Thank you Gary. This desperate situaion is preserved and worsened by the systematiic devaluation of life. We are all complicit in accepting the judgment that vast numbers of people in society are worthless and disposable. Morality extends to keeping people alive at a subsistence level and forcing them to compete for scarce jobs and resources, and failing to value the important stuff that people actually do, and the stuff that they would do if they were resourced to do it. Meanwhile the very rich are self serving on an unimaginably grand scale that warps their experieence of being human to such an extennt that they embrace everything that is systemic and technological whilst rejecting any notion of common humanity, shared experiences, pooling of resources and solving problems together as a society of sentient intelligent beings. A world ruled by elites who meet in boardrooms is a world of stunted growth and disease. This is not good for anyone.

For some sense of ‘rise’, some sense of ‘we’ [and some sense of ‘against them’], this is obvious, and has been obvious for centuries. The middle and poorer classes, presenting credible political demands against the billionaires is imo the first step. Escalating as necessary. Look to the chartists. Tax Wealth Now.

Another issue with this rise and make a difference is how vague this statement really is. Who is we ? What does rise mean - ie, what is the vehicle of the political movement. How do we create a political movement which is effective, enact change which is protected. How do we really enact change without division within our own class systems.

The Corbyn era failed. So why hold that up as a good example? He wasn't the right person, he didn't shake anything up beyond the commentary. Nothing changed, things got worse. This failure wasn't down to the opposition from the super wealthy, establishment, corporations or media. It was from their failure to have an effective strategy to deal with that opposition and a plan to appeal to an electorate that could put them in government.

Brexit was going to make Britain have less stuff overall, so only redistribution could do anything other than make the poor poorer.

That argument is always used. But the last time anything like this was tried was the 60-70s and many fortunes greatly diminished & estates were sold. Which is exactly what we want. The rich to get poorer & ever one else to get better off. But even this comment length is longer than people looking into the actual consequences of how it was last tried. So people shrug say.. "oh your right!" And we dismiss the measure which is what they want.

Support community efforts for self sufficiency. Food, water, energy and accomodation resources are overwhelmingly owned and supplied by the super wealthy. To stop the transition of wealth further, focus on protecting providing for ourselves

The big political parties are owned by the "few", the new "international oligarchy" who are richer than nation states have too much power and influence. We cannot (in the short term) change this system and so we need to build our own alternatives, as a means of survival, as an example to others and to create a groundswell of ideas which will, eventually, result in the changes we all need. @@englishsteve1465 you can't just change this by acting individually or locally. Need to act nationally. Ie don't vote tory. Vote for whoever will get them out in your constituency. Also join a party to press for action. Also join union. Also join co-ops. Etc. Both and. If people try and knit their own alternative and ignore national and local politics then sheisters will get in again and things will get worse. Edit. On the other hand I agree in building the world we want through coops and cooperation and exert power rather than asking those already in power to change.

Here's the one thing you can do this time to help. Slowly those weekly calls will make a difference and if you can plan them well enough you'll already know what doing them will result in.

I've been thinking about how civil disobedience can reach critical mass before things get out of hand. I think strikes will increase in frequency once things get worse, but would be better if we organize now, because there will also be a lot more violence and divisions when things are worse. Global and united strikes are the only way to get the rich to budge.

People like my Teacher neighbour who would love to change society are too tired and busy to react….. This is a big problem. People feel defeated. Not only do we need to educate people. We need solidarity / mutual aid movements that can bring the tired masses along with us.

@@Syphil23 Same here Phil, I think more financial education at a young age is a good start to capturing people and making them think whilst they have the energy. The majority of society are just earning a wage, spending most of their income and time on living so I'm looking to someone like Gary and hopefully other groups to head something that means people in that position can understand and contribute with the small amount of spare time resource they have so the message in numbers gets out there.

