Technically within reasonable bounds I'd have the right to free speech. Though not to cause offence, for family or others, I agreed to keep my pragmatic observations off Facebook etc, and confine myself to where such views can be tolerated, like Reddit with an unrecognisable sign in name. Or on odd times here, where more logical expansive perspectives have been found. I was surprised how much more information I could find with the Ukraine /Russia situation on CGTN compared to how long it could take to get reasonable information from other news/info sites. It's only since this conflict when I stumbled on a video from CGTN. So desperate to find something more on the Ukraine/ Russia situation I was not dissuaded by the label that from Chinese govt, wikipedia link deciding I'll give it a try. The person from Moscow is excellent in his concept of discussing various human rights between countries. The US is far from perfect . Like the compare said walking in his city at 3 am and feeling safe is positive. I live In AU and am a retired social worker who worked with segments of the population with dysfunction and disadvantages. I've seen that those who don't come from backgrounds of sound values, stable backgrounds, well educated with adequate social standing and material means are not well equiped to handle "the rights of freedom, individual choice". Especially in our Western ideology where certain dubious choices get to be fashionably supported, even becoming seen as sacred and end up further confusing the vulnerable. Sometimes even the youth of the advantaged sectors. A weakness of the Western world is in a lack of reinforcing responsibility and respect for other members of your community, kin, teachers etc.. Not as key values or through social structures. Instead we have a naval gazing focus on unique individualism. Ironically ending up with slaves to whatever is temporarily fashionable to echo, too little that logically works or is actually functional. When too many in a population wobble on what they can confidently respect about their society or selves, they become inconsistent in respecting other cultures and ethnicities. You can't deliver what you haven't got properly yourself. Plus we doom our own societies children from "unregulated" vulnerable situations to repeat their parents lives.

Actually in the past decade a lot of the "other countries" have moved away from the western alliances/pacts. That is wht in Africa there is a lot of upheaval with people and governments openly critcising western policies and even cutting diplomatic ties. Even government spending on infrastracture and equipment has gone east. It is a slow process but the results are visible in daily life. Just this week a south african minister had to apologise for her utterances about the ukraine conflict qhere she said russia had to pull out. This was a good discussion, but the hatred and racism towards Asian-Americans started long before the pandemic. Geraldo Rivera recently spoke on this truth and said he hoped Al Sharpton would address this tragic issue.

I think it would be helpful to have a discussion with Western experts on what “human rights” are. Western idea tends to limit “human rights” to process rights, whereas China takes a more comprehensive perspective which includes “opportunity rights” (as well as process rights). So this difference in approach needs to be explored further.

@@gpac8147 Not sure I understand. I do think "human rights" in Western societies seem to be more limited than "human rights" in China and some other Asian societies (e.g., Vietnam, Singapore, etc). The contrast is similar to the difference between "libertarianism" vs "liberalism" in the US context, where the former tends to stress "rights" whereas the latter stresses "outcomes" (as well as "rights"). Hope this helps clarify my position.

What about the concentration camps in china that are convienantly named education and training centers where they imprisoned the Uighurs people. I dont think its healthy to accuse a country of something like this if your own country is just as bad. Watching families being seperated and crucified all because religion has been banned from china

@@bluelantern2984 I wonder if you have misunderstood my comment. I haven't expressed a view on whether China has a better human rights record than a Western country. (I do have a view, but have not expressed it.) My point is simply that the concept of "human rights" needs to be explored further. In particular, there seems to be a difference between Western and Chinese concepts of human rights. My claim (which I am happy to defend) is that the Chinese concept of human rights is more comprehensive than the Western concept. The Western concept tends to focus primarily on procedural rights - e.g., free speech, elections, property rights, etc. Whereas the Chinese concept also takes account of opportunity rights - e.g., a right to good health, to good education, to social security, freedom from poverty, etc.

@@gpac8147 Hi, I reject the premise (assumed) that the CCP's highest priority is to maintain State power. If I understand the position of the CCP rightly, their highest priority is to serve the people in general (and the working class in particular). It's true that it also insists on the CCP leading the government (in consultation with other political parties), but I would argue that is an "instrumental goal", not an "end goal". The "end goal" is the wellbeing of the people, and CCP leadership is thought to be an essential step towards that goal. It may help to understand the CCP's position if we distinguish between two types of political systems. The Western system views rivalry between political parties as fundamental; whereas the Chinese system views cooperation between political parties as fundamental. I don't think that one is demonstrably superior to the other. A system that stresses rivalry has its benefits and weaknesses (think about how it stymies the US government's response to Covid, and gun violence). A system that stresses cooperation has its weaknesses (e.g., "group think") and benefits (e.g., harmony, ability to implement long-term strategies, etc). There is so much "prior beliefs" and Western media prejudice about the CCP that it is difficult for an outsider to understand China without taking the trouble to read Chinese government policies for themselves and understand the context for decisions made in China. We must look at China objectively and this requires us to keep an open mind, think independently, and not let Western media narratives (and our own prior beliefs) pre-determine our views about China.

@@gpac8147 I think China would be happy to acknowledge that it requires its residents to comply Chinese laws. Is that what you mean by "absolute obedience to the State"? I understand the Chinese government also provides guidance and use propaganda to shape the behaviour of its residents. I get it that this seems controversial to a Western audience, but I would argue that the US government itself uses these extra-legal methods to shape behaviour and public opinion (e.g., by co-opting journalists, media; funding think tank activities, etc). The difference is whereas the Chinese government is upfront about their use of guidance and propaganda, the US government is more subtle about its methods. As for reading Chinese government documents, I agree that a lot of documents are in Chinese. But China does publish plenty of documents in English too. Having said that, I generally think China could do more to make its policies and practices more transparent to an international audience. I believe that is something they are trying to improve on.

Disgusting how the West's rallying for the Nazis and their US handlers. Europe in particular is irredeemable. Shame on them! Total moral collapse. That Merkel said nothing when Victoria Nuland aided the Nazi coup in 2014 reveals who Germans really are. Germany should never have been allowed to continue. . . that vanquished land should've gone to the Jews, and the Palestinians would not have had to pay for the moral failures of the German people. We are reliving that mistake. This time, get it right.
