I’m so stoked to see this game. I can’t play it myself due to laptop issues but this game introduced me to the concept of tulpas and that idea alone invokes in me such a personal and unique type of fear. This game pushes so many buttons for me in an incredibly appealing way. It gets my mind racing not only about the plot, but about tulpas, the discussion around them, and the source of my own visceral reaction to this game and this concept. As an autistic person I am typically troubled by tropes of sociopathy being evidenced by a lack of facial expression. But this game is just too beautiful to look at, the obscured details of the art style can be so menacing yet so nostalgically comforting. Will’s calculating apathy makes the moments of calm seem so mundane that I almost forget about the horrific implications of the story I’ve just seen. the game is so truly compelling I just don’t have it in me to get caught up on my initial perception of an often ableist story trope. especially when it provides for what seems to me, to be a such revolutionary gameplay choice in controlling the PC’s facial expression. I really could go on for a while listing the things I love about this game. I haven’t felt this much aching suspense for a video game in a very, very long time. You’ve shown here a masterful command of narrative tone and I really do commend you for your work. Fantastic stuff

Spoilers for video: Detective Yu is definitely a stand-in for the player, (you). You first "met" Lila on the menus, you're driven by the desire to learn more about her and understand "Who's Lila". We also learn events and things happening in the order Yu does. Also that first ending, I can't believe Manly didn't pick up on, "Dr Hades" but did on the river styx?
@eschcal98392 жыл бұрын
I've seen a ton of River Styx references in games and movies ,and books. The only Dr. Hades I can think of off the top is from Super Robot Wars. By the way, this is a very clever and deep game, refreshing even. But its based on a very specific set of beliefs that others like me in the Western World wouldn't really catch on to. Millenia old beliefs about God, Truth, Reality, Meaning. Its very old philosophy, and like all philosophy it comes down to interpretation. Lila is an actual thing, part of the eternal cycle where The Divine/God becomes The World, and the World returns to the Divine, and where Karma fuels The Lila, the Divine Play. You'll recall the bit about how Lila's father was "here" before ALL "reels". Because Lila is the creation of The Divine, and The World exists as The Divine sacrifices itself and then feeds. We're all shards of The Divine, but our own image of our "self" varies, the worth we put on who we are as individuals. Google "Lila". "Brahmin". ITs all pretty deep and not exactly set in stone.

As someone who's had to study facial expressions to help with descriptive writing, I keep getting so frustrated when a face *almost* right and then he moves something the opposite way it should naturally go. XD There will be tiny differences based on secondary emotions, but it's really amazing to see how hard we have to think about the individual pieces of expression. It all comes so naturally to us, to have to remember whether or not the nostrils flare when scared, or whether the upper teeth or lower teeth get exposed in disgust... it's interesting and shows just how hard it must be for someone who has to think through each expression!

@spaghetto98362 жыл бұрын
It's the opposite for me. I mean, I can make expressions naturally, but I relate to Will in the fact that I _can't fake_ an emotion when I need to. Like laughing along with someone so they don't feel awkward for not being funny, or pretending to have fun with a kid so they won't feel bad, & especially smiling in photos. I can't smile at will for the life of me, unlike other teens who take lovely selfies by just whipping out a Colgate smile... My face is always deadpan. "Huh? Yeah I'm having fun." "Wow." "Hahaha." Like that. But bc I like to people-watch (and also bc I draw sometimes), I learned what each muscle does for each emotion, along with how your tone should go. Which lead me to realise a true smile comes from the eyes. You basically squint the lower eyelids only, and even a tiny tug at each corner of the mouth will seem genuine. I can't always control 'em though, but I'm getting better at it. Seriously, Manly must be more anti-social than me if he can't know basic emotions: *Joy-* As said, lower eyelids pulled up, lip corners pointing upwards or showing upper teeth, may or may not raise eyebrows evenly. *Anger-* Wide eyes, pouted lips or showing bottom teeth with clenched jaw, brows pointing inwards. *Fear-* Wide eyes, mouth agape or with opened jaw, sad brows. *Surprise-* Similar to Fear, but with eyebrows pulled upwards. *Disgust-* Clenched jaw showing bottom teeth, evenly raised or sad brows, eye width depends on how disgusted you are. Tbh I wanna buy this game just to see the emotions I could create. There's so many: the "silently judging you" face, the "WTF", the "shut up shut UP", the speechless happy "rebooting" face, the "You joked about something I'm insecure about that was kinda funny, but also pls stop" glare... They're all universal somehow. I love that.

