The smile on Osborne's face while he is driving that beautiful machine makes me want to sell my car and find a classic

When a teenaged gearhead in 1970, a car nut neighbour ( owned a Shelby Mustang GT 500, a 1969 GTO ‘Judge Ram Air 4 ! And a McLaren Mk 6 GT), one of three, gave me a 12 mile long ride in his new 1970 yellow Boss 302. High revving machine that hit 110 mph on a long sweeping curve of a narrow 2 lane country road. I’ll never forget that ride! And he was trained at the Jim Russel driving school at Mt Tremblant.

That's a ride for LIFE. One you'll never forget. I had a few of those memories as a kid and now fortunately have a couple cool rides because of it. Cheers, from Canada :-)

The 69 Mach1 was always my favorite and wanted one when new but wasn't old enough to drive yet and had no money!

While I’ve always been more of a Corvette guy than Mustang guy, I’ve test-driven them over the years and only bad luck prevented me from having one in the garage. Thanks so much for this look back.

A Great Video…my Uncle had a grabber blue ‘70. BOSS 302. He took me on my first Mustang ride when I was four years old …pinning me back in that white bucket seat, power shifting …chirping the tires. I couldn’t see over the dash brow in front of me. I could only look out the side window while we were going 100mph! It’s a high screaming rpm machine!

My current car is a 17 SS Camaro 6 speed. Love this car. About 68k miles now and bought it new. Just changing oil and tires and 1 set of brake pads.

I have a suspicion Ford changed to the two headlight style in 70 to improve the aero of the car , the 69 Camaro seems much sleeker, Chevy made special lowered spindles for the 70's I heard somewhere and the Boss 302's had beefed up front spindles and re inforcements on the shock towers a problem area on all early Mustangs.

I had a friend back in 1971 and 72 who had a 1970 Boss 302 that he bought used. Surprisingly fast for its size and era. We were in a Local sports car club together and on Solo style events it was competitive with the smaller British and Italian cars. Unfortunately the engine failed after about 6 months the postmortem decision was a lack of maintenance and it having been really beat. And of course he couldn’t afford a new or rebuilt engine so he sold it at a loss. Years later he talked about how much he missed it.

A hard car to say goodbye to, surely. However, nice to know he drove it hard, as intended - that's good use.

I would love to compare the 1970 Boss 302, to the 1970 Z28, on the track and give an honest assessment. My H.S. History teacher had a 1970 Green Boss 302. Made him cool.

Most people look at this car. And think it is only a drag race car. Not a car that can handle. That shaker hood.😘 The Boss is an all around vehicle. I missed the 2012 Boss. Like to see it one day. Trans Am racing. The most competitive racing of our time. ❤💙😛👍😎

Mark Donahue was the driver and Roger Penske was the owner. In 67, 68 and 69 Mark was driving Penske's Sunoco Camaro's and beating Ford in most of the races in 68 and 69. In 1970 Penske didn't like Chevy's lackluster support and switched the AMC's Javelin to battle Ford.

Thank you for the shot of the '69. I never liked the nose of the '70. '69 Mustang was the top of the early years. I haven't driven a modern performance Mustang. I'm sure they are better.

Not intentionally. They certainly weren’t the focus of the Boss 302s production - didn’t even notice when it came loose. Luckily, no high-traffic, public roads were used in this episode.

Why the Boss 429 wasn't put in a Torino or Cyclone GT is a mystery. It would have been a better balanced package

Absolutely.

You had to put a lot of work into the engine, suspension, and tires (especially tires) of a stock Boss 302 or Z28 before they even started to realize their potential on the track. Off the showroom floor, they weren't any better than "OK" among other muscle cars in a straight line and, with those greasy Polyglas bias-ply tires, they didn't get around the corners much better either. A late model Civic R or Golf GTI would run circles around them today. All that said, which one would I want to own now? Hands down, a '69-'70 Boss 302 or Z28. Cars are better in almost every measurable aspect now except two: looks and feel (the mechanical, visceral kind).

It would've been cool as F if Ford made a big 429 to compete with Dodge. Even a new 351 would've been awesome.

I wonder what happened to the comment I made here? Did I offend someone? Anyhow I looked through the Chilton manuals for the specs on the engines and it feel my comment was correct. At least I learned from that research. The Boss 302 needs to be revved and is not a practical daily driver imho.
