has a more gruff vocal while the latter ends in a soft sound that can be missed

My grandkids and I just rewatched the Grinch the other night. I have to say I like the cleaner version PTX sings. I don’t like dirty, greasy, nasty, and gross. I don’t think Matt was being the nasty Grinch. He was singing about him. I guess he’s just too nice to sing mean. I’m wondering if this was a contest for best singing or best performance. Would that make a difference? I haven’t heard the other performances so I can’t pick who I like best. I probably couldn’t pick anyway if Home Free or VoicePlay is in the running. They are all different and I love the same songs sang in a different way. I can tell you that I prefer this version to the one sang in the movie. I don’t know if Jim Carey sang that or not but if so I think he should stick to acting. Great reaction guys. It’s fun watching you squabbling.

When will you learn that there is no The in Pentatonix? (You seemed to be expecting some comment/criticism). Actually I can't see any point trying to find the "best" version of a song: it's dependent on your mood at the time, whether the sun is shining, the quality of your last coffee, whether you've heard that version before, etc. Not that it makes your reaction any less enjoyable.