Great video Gary. As someone who’s coming to the end of my working life after 45 years of work all I can say is that I have watched people’s terms and conditions go in a steady downward spiral. I fear for my two sons and how their lives will be. The big question is how do we reach the millions who are either already too brainwashed or have simply given up? I myself feel helpless and hopeless. The twin threats of climate catastrophe and economic collapse worry the life out of me and all I see is the car accelerating towards the cliff. I admire and applaud your efforts but how do we become an effective movement? It seems to me that there are so many different movements who all share a similar goal (XR, Diem 25, Green Party, WWF, Greenpeace, Naomi Klein, any Charity you can think of) but they’re all divided and battling individually. Why not a unified organisation bringing them all together to fight for a common cause with agreed common goals? Thank you if you read this. Solidarity brother.

After all, when we were young many of us were trying to build alternatives, with our worker co-operatives, including radical bookshops and magazines etc. We were the age of Schumacher’s Small is Beautiful. Unfortunately Gary the middle and working classes in this country have been set against each other since before the Chartists. That said, I can’t think of another time when the masses interests have been so aligned. The recent redistribution of wealth from the bottom up has dragged a usually protected middle class into the fight and things cannot carry on as they are. I monitor KZbin comments on the news channels [Im an author its a form of research] the divide tactics are no longer working. Yesterday the Govt announced a crackdown on transgender toilets - I read 100 comments, almost no one was buying it. Everyone knew it was another distraction from the f-uk up the govt has made of the country. Like you I seek out news and political commentary channels I like Politics Joe and would add Double Down news (Novara's a Marxist talking shop so am less keen on them). I also try to seek out channels that don't align with my core beliefs (i.e. conservative ones). It's tiring but you can get some understanding of where there is commonality. The sad truth is that nothing can change without political power, there is no glorious revolution coming in the UK. To get elected in Britain is difficult and expensive. A successful centre/left party will rely on the votes of people that don't particularly agree, like or trust each other to get into government.

I’d love to see more deep-dive videos on HOW to tax the rich in this current system. Or theoretic ways we could in future. Like Gary interviewing a specialist on AI… is it possible to use AI to make tax avoidance and loop holes with stamp duty etc impossible? Or a system with much more extreme devolution (enabled by tech)… would taxing the Rich then become more realistic? My brain wants to start building up a positive vision of how experts could make this happen.

It’s very bad, few people under 40 now even remember what a decent U.K. looks like. We took back the country in a not well publicised bloodless coup after ww2. About 2 million working class trained killers came home from defeating the Wehrmacht & demanded a "country fit for hero’s" it had been talked about in the dark days. When all the working class could do was sacrifice on every front. So they asked - for what?! - and we’re promised a lot. We decided in a rare beautiful moment to hold them to it. They were terrified the country would be taken from them in a day if we wanted too. So they gave. Then people started reading things like ‘The ragged trousered philanthropists’ and we also got a beautiful labour government ( a real one not Starmer ) And the funny thing was, this way of raising up the bottom to almost the lower middle actually economically worked better than anything the short term upper class had done. Everyone had some money. Hobbies, clubs, holidays, new furniture, cars. It was a consumer boom. It lead to the country booming. Lots of middle class and new rich were created. Social mobility was becoming possible. We need to tell the story that not only is the economic theory of the last 40 years bad. It’s idiotic & leads to the eventual demise of the country. We need to tell the story I just told. But better, more interesting and well written. So that people will understand, the only ones who ever have something to lose, from a country that treats us all well,from the working class to the upper middle class - is the very rich! Gary is right. We must not hate someone who is 3 times better off or they despise the poor who is 5 times worse off. No! If we only understood and shifted our gaze to the small groups who are 50,000 times better off and more! Well we would have a vast number of allies and with the middle class so comes the people in general with the ability to write well & talk well & the idea that people want to listen to them. - which lets be honest, we working class never believe of ourselves… All revolutions have succeeded when the middle leads the workers against those with everything. Ours can too. The problem is the media! But I just turned 50 I have to hope that more & more people my age and under are not caring about that stuff and trying to find their own news. This is so important. Thank you for your great work, Gary! I was wondering something. I' Swedish, and in the news the other day I read that the Swedish opposition leader, Magdalena Andersson, said the inflation was because of Putin's war, oil prices, and all that. It made me wonder: why is she deliberately obtuse about the real reasons for the inflation crisis? She was prime minister after all when the country increased its money supply with, as I've read, 30 % in two years during covid. The fiscal decisions during covid were made in broad political agreement, and similarly throughout the western countries. In short, it shouldn't be political tabu to talk about the actual reasons for the inflation crisis, but it seems it is, and across the political spectrum as well. I guess my question really boils down to: why are politicians trying so hard to make people not understand why the inflation crisis is happening? What are they gaining from blaming it all on the war in Ukraine?

