In cases like these, you can't compare on the basis of titles, but when you have a strong team, which is equally comparable then it is the best measure. England used to have their so called golden generation, every position was with a renowned name in their squad, similar to Spain. But what happened, Xavi and Co won 2 Euros and 1 world cup in 4 years while Scholes couldn't do anything for 15 years.(Lost to Greece!!! Let that sink in). Also, head to head with Barcelona and Manchester United, Xavi and Co were so much better. The statistics and the eye test also favour Xavi. The opinion of former pundits also favour Xavi.

Xabi Alonso without a doubt: while the other 3 might have made more astonishing, curved or powerful long-range passes, Xabi’s technique could cross the ball across the pitch with the accuracy of a surgeon, while the ball travelled juuust outside the reach of the defending player’s heads; which was deadly for opponents as they didn’t have time to readjust properly due to how useful his long balls were. All said, the 4 of them are beasts 🤙🏽

Xabi Alonso was indispensable for Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern and Spain, to give you an example of Alonso's importance, Real Madrid lost more games that Alonso missed than Ronaldo's. Man played and excelled as a single pivot, double pivot, midfield 3, and couldn't be left out out of Spain's midfield that had prime Busquets, Xavi and Iniesta. Man could play tiki taka or long balls, balls on the ground or in the air. Rafa Benitez, Jose Mourhinho, Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancellotti, Vicente Del Bosque all build around him or in spains case, had to fit him him. Man had the most accurate and lightest long balls I have seen players have. Every club dipped after he left. I am actually curious how Pep Guardiola would had evolved if he had a younger and prime version of Alonso.

Very difficult to say the best, in history there are many specialist long ball players like Scholes, Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Platini, Gerson "Left-handed gold", Frank De Boer, Boateng, Koeman, Beckenbauer, Matthäus, Rijkaard, Rooney, Messi, Hummels, Kroos, Modric, Beckham, Riquelme, Pirlo, Kimmich... In my more than 30 years following football, the best I've seen is Paul Scholes. Because in my view he's the one who best knew how to throw accurately at high distances.
