XR space is a new frontier that offers many possibilities and challenges. I have been working as a XR designer and developer for two years, but I still feel like I have a lot to learn and share in this field. thank you for your advice!👍 I had a general idea of what skillset I should have as an XR designer, but after the video, I see more clear steps what I should master first. With a UX design background and some knowledge in 3D and AR it's not too far 😁(haha but we all know the more you learn the more you realize how far you are...)

I had to learn the hard way that certificates don't mean anything in hiring. I justified it to myself that I wanted to start niching back down my skillset because my job starting making me too much of a generalist, that if it led to a new job it would pay for itself (every job I applied to last winter disappeared from lay-offs), etc. But the bottom line is, as Daniel says, it doesn't matter. Yes, you can learn a lot from these courses but most of the time you could have gotten that knowledge/help somewhere else for a lot less. For example, if you want to do your own projects and follow tutorials, but still want a professional to help guide you, I PROMISE you that whatever consulting fee you'd pay a mentor like that would go much further than any course, cost less, and benefit both you and your mentor way more. The main reason I'm currently in the XR Design Fellowship from XR Bootcamp is because my employer decided to pay for it (and the first cohort was on sale). So it's a good excuse for me to do more XR projects at work, but I definitely would not have paid for it myself.

100%. I think with a decent amount of effort you can get the same education for free. I think community is the way to a new job and a new skillset.

8:32 Blender - Unwrap, box model, create materials, manage assets - do we need to get expert at this or basic knowledge is enough? Like i can create basic materials, basic box modelling. What does managing assets mean in blender?

Thank you for this! Im at a crossroads in my career being a designer, editor, 3d modeler, animator, and vfx artist. Ive been thinking of jumping into XR/VR for awhile but the school route wasnt giving me the answers I needed. But I think this video has help guide me in my decision :). Also what would you suggest in VR gear? Oculus Quest 3 or Apple Vision Pro? Or both?

Quest 3 for sure! It’s affordable has great SDK support and supports webxr fully!

This was just what I needed today. Thanks for sharing your insight and tips. As a recent design grad still trying to find my first job in the XR field, it's been overwhelming and daunting realizing just how tough it is to break into the field with minimal experience (even if I have relevant entry level skills). As a result, it has been hindering my motivation, drive and unfortunately creativity. Any suggestions on how to combat those hindrances?

Yes, of course! I discovered a VR experience called Goliath: Playing with Reality a few years back. It's about a man diagnosed with schizophrenia, and the experience aims to make you see and feel what life is like from his perspective. After that, I was all in. One of the wonderful things about VR is that it can evoke empathy and help bring awareness more than any other computational medium (in my opinion). I'm part of the Bezel community. Thank you for sharing. I've talked to a few of XR designers for advice on transitioning to XR from UX. This video really answered a lot of the questions that I haven't been able to get answers on. I've been watching the LinkedIn Job postings since January and haven't seen a lot of postings for XR designer positions in US or Canada. Do you think it might be too early to transition into the industry?

From my perspective the XR industry at the moment is mirroring the mobile industry in 2009. Few jobs, but full of promise. I think the transition atm is a hard one. However, the skills needed for XR design will be quite demanding. So if you start building your skills now you will benefit in the near future.

fyi- my "cube3 "was the first "bezel" founded in 1990... And BTW- nothing changed since then. your advise is the same i gave to thousands over the last decades.

Hi Daniel, Thank you so much for your video; it was exactly what I needed! In 2021, I began my XR design journey, earning certificates along the way. However, working in UX in a corporate setting didn't leave much room for creativity and exploration. This year, I've made the bold decision to leave my corporate job to fully immerse myself in transitioning to XR. Could you recommend companies that offer internships for hands-on experience and mentorship in this field?

oh my I have to learn Blender. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I used to work as XR Designer 2+ years but now it started to be more difficult to find a job, at least it how it feels for me. I feel like XR industry is not developing so fast as it was before, at least in Europe. What country would you recommend for making career in XR?

Me watching this: I pretty much hit everything on this list except Unity and maybe working on a physical medium. But I used to build custom RC cars that I drifted, painted. I love that shit. Now I’m building stuff for my kid to wreck. lol.

They are both amazing tools. One is free and has a very fruitful community. The other is expensive but is a lot more powerful.

You are self taught, I spent 40k Euros to become one and after wasting a year and half post graduation, on looking for jobs. I quit and started my own startup. XR designers definitely don't have any jobs!!

Them jobs exist but they are rare. And honestly I think where you live matters a great deal. This time really reminds me of 2011 for designers.

I'm a newly graduated MSc student in interaction design and I have a question for you: - For the future of XR prototyping (with the advancement of Bezi in the forefront), what need is there to learn heavy-duty programs such as Unity or Unreal in the pursuit of designing interactions, interfaces, and environments for this field? ATM I'm honing my Blender skills to become self-sufficient in creating assets that I use to design interactions and interfaces in Bezi. However, I'm novel in this field and imagine I would need Unity/Unreal skills to overcome future hurdles. However, I'm not sure if the advancement of Bezi and similar CAD tools will make the cumbersome learning of Unity/Unreal redundant for my need - what is your take on this? ps: this is in the shoes of an interaction designer where the UX of the technology is more vital than its pixel-perfect interfaces

It honestly matters what you want to do and what role you are looking for. If you are looking to create complex animations that go into code, ya learn C#, Unity, and/or Ureal. There may be other tools in the future that can handle the complexities of 3D interactions, but its going to be a long haul.

Ummmmm. I think there are a lot of mature SDKs for Unity that help out with the barrier for sure. Dont spend a shit load of money and find something you love to motivate you!