So people who've struggled and struggled and "made it" then turn around and say "if I had to struggle like that, then you must too", rather than "Jesus, that should not have been that hard. Hi Gary, I do admire your courage and determination in trying to address these realities. Each of us has two parallel lives, the life we do have and the life we think we have, they are never quite the same all of us suffer from a range of perceptual distortions. We are also severely handicapped by our own emotions, the way we attach our feelings to people and events around us is instinctive and unavoidable, some of us find we can manage to separate ourselves from the delusions of cause and effect, in simple terms being able to understand that feelings provoke awareness and memories provoke feelings, this is a normal biological activity the errors creep in when people start to believe that it is the events and other people that 'cause' the feelings. This sadly leads people down an endless rabbit hole where evidence can be imagined and confirmation found in every crevice, what cannot be found is any direct mechanical connection that is what we normally associate with cause and effect, the most important point being that in actual reality the effect always follows the cause, the mechanisms are consistent and predictable, it is the failure of our feelings to be fully consistent that breaks that chain of logic. This all plays into your main topic which is the ways in which the ideas and concepts that so many people hold dear as 'truth' and certainty are driven by feelings and cannot engage in the style of critical thinking that you recommend. One of the fundamental things that so many people do not understand is that there are many differing styles of regulation, one is directed at punishing offenders one other concentrates more on statutory instruments that make it much harder for people to do things badly. My favourite example of this in action was the type of regulation that the airline industry had to comply with that prevented errors and deaths, that created a level playing field of compliance that made it possible for the cleverest and hardest working in the industry to succeed and lead to the most profitable industry ever created. This system of course is of no use to the get rich quick opportunists that currently rule the roost and one only has to look at what is happening to Boeing now r=to see where that goes. I live in the Southampton area (UK) and we're tripping over homeless people here, old, young, some women, mostly white, but a lot of immigrants who the state have abandoned. I've been told I'm an 'insanely talented writer' but my immediate and ongoing challenge is to keep a roof over my head. I won't be homeless again, it's too f*cking scary and there's no help out there. I'll take other measures. Talking of being called an 'insanely talented writer' (it takes humans decades to learn it in whatever genre/subgenre), content and art driven by AI is going to smash through our societies like a freight train at top speed. People have NO IDEA what's coming or how AI is gonna take away their jobs. I know, I'm an Internet technology graduate. I'm not worried because I know how to use AI tools and I can focus on my subgenres which AI can't write yet, so people ahead of the curve and early adopters have one or two years before it catches up, but the overall effect on society is going to be seismic. The problem is that sites like book-upload sites (for self-publishing) are going to be flooded by regurgitated cr*p AI content and readers/customers are going to be swamped for a while, making it harder for us original concept & genre publishers to get seen. My question is, how will the servers cope? Are the big sites going to provide unlimited server space forever?

@@Account.for.Comment Yeah I know both their backgrounds. I loved the book and the talks they gave. I just found their attitude to taxing rich people to be poorly explained. Do I think taxing the rich will be easy? Hell no. They're fundamentally selfish and will fight back, but to just say its too hard to try is kind of poor. There's a report from the American Congressional budget office on family wealth from 1989 to 2019. When you compare the data from 2007 to 2010 you get the effect of the GFC. When you check the data from 2019 back to 2007 you get the recovery. If you want I'll explain the details. In a nutshell - the people who caused the GFC got hit but they got bailed out and have since made OVER $30 Trillion. Meanwhile the people who DID NOT cause the GFC and got smashed harder than anyone else STILL HAVE NOT YET RECOVERED. The Bottom 50% (165 million people) got smashed and have less combined wealth than they did in 2007 with a combined wealth of $2.3 trillion (2019) compared to the 33 million with a combined wealth of over $90 Trillion (2022 estimate) and smart people like Eric and Mark are saying they can't be taxed more. *THAT'S BULLSHlT*

