Who the eff is hank is actually one of the reasons i subscribed to Vlogbrothers back in the day :) (that and giraffe sex) i remember thinking how funny and varied the answers always were, they made me go watch more videos to hear more xD I've always appreciated an inside joke, especially among an online community :) makes me feel like there's a little more depth there than the average online conversation. if Vlogbrothers was Wikipedia, Who the eff is hank was a hyperlink chain for me to follow. its been nearly 10 years since then... This video really made me think back to then... don't get me wrong. I'm not saying your content was better or worse back then, its matured into something beautiful all itself. But sometimes its nice to look back on it all... I'm glad to have grown up with your voices being around these last 10 or so years. the juxtaposition of then and now. the new things I've learned, the nuances of politics or economics that i just didn't care about before, even just the importance of mutual respect and understanding. my dad was never really there to teach me all that stuff, and when he was, he gave really bad advice... so i really appreciate the time and effort you both have put in over the years... I'm a better person because of it

I so missed watching the Wimbly Wombly's. Watching these videos is what made me realize I like football. I thought "I really like watching digital soccer, I bet I would enjoy a real soccer game" lo and behold, I like soccer, and now am a devoted fan of both AFC Wimbledon and Liverpool Football Club, so thank you John, for bringing the love of football into my life

I don't know rlly agree with that. I'm a Star Wars fan and like most fandoms, the Star Wars fandom is infamous for being extremely toxic but like you can never get rid of those kinds of fans. They will inherently be a part of it. A really good joke I read about Star Wars fans goes something like this: I'm not really a star wars fan. I only like Empire Strikes Back, I hate everything else. Star Wars fans: Well that's just being a star wars fan with extra steps.

My favourite thing about "who the eff is hank" is whenever I understood the joke I'd feel part of the crowd, especially how the sun is a mass of incandescent gas (my personal favourite hank) is taken from a TMBG song

I’ve never felt that way about “who the eff is hank?” I haven’t been watching since the very beginning, but I have been for a long ass time and spent a fair bit of time on the outside of a lot of the injokes and had to slowly learn them. Asking who Hank is has always been an eye rolling question for me from the beginning. I understand being new and not knowing stuff. But that question has always been, for me, an example of someone asking something in the comments that is so easily google-able, look in descriptions, or just watch a few videos and you’ll figure it out. I have to admit that I have also never had a hard time telling you apart, so that could definitely play a role, but idk. I always took it as taking a kinda dumb/silly question and answering it in a dumb/silly way. I’m also someone who has always taken inside jokes in fandoms as a challenge where if I hear one and don’t get it I become very determined to become someone who *does* get it. So I totally hear you on weird fandom gatekeeping, but I also see a place for calling out to dedicated fans.

As big a fan as I am of the Brothers Green, it is weird to hear you talk about promoting gate-keeping in your fan community. Literally everybody is a new fan/viewer/listener at some point. Gate-keeping (even if meant in good fun at first) is one of the first steps to a community becoming toxic. I am glad that it seems like these kind of fan-based in jokes are largely kept out of your videos now.

In jokes are great, we just don't want to promote a sort of tribalistic hostility towards new people that some communities have happen. Luckily the emphasis on kindness and complexity here seems to nip that in the bud fairly well.
