João Miguel I am German and this is UNTRUE. Anyone making an effort to speak German at all is better than people waltzing into our country and expecting everyone to speak English (like Americans often do). That said, when we try to learn another language, we quickly try to perfect it because, as Germans, we are perfectionists. So we expect others to at least try to speak correctly, too, after years and years in the country.

topic suggestion for an episode: could you do a video on villages in Germany (Dörfer) and why people live there and how the lifestyle differs from cities ? the existence of so many villages in Germany is very interesting to me, especially because used i imagine Germany just full of big cities and factories since it manufactures everything! but then i knew there are many villages! here are some questions that came to my mind: firstly, are they just residential areas and people work elsewhere, or do people work in there? what leisure activities do you o when there aren't any big city markets ? any klischees on city vs village people ? do you get the same services in villages but it's just more quite than cities? or does it have less services and you're disconnected and speak a weird dialect no one understands ? do they locally manage maintenance fees for roads or is it central ? and also importantly, how do they manage their local issues like spending on road construction and maintenance? do they local committees or is it centrally organized by the government ? is it true than people know everyone there and it's full of gossip ? :P

I am from a rather small German town, but with good access to cities by train. Some bigger companies have offices in smaller towns because it is cheaper. So services that could be provided from afar are sometimes done in towns. For example my mom makes technical drawings of machines. The biggest thing at my home town is the steel industry where my dad workes. Internet and TV is accessible in all the small towns, at least I never heard one that has none. There are different Dialects across Germany, but all understand and speak Hochdeutsch, as nearly all the TV shows are in it.

The viewer might notice that almost all of the people questioned were indecisive and uncertain. This confusion is a symptom of something that has failed in a culture. For anyone interested, the correct answer based on etiquette is that the person who invites the other person (to a date) is the one who is the host and therefore should pay. To illustrate the concept, it would probably seem ridiculous to invite someone to your home and when they arrive, to hand them a hammer and ask them to build you a house. It is your invitation for a date, just as it is your house that you have offered to share for a visit. These are not the other person's responsibility.

I was in Germany for 3 months this year, and it was very uncommon for me to see how it was completly normal to pay 50/50 in dates. I'm form Mexico, and here even my (male) friends offer to pay for me, and I find it nice. Also here it would be rude I think, if the man does not pay the bill when he goes out for dinner with her girlfriend, as a couple. Only if first, the girl offers to pay, and if he accepts, then it's ok.

I think it sounds cute and you are such an inspiration to people like me who is also an American learning German. I am so afraid to practice speaking German with natives because I don't want to be made fun of for my accent/pronunciations or for people to think I am not trying, because trust me I AM (and I know you are too!!) In the US, women think he only wants to be friends if he doesn't pay. Okay, but how do you model a relationship in order to come to such a conclusion? It is a one-way street where the man just gives and she just takes, because she deserves that, obviously? Or do they think that their company alone is so wonderful that everything else is the man's job? Or is it even more transactional, and so the man pays money and she provides... other... things? B20

Wenn es ist erste date, we should split. but the reality is, when dating and the bill comes up usually it's the men's job to bury it. All girls are adamant about it regardless of their culture and bankroll. Have never seen girls show the initiative to chip in on dates. not even German dates. There was a Swiss girl, she paid our meal and I was so grateful! Ladies, if you want to chip in, you get a lot of bonus points, or simply take turns!

It all depends on how the question was asked... If a man flirtingly asks a woman to dinner and a movie, he pays... If a man says to a woman, "A group of us is meeting at the local pub Friday night, come on out if you want" ....then he is not obligated to pay...if she shows up and they become the center of each others attention, I think the man should pay to show he is interested in pursuing a stronger relationship... I wish some of the ladies I went out with would have paid... I think many thought, if they were going tobe my 'eye candy'..I should pay dearly...

I think the man should pay on the first date because I come from a traditional background where men are expected to embrace a role of leadership and taking the initiative in a relationship and with a female. But if she puts her foot and says she would rather pay for herself then I will concede because I hate the tension that could create.

I am American and living in Lower Austria. Even here, there is an FKK Strand on the local lake ... not to be mean but mostly old fat people. So ... not my cup of tea. ;D I do however know younger people that live in nudism houses in Vienna, so it's not "COMPLETELY CONFINED" to the elderly generation.

If the food is awesome, they both pay. If it sucks monkey nuts, the one who insisted on the shitty place pays, plus, owes the other one another date/meal that doesn't suck (provided both are still interested, and willing to chock this one up to good intentions - if not, not). Hey, when you insist on a place, you either put your stake in it, or you put another steak in it! ;-) Now, if the meal sucks but, originally both parties had been (more or less) equally enthused about the Monkey Nut Suck Hut - just two unwitting victims of the hitherto unbeknownst treachery of the Monkey Nut menu - then they're simply back to dutch, and aforementioned secondary considerations ensue. Caveat: This rule of thumb only works when both persons are honest. -Phill, Las Vegas

As a Colombian when I had gone out to someone, normally we pay half the bill each one. I think in that way is nice and fair in dates. There is also this shit here though, That most men think that if the man pays at least, they're gonna to expect to receive something in return, like a kiss or beyond.

It's hard to respect a man who can not even invite and pay for me on a date or vacation. And it's not about the money. Its about the gender roles which for me still matter.