Gary… you said you’d answer questions, but I’d also welcome being pointed towards a resource of that saves time! 1) In descriptions of the asset economy, you mention we don’t tax wealth properly. But don’t you have to pay tax on all rental income? Or is it the Increases in value you referred to? 2) For us environmentalists, who see a conflict between incite growth and a finite planet… Why is growth necessary? The answer is always “recession” but that’s just another term to define stunted growth. Why does unemployment and poverty result from a failure to increase output versus the previous year/quarter. Why is maintenance not okay? What are the mechanics?

I saw a lot of unity breakdown during the 80s when those who bought their council places started to think they were better than the council Tennant. Now they were torry voters , voting against them (Me) . You even to this day have separate council meeting one specially for the freehold to meet their wants and one for us that ignores our needs..Its the I am better than you syndrome and believe me I've tried to explained that they are really not. Imagine, plan, and finally … act ? I’m a huge fan of Gary’s channel. I particularly like the way that he remains above party politics. By keeping it cleanly about economics, it makes the problem we face much simpler. It is not about taking those traditional sides; of Left party vs. Right party. It is about redesigning a system so that it is fairer and works for, if not absolutely all of us, then at the very least, for the greatest number of us (let’s be realistic). Democracy is in crisis because both Labour and Conservative politicians, far from keeping an effective oppositional ‘check’ on each other, nowadays tend to act in cahoots with each other, both puppets of the billionaire establishment. Yes, they say different things, but if you pay attention to their behaviour then you can see they act the same, delivering the same results, thus removing that critical check so crucial to a progressive democracy. And let’s be clear, the puppet strings all lead to the hands of the billionaires. So we have a sham parliament, full of archaic ceremony, simply going through the motions. Meanwhile, 99% of us get poorer - and 1% get richer. Nice. It’s not just Democracy that is in trouble. The model of Capitalism we have been using for the last 50 years (market capitalism) is also unraveling. It needs urgent reform because it fails to fund the crucial social/health/education ‘safety net’ from which we all emerge every day, to go about our lives, whether we are schoolchildren, working adults or retired pensioners. Gary asked us to leave comments to share ideas about how we can bring about the socioeconomic change that is so desperately needed for our country. The clock is ticking. So here are some thoughts to get discussion going: I’m going to use a learning technique borrowed from the world of counselling to get the ball rolling … so bear with me, as this may sound a bit zen and ‘out there’, but it is a very useful imagination exercise!! So, imagine we could wave a magic wand and make the billionaire elite and all of their corrupt agents (who currently hold the levers of power - the military, the media, the security services, the police and the judiciary) to magically disappear? Just imagine we can magically disappear them all to a limbo-like place, a bit like a ‘green room’ - or into a suspended state, a bit like pressing a pause button on a TV remote? Just imagine that for a second… How would that be? Might it feel a lot better? Probably, for a while. And would that solve all of our problems? Probably not. It would solve them partly. Life would certainly feel less hopeless and more optimistic for most of us. But pretty quickly we would need a new team of people, to run everything more fairly, as a nation. Ordinary people, like you and me, randomly selected like a jury perhaps, every few years, working in a non-corruptible infrastructure, with non-corruptible levers of power. We could pay these people well for their work in office so they never feel the need to defraud the system with huge expenses, or bribery. And it would be more representative, unlike what we have now. The magic wand exercise is helpful here because it shows us that, however attractive it might be to metaphorically ‘cut off the snake’s head’ (some might even think it an intelligent chess move), it isn’t