If Lewis becomes overtly political then he loses his platform and his ability to help people with the minor details of finance. I agree we need radical change but I can't fault Lewis for not wanting to turn Marxist-that's just not where he personally is most useful. He has saved ordinary people literally billions of pounds especially from bank insurance scams - that's vital work he needs to continue.

Totally agree with this message Gary and I'm glad you're being so frank about the drastic measures needed. It would be great to hear what you think people should be demanding in concrete terms though. One of the major failings of occupy wall st was that they didn't have a clear objective, so if we're going to undertake the same kind of action we need to avoid that pitfall.

I agree with the message. I often hear people say “we need to unite and come together”. I think the reason that doesn’t happen is, it’s really a lot of work. People are already overworked and stressed. Giving up the hours each week it will take to organise outside of political parties is a big ask. But it is necessary. The analogy of a country being invaded is a good one. We have to give up our time and comfort to make things better for everyone. Get involved with your union, join a campaigning group, give actual hours of time every week to a community action group. Then you will start to see things happen.

The fact that this channel only has 8k subscribers is ridiculous, we all need to share and spread the message! I would do anything to enable everyone to come together. I think a huge problem is that everyone’s lives are so busy, they don’t have time to come together, they fear that if they put effort into a group effort then they’ll be the only one to do so, they’ll waste their time and be dragged even further behind. Thing is I'm just a simple guy so where do we start? Do we just gather in a group of friends in public with protest banners? Do we blockade energy sites? Do we march on downing Street and see if we can get them to listen? How do we organise a sensible protest without the govt attempting to portray it as an aggressive protest just to arrest a few of us amd shut us down?

I am so glad you are doing the work you are doing Gary. There are not that many economists that I have seen talking about wealth inequality in the UK. Rising costs of energy prices is just the tip of the iceberg. There have been failures to address housing affordability and stagnant wages. It almost seems as though working does not seem to pay off. Could you do a video on how people could come together to unite for effective change?

Hi Gary I first saw you on Novara Media and really like your way of thinking and expression. I f you and ML and Professor Richard Murphy could get together and help us navigate a way for us all who want to, to come together and effect some useful agency in our daily lives and for the future I would be fascinated and do as much as I could to undertake that. I have written to my (Tory) MP several times, only to get acknowledgment but no meaningful response, signed hundreds of petitions, joined and then left the Labour Party before I was likely excommunicated for my humanitarian views and feel a little helpless and hopeless. I am disabled and therefore limited in my personal agency but I’m sure I could do SOMETHING if I knew what it was! Thanks so much for your work.

Thanks Gary, I thought it would be a hit piece on ML from the title! People are just afraid for their own families and trying to keep our heads above water, it’s not easy to admit we are struggling to peers. It’s so tough trying to keep our kids secure and their childhood as children when the talk on the school run is unpaid bills and rising cost of food. It’s embarrassing bc we thought we were in a position financially to have kids, we planned for that, now those plans seem so nieve. I’ve felt so alone arguing every pound with my utilities company. I wish people would come together, wake up and revolt! I’m ready to protest (when our covid is gone) but what use is it? Everytime in the past people just take the piss, it’s hard to feel motivated when most people think you are an ineffective joke and the media, owned by the super rich, constantly mock protests and poor people and blame us for our situation. Bitcoin and crypto isn’t even a consideration, when you have bills to pay and kids to feed!

I agree Gary, people need to unite to fundamentally stop this drift. In normal times, if you have some money to play with, you can make choices about your finances, but even now the middle classes faces an existential threat to their material well-being. One form of collective resistance is trade unions. I know there are unions out there that aren’t particularly good and there are people who’ve been left unimpressed and ceased being members, but there are also some excellent things unions out there, and excellent branches inside big unions with brilliant reps. Unions were a massive form of collective organisation, strength and resistance in the past, including in the UK. In the 1970s when we had high inflation, unions responded by successfully fighting for higher wages to neutralise its effect. Unions can do the same now. Only last week the first Amazon warehouse was unionised for the first time in the whole of the USA. That’s massive. I’m not neutral in this. I’m a union rep in a city FE college in the UK. If you’re in a workplace and there’s no union, start to find ways to get one off the ground. If there’s a union but it’s not good or barely functioning, get involved. I know there are many ways to come together, but inside your workplace, unions are key. Thanks Gary for the work that you do.

Exactly. I recently commented on one of your videos and said similar things. Ultimately, the problem is capitalism. More specifically, the logic of capitalism that capitalists carry out: ceaseless accumulation and the commodification of everything. We see just how corrupt the system is when the PLP is filled with politicians so willing to do the bidding of capital they colluded to kneecap Corbyn - and he was proposing moderate changes compared to the radical change we actually need. That's why the collective action we need to take can't be done by simply casting a vote. Unfortunately, the problem is not just in the UK. That means we have to be as organized and international as capitalists are in order to challenge them for power. Where it gets even trickier is that people have been cynically politically divided by the rich/corporations and the politicians they buy. We can overcome a lot of that with the correct kind of organizing. But, eventually, real political differences will come to the fore and we will be divided into left and right. In the end, if people support the right we get fascism. If people support the left we get socialism. Historically, neither one of these choices has changed capitalism as the dominant world system. Our task is to replace capitalism with a non-exploitive system that is not based on the logic of capitalism. If we don't, billions of us will become refugees or simply die. Global warming feedback loops are closer to happening than we think. Capitalists caused global warming, and it's clear they have no intention of stopping now. It's them or us.

