The lead singer, Felix Cavaliere, was playing organ in another group that was touring Europe in 1963. There was this other band on the bill that Felix had never heard of before --- The Beatles! When Felix got back to the States, he put this group together. The ultimate, good-time, feel-good ,blue-eyed soul. They just had a marvelous string of beautiful songs throughout the Sixties.

"I was feeling so bad. I asked my Family Doctor just what I had. I said Doctor, Doctor Mr. MD. A can you tell me. What's ailing me. And he said All I really need is Good Lovin." "Good Lovin" was a number one hit back in (1966) for The Young Rascals. These lyrics went over my head when I was a 12-year-old boy back in 1966 when this song came out. We were just grooving to the music not realizing the lyrics and their meaning. Today as a 69-year-old proud senior citizen. My good doctor prescribed my wife for me, and it was the best medicine I have ever had. I have been addicted to her for 45 years. The Doctor was right...All I needed was Good Lovin. Awesome response and reaction and upload to one of the greatest groups of the 60's.

This performance of "Good Lovin'" is in the running for the greatest performance ever by a rock band on the Ed Sullivan show, and he had ALL the names! Relentless energy, awesome vocals, and drummer Dino Dinelli is just a pleasure to watch and worth the price of admission on his own! Lennon and McCartney had nothing vocally on Felix and Eddie, but both groups had a distinct advantage over most by having two lead singers!

This song and live performance on the Ed Sullivan show was early in the band’s career when they were called “the Young Rascals”. If you look at their “costumes” they are dressed like little kids, schoolboys, from the 1920’s or 30’s with knickers, round collar shirts, thin ties, newsboy cap on Felix, etc. This was meant to resemble the movie icons, “the Little Rascals” (later Our Gang) from the 20’s and 30’s. Later the group became just “the Rascals”, and dropped the schoolboy image, 😅

What he has in his right-hand Mel is two Maracas. The Young Rascal were known as "Blue Eye Soul." Just like the "Four Season," the "Righteous Brothers," "Rare Earth." and "Three Dog Night." Great reaction to one of the classic songs of the 60's. The Drummer Dino Daneli played another percussion instrument known as a "Conga Drum" for their biggest hit "Groovin (1967).

As a matter of fact,he said in an interview that he went to a Record Store in Harlem, NY and found the original recording of “Good Lovin by a Black group, called The Olympics.

Great band, great music. LIVE music. the ed sullivan show gave us SO much great music. Even as a little kid i looked forward to sunday nights. Ed did not allow lip-synching. Sometimes the music was pre recorded but usually not. That is the late great Dino Danelli on drums. He does not get enough credit, but he was badass. Sadly he passed a few months ago. Great fun to watch. Another gread drummer to watch is Carmine Appice. There’s a great live video (i think it is also from the sullivan show) of his band Vanilla Fudge covering the supremes classic ‘set me free’. Carmine is a Beast! Check it out.
