In terms of actual character I definitely prefer Alder. He's one of my favorite champions for the fact that he plays a major role in the original Black and White. He shows up to give you and Cheren advice during the main story and goes with you to help stop Team Plasma. We learn during the story that Alder lost his partner Pokémon (we assume it was likely a Volcarona which he later replaced with another) to an illness and this loss caused him to wander the region on a journey for self discovery. He's constantly teaching Cheren and the protagonist that strength and power isn't everything and that its most important to be happy and to enjoy the time you have with others. When N heads to he Pokémon League, Alder, as Champion, becomes the first line of defense against N and his new legendary Pokémon. Despite losing, Alder definitely showed me why he was the Region's Champion for his duration with him doing everything he can to stop Team Plasma. Iris' character in the game isn't as interesting but I think she definitely has one of the stronger Champion teams in the games. So strength-wise, Iris I would say is definitely stronger but I love how they showed us Alder's character.

I'm totally with you on that one. Alder is one of the best examples of great writing in Gen 5, honestly. He can't shine as much as such character would in any game because of N - who's story, personality, lines and construction are just out of this world.

Iris is stronger, and I am okay with that. What I am not okay with is how Pokemon (the franchise) is treating Alder. Even as recent as Pokemon Masters' "Champion Road", he is the only Champion to be omitted from the event, but N makes an appearance, as does Iris, Blue, Red, Lance, and all the other Champions. It feels like the company and the games just cant stop giving the guy flack, and I feel like that's unfair to the character.

This is because N becomes the champion in BW just before the N's Castle bit. You beat the Elite Four, only to find that N has beaten Alder, and then summons Team Plasma's base, N's Castle.

Honestly, these two are fairly strong, and in the beginning, Alder did nearly put me down into redoing that champion battle once, but Iris has caused me more trouble and having to re-attempt the battle much more than Alder, and I’ve actually seen some KZbinrs put their teams together in a battle, and Iris SMOKED Alder. I was able to figure out a strategy to beat Iris’ Haxorus: 1. Use my own Haxorus’ Outrage on hers. 2. Let her Haxorus’ Focus Sash activate and have her set up with Dragon Dance. 3. Let Iris use a Full Restore to fix her Haxorus’ HP while it has one HP. 4. Finish her Haxorus off with one final Outrage from mine.

I'd say Iris is overall stronger but if Iris underestimates Alder considering his team isn't as shocking as one might expect then he has that advantage. Regardless I feel Iris would catch on after the first battle and while Alder would put up a fight, once his element of surprise is gone I feel that Iris would win. Till Cynthia meets Dr. Strange and she circles into the middle of their match taking them both on at the same time and absolutely wiping the floor with them.

Honestly, Alder always gave me a harder time. But that's mainly because I've always EV trained my pokemon, even in casual playthroughs, since I found out what it was. I find it genuinely fun. The reason Alder gave me a harder time is because I always forget his pokemon are as high level as they are and end up challenging the league again right away. Usually I end up hardly being able to beat him, but even then, sometimes it takes a couple tries.

@@SuperGamefreak18 Actually, level doesn't matter as much as you think. For Alder's team, yeah, that's why he was more difficult, but thats only because his team composition wasn't great. I touched on that in my comment. But for most battles, they tend to be hard because of the pokemon they use rather than the level their at. Take Cynthia as an example. Her team is lower level than Alder's, but she's considered the stronger of the two by far because of her team composition being much much better. Her team is more diverse, and they mostly cover their weaknesses, and over all are just better pokemon.

I've always found Alder to be the harder fight for me. Even disregarding levels Alder's pokemon are ones that I just think about less and don't know as well as Iris's. All of her pokemon I've used on teams plenty of times and just know their weaknesses without needing to really think about it. Aldar actually makes me think a little.

to be fair, alder has in-universe statements that make to clear he couldn’t draw out his full power against n (when n explained how he won; indecision) and assisted iris mid battle like iris assisted ash, so all in all, even though he’s weaker now, he realistically could’ve/would’ve won those battles when they occurred as we know n and iris are/were still growing while he just traveled around being a jolly old man rarely pushing his limits

@@casualchikorita2973 I managed to beat the guy, with some Flame Charges from Pignite, and Digs from Krokorok, and my Pignite evolved right after the battle. I just had trouble with Elesa because I wasn’t prepared enough. I had to evolve my Sandile, so it could withstand her Zebstrika’s Flame Charges better and hit harder.

Doesn't help that they're capped off with a fast, strong and (for that point in the game) bulky mon in Zebstrika

Just anecdotally I definitely had a harder time with Iris. In fact she and Cynthia are the only champions I distinctly remember struggling with. Seeing a breakdown of these teams, I think I understand better why that was. As a side note, I love champion Iris' design. The very princess-y look suits her and makes a nice contrast from the (at the time) only other female champ, Cynthia, and her very sleek, almost business-like design.

