It's a bit of an overstatement to say that there is a movement to change the flags in Australia. Sure there are people who are trying to change them, but most of them are self-appointed busy bodies, it's not exactly a grass roots movement.

LOL. "most of them are self-appointed busy bodies" Oooh! Name calling! LOL. No bias here. LOL. I wonder what the Australians without their heads stuck up their past have to say about you? LOL.

New Zealand had a referendum to "update" its flag not so long ago. It was defeated. Maybe changing their flag is not seen as "updating" by many people.

A point to note is that Hawaii was never part of the British Empire. The King of Hawaii adopted the flag to celebrate their good relationship with the Royal Navy. It's also speculated that they adopted it as a way to try and ingratiate themselves into the empire.

It’s an interesting history with this flag, that’s for sure.
@martinharnevie5 ай бұрын
Yes. There has also been a Hawaii independence movement at times, with the possibility of later joining the Commonwealth.

It was a defacto Protectorate, Britain ensured no other Empire came along and swallowed it up. Like most of the world in 19C Hawaii was part of Pax Britannica, imperial trade and security, before the US staged a coup and swallowed it up! The British residents and officers of the King's Guard were outnumbered by this stage by US residents who organised their own militia.

I think there was also the story that when they first met, The Hawaiian King saw the flag and asked what it was. The British said it was a symbol of the King (as the King's Colours) so the Hawaiian King adopted it for himself.

Aside from actually having the British ensign on the flag, there are also countries still using the red or blue field of the British ensign design till today. Some countries, such as the flag currently flown in Taiwan, even use that design despite never having been a British colony purely due to the prevalence of that design.
@martinharnevie5 ай бұрын
Perhaps also that Taiwan's constitition has somewhat more similarities to Westminster than the US model. For instance with (1) PM and Head of State (President) as two separate individuals and not the same one and (2) fully independent judiciary.

Very nice! Ontario is a province, not a state. And that Western Ontario petition went nowhere: There is no push in Ontario to scrap the current ensign. Deo gratias!
@canuckguy03135 ай бұрын
Canada has provinces not states. There’s also an occasional call to change the Manitoba flag away from a 🇬🇧 based one as well but neither the ones in the provinces (again, not states) Manitoba or Ontario really get anywhere. (Source: am a Manitoba vexillologist who would like to see my flag changed).
@FlagsinFocus5 ай бұрын
The two flags from Canada I show are labelled as provinces, if I said “states”, my bad. With regards to changing any flag away from a British Ensign to something more local and meaningful, I’m all for that.
@bbcblibberbroadcastingcorp26515 ай бұрын
I don't like the way that the old Canadian Red Ensign, the flags of Manitoba and Ontario as well as the old Australian Red Ensign have been appropriated by the Proud Boys trying to turn back the clock.

I debated whether to include British Columbia but as it didn’t conform to the British ensign flags, I decided to leave it out.

The current BC flag isn’t an ensign flag. The unofficial one from 1906 to 1960 was a blue ensign though, and it looked pretty decent 👍

4:20, Fake News. Iowa’ flag is based on the French Tricolor, Texan flag is the same as the Republic of Texas and Alabama’s and Florida’s flag is based on the Spanish Cross of Burgundy
@FlagsinFocus5 ай бұрын
The point made here in the video is that Hawaii houses a foreign nation flag, while the others that you rightly mention, are based on flags of other national flags, not actually use the foreign national flag (Iowa’s white stripe is larger than the blue and red unlike the French flag, for example).

Really well done Mr P. 🏆 Kevin 🦊 learnt a lot from this one. I agree, Tasmania's flag should have the Tassie Devil... How is it allowed to deface the Union Flag as is done by Nuie 🇳🇺? Also, how do you tell the crowns apart 👑? I didn't know that Victoria flag had St. Edwards crown (thought they were all the same)... A great video 😁

Pass me the comments section, I can't take the ahem bonhomie riding the ocean swell of societal groupthink of I'm right cos I say that I am therefore history's wrong. How many do I have to wade through of the deftly mentioned separate views err videos on this flag and that ?

Clinging to the hope that dispassionate facts and explanations come thick and fast in these other productions. Infantilise with i dunno where it is or tease with islands as stars and East is North. Explanations are desperately deserved by the interested disinterested who've stumbled in to the video. Otherwise it's risking ending up as self-inflatory. Ending in a explosive deflation.