the whole chess match. That ‘win’ - of a fully functioning, truly egalitarian society, needs careful planning too. And, in the absence of a real technological solution even slightly resembling a magic pause button, what process could reasonably and humanely be deployed to redistribute the wealth from these former billionaires and ‘rehabilitate’ them back into society again, as ordinary people? Again, ordinary people - just like the rest of us, who must pay tax, with a wealth ceiling in place that is still generous - but that is the same wealth ceiling attainable by us all, should we want it, in a fairer UK. I’m not a believer in violence or violent political change, so maybe we could develop a process of wealth redistribution that is fair and reasonable. Sure, it will hurt their wallets, but then I would argue you can’t truly own what was never yours to take in the first place. So, what about giving the billionaires this option: 1. Give them the opportunity to spend it all within a set time limit (not on assets) so that the wealth flows back into society and government. Something I know Gary has mentioned before and won’t take 10-20 years to achieve, so all generations benefit pretty quickly. 2. Or … if they refuse this, have all wealth (the actual amount to be determined) confiscated as ill gotten (let’s face it, it was accumulated in a so-called ‘legitimate’ environment with laws made by them, for them - it wasn’t fairly earned by an honest exchange of labour for pay, like the taxable salary of a teacher or nurse (and to be really clear here, like that of a higher earning, higher taxpaying GP, HR Director, IT Consultant, Master Builder or Chartered Accountant)). Unlike the earnings of all these hardworking taxpayers, it was gained through unfair privilege, with little to no taxation levied upon it. 3. Finally, enrol them into a compulsory rehabilitation programme, whereby they have to do work in the community, for the community, e.g. work in hospitals, railways, schools, youth centres, charities, road maintenance, waste, housing, care homes, social work, construction, catering, etc. This work should be aimed at dismantling all the self-serving practices they have previously built as billionaires, and also at creating programmes that help the people of the UK more fairly. I know this all might sound harsh and maybe even punitive to some. Others might not think it harsh enough. I am not up for harming human beings, or discriminating against a certain group - but I think it is ok to prescribe a healthy dose of teaching on this occasion - to educate these people that they are part of society, not above it. There is one more thing that needs to be addressed here. These people didn’t just end up rich for no reason: they are extremely driven and power hungry because they have deeply negative emotional issues. I am going to be ‘therapy joe’ here one more time … but, stick with me. This internal state makes them outwardly seek perfection and superiority. It’s not good for them but, more importantly, it’s really not good for us. In the most extreme cases you get narcissism and sociopathy. Many people in high office, for both public or private sectors, are closet sociopaths or narcissists. They are masters of manipulation and drama. So, whoever deploys the wealth distribution process needs to be aware of this. Therapy usually doesn’t work with these types, because they often don’t recognise or own that they are dysfunctional. So we cannot truly ‘fix’ these people, but we can teach them how to rehabilitate; for our sake, not theirs. Anyway, these are some ideas, to spark discussion. Perhaps someone else can comment on what I’ve said and take this further? How could we bring about the deployment of such a plan? It is challenging but I am optimistic that there is a way. We have so many lessons from history to draw upon which means that we really can develop impressive systems and infrastructure, with non-corruption measures built in. History also shows that the promised land is built on shifting sands and nothing will ever be perfect. But let’s face it, anything is better than what we’ve got now! Is all this too naive? A pipe dream? I hope not. I just think if we can be more honest about our species’ propensity for selfishness and look it squarely in the face, then we stand a good chance of bringing about a better country for us all, whatever our politics.