Iris' party isn't very good, since it has a lot of shared weaknesses, but Alder's is just godawful. People love to say Diantha's is bad, but I think his is worse. Ignoring the huuuuuuuge weaknesses to rock and fire, Volcarona is the only strong Pokemon on his party and it's moveset is garbage. It's like they forgot he was in the game and just slapped 5 Pokemon onto him.

If we’re going this logic, then we can say the same for a large majority of champions. For instance, we have Lance who has a full team of Pokémon with a rock type weakness, Steven with his Fighting/Fire weakness, Cynthia with her Grass/Ice weakness, Diantha with her Steel/Fairy weakness and so on. It’s not bad to have shared weaknesses, as long as you have some sort of coverage. Imo though, I find Diantha to be a lot weaker due to the fact that you get access to Mega Mawile in-game, *most* of her Pokémon having 0 options to take it out. But then again, it all depends on your own team builds.

@@catturdz6099 It goes beyond shared weaknesses, most of the other Champions have Pokemon that have a BST over 500 and potential for good moves. Alder does not. Other than Volcarona, Vanilluxe is his only Pokemon with a BST over 500, and it has an absolutely terrible movepool. The rest of his Pokemon are slow (minus Accelgor) with middling defenses and low coverage against potential weaknesses.

@@SIFAssassin You might be right about Alder, but how can you imply this with Iris’ team? How is her team not good as stated in your previous claims? I’ve done some calculations, and turns out her challenge mode team has the 2nd highest bst average compared to every other champion including Cynthia. (Lance’s Original champion team almost being cut off by her in just a sliver of points.) Not only that, but Iris’ team has so much coverage, such as Hydreigon with Fire Blast, Focus Blast, Surf and Dragon Pulse, while holding a Wise Glasses to boost the power of its attacks. A Focus Sash Dragon Dancing Haxorus that could potentially sweep anyone’s team considering that Haxorus has the highest base attack stat of any Dragon type besides Legendaries. We also have an Autotomize Head Smashing Aggron with its Rock Head Ability as well as Earthquake for coverage while holding a Muscle Band. Lapras with Thunder, Blizzard, Hydro Pump and Sing while also holding a Zoom Lens. As well as a deadly Flying Gem Acrobatics Archeops. Even without her challenge mode team, a Sheer Force Druddigon, which by the way is holding onto a Life Orb, is as threatening as it gets. So what exactly makes this team bad? If anything, this is probably one of the best champion teams thus far aside from Cynthia (can be debatable).

They both are in a sense, depending on the context in which you look at it. Here are the examples. If we're going Off of experience alone, it's *Alder.* But if we're going Off of potential, it's *Iris.* Not to mention, Iris literally did beat Alder to become the champion, so also plays into her potential and how she actually is in fact overall stronger then Alder.

I had a harder time with Alder because my moves all missed and Volcarona got up 5 Quiver Dances before almost sweeping me. Luckily my Duranmitan was able to move first and one shot it with a Rock Slide. I still had Krookodile but I was still shaking, knowing that Krookodile had no shot. Iris was easy because a friend convinced me to use Vanilluxe and that took half her team out.

I never fought alder as a kid but I do feel he is the stronger as his bond with pokemon is what sells it for me winning and losing isn't everything in pokemon at it's really alder as a concept to get me try try underrated mons like deerling like audino and taught me the strongest of the strong he taught me that everything deserves a shot at something (except bastiondon) like I'll use pachirisu over Luxray electivire and magnezone girafarig over a better normal or psychic I do believe alder is stronger and chose to hold back his true strength out of respect for what he believes and he taught me these lessons

I'm team iris honestly had both white and white 2 so for me it felt like a natural story progression from her being a young inexperienced final dream leader to the Pokemon league champion and it was definitely a tough battle plus her theme is fire 🔥🔥🔥 even the battle screen with the psychedelic look felt like the championship battle you missed out on in the first game IMHO.

I think that Alder's team does a better job showing off the special things in his region. The Accelgor/Escavalier link is interesting, and Volcarona plays a part in the regions lore, and the levels should play a part as they do exist. And I never played the 2 versions, but did it actually say that Iris beat Alder to become champion? Do we know that he resumed the position after the events of the first games?

But I did got to the post game for white 2.

let be honest, Iris was set up to be champion, because her team has Hydreigon, which is psuedo legendary. Alder by far, was the only running champion who doesn't own a psuedo legendary on his team. Lance has Dragonite, Steven has metagross, Cynthia has Garchomp, Diantha has Goodra and Iris has Hydreigon. Gen 5 did Alder dirty, and make him look like an opened and set-up character than a real champion.
