You're absolutely right about them being contemporaries of The Three Stooges. Like them, they started out in vaudeville and eventually transitioned to movies and television. (The Stooges, being largely physical comedy don't really work on radio like Abbott & Costello did.) By the time this tv episode was recorded, they had been doing this skit for so many years, improving it along the way, that this version of it is *so* smoothly done.

Abbott and Costello first teamed up to do the skit in burlesque in 1936 and did this skit on the Kate Smith's radio show on March 24, 1938. In 1956, a gold record of "Who's on First?" was placed in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Coopers town, New York. In the 1970s, Selchow and Righter published a "Who's on First?" board game. In 1999, Time named the routine Best Comedy Sketch of the 20th Century. An early radio recording was placed in the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry in 2003. In 2005, the line "Who's on First?" was included on the American Film Institute's list of 100 memorable movie quotations.

The thing is that The Three Stooges were not on TV all the time. When they first started to get huge up till the early 60's their stuff was shown in theaters. My mom used to tell me that when her and my Aunt were kids they would be taken to the local theaters by my grandma, pay 10 cents each and leave them there for a whole day of cartoons and The Three Stooges.

I remember that Rush Hour 3 scene you mentioned at the end of the video. The master’s name was “Yu” (sounds like “you”) and the confusion was that Tucker’s character thought Yu was saying “you,” so when he said “Yu is blind,” for example, Tucker’s character heard it as “you is blind,” etc. I believe there was also a character named Mi (sounds like “me”) there, too. Master Yu’s assistant or something.

I don't know who was overall more famous between The Three Stooges and Abbot and Costello, but The Three Stooges mostly did shorts that would play before movies. That is also what the Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry cartoons were made for. Later they played on TV, but that was not why they were created. Abbot and Costello did feature films, now most famously ones that mixed with Horror stars like Abbot and Costello meet the Werewolf. or meet Frankenstein. But they were generally a comedy duo involved in radio as well.

Lou Costello mentions “doing some fancy catching”, but I personally have always believed that the reason no right fielder is ever named in the sketch is because that would be the position he would be assigned to. Just a guess though.

'That would be the position who is assigned to?' And don't you dare tell me "No. Who's on first?" 😁 But yeah. That's a tricky one about right field. It got me to thinking. It would have been cool had it went something like this: Lou: Tell me the right fielder's name. Bud: When Lou: Right now! Bud: How do you mean? Lou: I mean tell me the right fielder's name? Bud: When! Lou: Today that's when! Bud: No. Today is pitching and when... Lou chimes in: Is in Right field! Right field! I know that was terrible. Lol. As you alluded to they probably went through a number of scenarios about right field but decided against it.

This skit pre dates Abbot and Costello. It originally wasn’t about baseball. Various comedy acts added their schtick to it and eventually Abbot and Costello mastered the baseball version. I think it became popular once radio, movies and television were invented. Abbot and Costello had a radio show, appeared in movies and television expanding the reach of their routines. By the way, the skit you’re watching was from 1953

If you're in for one of their best movies, one that doesn't require watching other movies to really understand the humor, do "The Time of Their Lives" (1946) which is a historical drama/comedy and a good one to start with. ✌😎