Maybe it’s Lila who makes Will’s face suddenly change into different expressions. William himself says that he can’t make his own expressions without thinking about it in the beginning of the game. So the sudden expression changes don’t make sense if you leave out the fact that Lila takes control over him intermittently throughout the game. Perhaps fighting against the sudden expression is an example of William fighting against Lila. Just some thoughts

Going off all the Dharmic references, I'd say the name "Lila" is a reference, too: "Within non-dualism, lila is a way of describing all reality, including the cosmos, as the outcome of creative play by the divine absolute (Brahman). In the dualistic schools of Vaishnavism, lila refers to the activities of God and his devotee, as well as the macrocosmic actions of the manifest universe"
@eschcal98392 жыл бұрын
To be specific, Lila is the Divine Play. The Play is fueled by Karma, aka human actions and decision. The Divine sacrificed itself to make The World. And The World returns to the Divine, and the many manifestations of The Divine and Lila are pretty much impossible for us to discern. That is why so much focuses on who and what we all are, what is and isn't real, ect. In the end, you become a willing part of Lila with your sense of "self" and knowledge of Lila intact. Or, you get completely gobbled up by The Divine, just to re-entered The World in one of many near endless forms The Divine ends up taking. EDIT: For instance, a steam engine or boiler monster! lol

this game is amazing and as someone that reads tarot, the cards are definitely an accurate representation to the endings 😭 like wow they really did their big one with this!!!
@hayleye62622 жыл бұрын
This game is exceptional thus far; truly multi-faceted in its presentation, gameplay, and narrative. If I were to venture a premature assessment of the title and its concomitant query, I would say that the question of “who’s Lila” is more metaphysical than literal, which delves into the subject of personal identity and the malleability of self. Thematically, the inability to perceive oneself fully and the transience or adaptability of the ego is represented through Will, a man whose conscious personality changes depending on the situation and who he interacts with. To Will, his tulpa, or independent, sentient identity, is just as conscious and real as Will himself, since the “self” is merely a construct that exists within the mind, incapable of perceiving itself objectively. His tulpa is Lila, who apparently has a predilection for murder, and whose ego is just as capricious, as Lila, too, emotionally manipulates those around them by altering their personality and reactions in accordance with societal norms and expectations. I believe through the course of this game and its endings, we should come to some sort of better understanding as to the distinctive memories and deeper, subconscious personality traits which define Will and Lila. I loved the incorporation of the user interface within the game itself, allowing Yu to essentially represent “You” the player, aware of the branching timelines, and desiring to understand every facet of this narrative and, through this uncovering, also find out more about Will/Lila. It’s an exceptionally creative and unique manner of discussing the endings and meditating on their contribution to the overarching query of what happened to Tanya and who, really, is Lila. I really can’t wait to see the rest of this game and discuss it with everyone! It’s an incredibly fecund story for interpretation, speculation, and even philosophizing, so I truly feel it was made for people like me haha

Nicely written, in my case I am fascinated by how the people around the protagonist don't seem to recognize clear signs of mental illness coming from the protag They speak to him as if he was a normal person and get angry, confused or frustrated at the protag when his mental illness does not allow him to react in a normal way, they even lash out at him sometimes Something that is a real issue for many actual mental illness patients, the lack of education among many people causes them a lot of problems in life, and it is a major cause of why many actual murderers are mentally ill patients Many times no one ever tries to educate them on their own conditions, or the people around them, leaving them to fend for their own, lost and confused in their own minds never knowing why
@nanamama1522 жыл бұрын
If we keep going off Buddhist or Hindu analogies, if Lila is anything, it's probably Mara or one of his daughters, representing unsatiable, destructive desire (Lila does say s/he is hungry and wants to feed) that takes over a person until they're not themselves anymore. Will's name is definitely symbolic, though, considering all this talk about destruction of self. Self. The I. Ego. Will. Geddit?

I think that us, the players, are portrayed by Detective Yu (or perhaps even "You"), who wants to understand every ending and the story behind the character, meanwhile Lila just tells us that none of the endings are the "true" ending, and she (or he) asks us if it even matters in the first place. So yea, this is pretty obvious but I just wanted to point it out. I think the instance with Yu *may or may not be* a place where you can learn more about Lila and the endings, to satisfy your curiosity.

Such a cool idea! Controlling the character's facial expressions as the character tries to express their true emotions. This was implemented so well. Seeing Manly struggle to conceal the true facial expression shows this delightfully Using a map directions app as the map overview UI is clever! The unnerving dialog the MC lets out sometimes is so cake. The effect of always having the MC face onscreen while killing is ridiculously distressing. It reminded me of a horror movie I once heard about, where the entire film was a splitscreen which one side was the killer's POV. Detective Yu portion is just great. So intriguing! I think remember the dev mentioning neural network when commenting about this game. Although it is something I know little about, I wonder if there interesting pathways beyond the base facial expressions and the routes represented in the tarot tree.