The problem Gary with uniting the middle and working classes is generally their political and societal views can be vastly different. Remain vs Leave is just one example. Attitudes towards gender, sexuality, politics. Even their hobbies and interests can be quite different so it can often be difficult to identify with and find common ground between these two socials classes. That frustrates building political alliances with each other and ultimately that does play into the hands of the super rich.

I watch Novara Media like you Gary. I come from a very poor background. I never made a lot of money as a builder, but have a share in a rental property which tops up my pension. I'm 69. Its sad to watch some on Novara bessmirch all landlords as the same. The contradictions of life make you have to do things which would not be your first choice in a better world. But I am a believer in unity of working people, so I will continue to watch and support them. Sometimes our social positions may be different, but hopefully we can come together over economic positions. If not, the elites have won by dividing us.

"Tax the rich" is such a simple message and a reasonable demand for those who understand it. Taxing the rich, who have taken over means of production, own the media and push their agenda through laws by lobbying and donations, is the way out of this quagmire. I have two questions please: 1. Could you do an explainer video for why "tax the rich" is not really call for oppression towards the people with exceptional means, who "own" this country, but is a call for justice - economic, political and social justice. 2. Do the super-rich (asset-owning millionaires and billionaires who do not get their income from salary) not understand, that a widening chasm of inequality will eventually and inevitably mean the society's turn towards far right or far left, either of which does not bode well for them and their assets? Hi Gary, I really like the approach you take in this video: i.e. not about hate. The super rich have most of the main levers of power in their pocket: the lawmakers, the central government, the courts, the police, the military, the media, the energy grid, the transport providers, the major employers, etc. They did this to protect themselves as they have all the wealth and are scared of having it taken away. The clock is ticking and no generation wants to wait 20 years for reforms to eventually bring about the healthy balance we need for a better society in the UK. I think the idea you mentioned about giving them a deadline by which they MUST spend wealth (as opposed to taxes) is the quickest, easiest and fairest way to rectify the imbalance in our country. However, we must get all the best heads together to work out a plan on targeting the levers of power so that they are influenced and infiltrated with more representative members of society, because I think we will need their support, in order to achieve this goal of redressing the balance of wealth. I hope that a non-violent solution is possible. We need some incredibly brave people to start unifying and working on a plan of action, because the clock is ticking. Perhaps a general strike should be the non-violent starting point. Would they dare to make the people work at gunpoint? Probably!! But we need to be more like the French because protest works.

My own simplistic view after 66 years on this earth: if you have ever had to work for a living, i.e. in order to have a roof over your head (owned or rented, makes no difference which), keep your family sufficiently fed, clothed, educated, nurtured, cared for, then you are “working class”. Some may earn more than others or “own” more things, but if you have to always work, or have worked, i.e. have a job of some description in order to keep earning the money to pay for it all, then you are working class. The very rich and super rich are in a completely different league. How much money does any person need to accumulate to have a good life?

The simplest thing we can all do is discuss the issues with friends and family. Discuss what you are learning from people like Gary and others. Discuss what it actually means when on the news they say things like Interest rates are rising. Discuss some of the causes of increased bills. Education is the best tool we all have. Even if you as an individual cant make much change if enough get educated we can make a positive difference. At the very least your friends will be a bit more clued up when they go to vote. When discussing these issues its not about you being 100% correct. I will normaly say somthing like "Yeah, bills have been rising, I have been trying to understand why that is. From what I have found so far it appears to be partly down to x,y & z." There have been many instances where my friend has also told me about somthing they have learnt. I have gone away and found they are correct and taught me somthing as well. So just discussing the issues arms us with more knowledge that we can use to make good choices that are within our controle, while also helping us understand things we have no control over.

I'm currently aged 40, no assests, a bit of savings (£10-15k). I rent and can't afford a mortgage. I don't live in London! I earn £25k in the public sector but on a pathway which means next year it'll be £35k, 3 years later it'll be £45k, 5 years later £55-80k. If I go into the private sector, I would be earning £100k+. I'm not bragging or anything, because that's 10 years away, so what I'm wondering is; will my increased earnings across the next 10 years only help to maintain an equilibrium, or will I be able to 'out-earn' the economic decline, and actually get to own property and have something for my child? Serious question: all money channels on here and tiktok (and google to a certain degree) say that you cant retire on a pension alone. And there's no guarantee that your pension will even be there when you need it. So a lot of "successful" people say "invest in property". Now, your channel makes the same point (but from the otherside). But you both basically say "there's a lot of money in property investing". So my question (sorry for the long comment) is: if pensions won't look after us when we want to retire and property isn't possible or the most ethical way to build wealth. Gary, do you think you could put aome visuals together to illustrate how the path we're on economically matches the early 20th century? It might help people realise how were putting ourselves into the situation 1930s germany was put into. Or it might show its not much of a danger. Gary, I really like your channel and I think it adds some good context to what is happening. when you talk about bring people together to make this change, this is issue that is not addressed, noting the traditional route of voting your local politicians and changing parties currently will not work as the vast majority of the politicians are in the rich and wealthy bracket and do not want the change that you identify is required (hence the campaing to redirect the anger). The biggest thing I think your channel can do is identify how we can make this change when the current system will not work. there are others in the comments saying this /offering help.
