The entire rankings get mangled because they don't want to move McDavid above 95. He should pretty obviously be put at around 97, it would give enough room for created player to surpass him (although that should be exceedingly rare). Or they should allow players who are far and above better than everybody else to have stats that surpass 99 (which would help create seperation). You could have McDavid with greater than 99 stats in Offensive Awareness, Speed, Acceleration, etc.. while keeping his other stats realistic.

You have to remember that these ratings are based on everything combined and averaged. Everyone claiming McJesus should be a 99 overall, doesn’t understand that THAT would mean he’d have: Bergeron’s defensive game, Ovechkin’s shooting, Reaves’ physicality, Chris Tanev’s shot blocking, O’Reilly’s faceoffs, Keith Yandle’s durability, and Crosby’s backhand. McDavid is the best player. But he’s not the best at everything.

They fucked a lot of caps prospects. Fehrevary is like Top 6 med despite being a 1st line defender rn, McMichael is like top 9 potential despite already being in the top 9 at like 19-20 on a pretty deep team and Lapierre is like top 6 med despite having clearly shown he’s the top prospect for them. I really just don’t understand how they can justify some of their potential ratings

Luca doesn't seem to understand how overalls work, imo. 99 would mean that the average of all of his stats would be 99, but that's almost impossible as McDavid probably has lower ratings for faceoff, physical, strength, fighting, shot power, etc... Also, it would mean there's no room for growth for him (especially for franchise mode). It would make a lot more sense to have 4th liners at around 50-60 overall to allow more room between each players. So instead of going up (where the margin is really thin with only 4 possible rating points possible), you go down for as much as you need it. Example: Average prospect 30 ovr, AHLer 40 ovr, 4th line 50-60 ovr, 3rd line 60-70 ovr, 2nd line 70-80 ovr, 1st line 80-90 ovr, elite 90-92 ov, franchise 93+ ovr.

I wholeheartedly disagree with the discussion around 2:36. A player should be a 99 IF he is the best at EVERYTHING. 99 is a perfect player and no one is perfect there is a lot of stuff other centers do better than mcdavid hence he doesn't deserve a 99 rating there. In my eyes ratings should be even lower but more internally different.

Overral are base on offensive, defensive, physical and skating aspect of the game, Mcdavid cannot be higher overral if he doesnt deserve it, his physical and defensive game arent the best. The only way would be that they increased the influence of stats base on the type of players they are.

I agree. Especially if you look at a pair of guys like Hedman and Makar. You could argue that Makar should be number one based on play or based on skill/talent, but if you include even just physical stats Makar is 5'11 190ish and Hedman is like 6'6 225. Unless you discount those stats completely, Hedman is always going to have that slight edge over smaller guys based on raw size alone. I think the only thing that really matters is looking at the underlying stats for every player and comparing them there. For example, McDavid should have one of the highest ratings in the game for speed, stickhandling, offensive awareness, etc. Matthews would be high in wrist shot power and accuracy, and puck protection. Someone like Slavin wouldn't have super high skill stats but would make up for it in defensive awareness and positioning. Those are the things they should be comparing, not just overall numbers.

I love your videos, TSN. But have you ever tried creating a player? The overall rating is based on a player's attributes. In order to give McDavid 99, they'd have to boost up his attributes just to get him there. Would a McDavid with 99 strength be realistic? No. Discuss individual attributes all you want, but this is quite silly to me. The overall rating gives a general idea about how good player is on their position on NHL 22, including strengths and weaknesses, it's not based on how good a player is in real life.

Thats why the game needs to fix its rating system and make it so that certin attributes affect a position and player types overall more than others. For example if you are a playmaker having less strength shouldnt affect your overall as much as if you would have less passing. Another example would be offensive attributes if you are a defensive defenseman shouldnt bring your overall down heavily.

Chabot's rating is justified. He is definitely a top 10 defensman. The minutes he plays and his solid defense keeps Ottawas d core together. Though I do agree that Makar and Fox were rated far to low.

I may be biased but the fact they’re saying Gibson has a pretty bad team in front and that’s a good reason to be "bad" stats wise but basically Price is still average even tho their team on paper is like 22nd in the league players wise and that for the past 4 years, Price is great but the team in front can barely score, since 2016 no one except Domi has pass 70 points and they still missed the playoffs by like a point, I’d say that’s why Price is still on top cause he’s great but he can’t get shutouts every game you know

In terms of Luca's argument about why ratings don't go past 95, my theory is they want to leave some leeway. For example, in franchise mode in NHL 21 I had McDavid grow to a 98. If he started at 98 or 99 then either he has no growth or he surpasses 100. Personally, I don't like the idea of someone surpassing 100 overall so I think the current system makes sense. What I think they should do is leave the ceiling the same at 95 but scale everyone down to make better use of the entire scale of 1-99. I'm not saying we need 1 overalls lmao. But make like NHL 21's 80 overall equal 22's 70 overall, for example. Doing so would basically accomplish exactly what Luca is saying but wouldn't yield 100+ overalls in franchise mode.

I don’t agree that the players ratings should be higher - that’s too simple a solution. The problem is that the individual stats should matter more. The difference that 1 point in any attribute makes should be greater. That way 99 speed vs 96 speed actually feels different and mcdavid is much faster than everyone else. It doesn’t make sense for any player to be 99 ovr since no one truly has 99 in every attribute

I hate the 99 debate. There is no room for any improvement in McDavid's game? Hes the leagues best shooter, passer, handles, defense, skating, etc? He beats every single other center in every single category? setting the 99 bar as "best we have" means what, Mathews gets a 110 ratting on his wrist shot? and then whats a 99 mean if you have guys going over 100? A 99 overall should be unachievable and that lets you rank guys more accurately because McDavid is still the best but some other guys might have one thing they do slightly better.

Ovi has one Art Ross to go with 3 Lindsays, 3 Harts, a Calder, 9 Rockets which Kucherov has zero and those 9 Rockets dont even line up with the 9 times hes scored 50 and again Kucherov has only hit 40 twice. Nfl has the 99 club... It's because there are several players at different positions which are just beasts... NHL has Mcdaddy and maybe McKinnon that are at that level. No defense, goalie or winger would be a 99 as well. So I think because there are so few that's why there isn't a 99 in chel.