For too long we have idolized the rich, mainly because the press puts them up there, and sold the idea we could be like them. If we wanted to change things though, you'd need a political party to vote for who are going to put these policies into law. Who would this be, Labour are not that radical.

I looked up how to set up a cooperative for mortgages and loans and it seemed prohibitive to say the least in many ways. Coming back on topic, yes we do need to come together and I understand the barriers. So if that is the objective what are the first steps? That is the key question I think.

Great vid this - You know what I mean (lol) - I find it hard to believe that the people are not rising against this regime which, it looks like, Starmer is only going to follow. I'm living as an economic refugee in Germany now because I couldn't afford to move back to London. I had moved to Asia for work from 2013 and returned in 2019. I couldn't believe that wages had not gone up, starting salaries had actually gone down and rents had doubled in my area. My friend told me, it's not too bad, you could get a room somewhere. A room? I'm nearly 60 and they want me to share? I am now living a 30 minute bike or bus ride from Cologne in a 60m sq two bedroom apartment for 600 euros a month which includes heating and maintenance. That leaves me with around 2000 to spend on what I like. It's not a palace but it's nice and spacious and I can stay in it until I die. Of course I would prefer to be back home in London, but how? Politics is about the exercise of power so being politically aware is one of the basic requirements for a properly functioning democracy.

Yes so true, was always going to be a race to the bottom listening to Lewis... but look how easily the masses lapped it all up, now they're paying the real price for energy, it's starting to hurt, but they never asked who was paying when they were switching utility suppliers every year. I often wondered whether they would partake in the same ideology if the same savings were applied to their yearly salaries year on year, would they work for free after 10 years of so... or would they look for more money elsewhere? May be that as society we need to mature and start accepting paying the true cost of our desires in life, if we constantly want cheap we will soon be on the receiving end, complaining how uncomfortable it has become.🤔

Is not the problem that the two leading parties both want to keep the system as it is. I don't heard any party saying tax wealth they all seem to be saying tax income.

I agree with Gary but what is needed is a specific plan. Tax the rich is a great sentiment but precisely how? Exactly what taxes should be levied, where, and at what rate? Come together is a good call but this needs specifics otherwise it's just waving hands around and hoping for the best.

I agree Gary. It’s like the climate crisis. Individual action by one or even groups of people isn’t going to help climate change. Your “bag for life” you use at the supermarket isn’t changing anything except that you’ve paid for a more expensive but still very much a single use product, the only difference between it at the regular plastic bags being they last a little bit longer in terms of being useful. In the end they still end up as rubbish in land fill. The idea that climate change or the economy can be fixed by the individual or several individuals is farcical.

"Come together"...but practically how? Yes, I understand that we need to get involve more with local and national politics, even if it's by handing out leaflets for the candidates we want in government. And as long as it's still legal, we can stage protests and marches...if applicable, join a union...but anyone else have some creative ideas on how we can "come together?" (Incidentally, there was very little in the news about the protests across this country concerning the high costs of living.)

This message reminds me of the Spartan battle at Thermopylae where Leonidas was able to hold out against overwhelming numbers of Persians because the Persians were funnelled through a narrow gap reducing their advantage of sheer numbers. Another tactic government successfully uses is divide and conquer. Its not rocket science. Unfortunately people fall for it and the government and high net worth individual's profit by it. My take on the greatest weakness of most people is apathy, a resignation to what's presented.

Gary, why can’t we call it what it is? A theft of the nation’s wealth by the richest in society. The reason it’s not thought of as theft is because it’s perfectly legal. Here is another question, who makes all of the laws we follow? The answer, rich people make the laws to guard ‘their’ wealth.

Have to give my respect to Martin Lewis for what he's tried to do with his platform the past number of months, despite himself being a millionaire who could just sit back and milk the gravy train. That said, it's somewhat amusing that he's now stepping down due to family matters. Maybe it's true, but I can't help feeling that certain people no longer had a use for him on their networks.

Quite so, but only a partial explanation . Gary's personalization of economic forces is making it seem that a complex, probably civilizational problem is easily solvable by some sort of mass protest. It is complex, especially so perhaps in a declining and increasingly isolated nation such as the UK. We are a part of, and stuck with a dysfunctional social and economic and political model - change require more than raging against the machine. Gary, is correct that we cannot continue as we are, but reforming society will not happen unless we can, in some real way comet together. The internet, and the bond markets, work off each other, rage at the rich, is digitised and monetised and used to enrich the very banks that Gary deplores. I am sure these mini-essays are well meant - but if we are to have meaningful change, then we need, less polarization not more.
