@@baldeagle8597 No, cousin marriages were perfectly acceptable. Lysa wanted Sansa to marry Robert, her cousin. Tywin and Johanna were cousins. Paxter Redwyne and Mina Tyrell. In the north there was a Lord Rickard and Lyarra Stark, cousins, so this is also fine. Even an Uncle/Niece marriage was relatively not unheared of, with Alys Karstark's uncle wanting to marry her to secure his claim to Karhold over her brother's. Even Serena Stark and her uncle Edric. And another Sansa Stark and her own uncle Jonnel Stark. It's the brother/sister incest that got the faith riled up at the Targaryens. Cousins were usually fine, but with them being your cousin and everything it was just more likely that you would branch out a bit and make alliances with other houses.

John n Arya were brought up as brother and sisters, so they share a sibling bond of love and care and that feels great between them. If there was a enough time from when they saw each other, it wouldn’t be implausible, considering the social norms of the time. They would have been separated when she was 9. Genetic attraction disorder was probably more common then, since nobody questioned it. When long lost relatives meet again, they often experiences overwhelming feelings of love and attraction, this can led to “romantic” feelings in some people.

Glad he didn't go with this, what I'm not happy with was how they stiffed poor Gendry. Who says the Lord and Lady of Storms End can't be active badasses rather than stagnant pompous nobles? Can you imagine how much the knights and soldiers of the Stormlands would love those two, warriors who would lead them into battle themselves instead of ordering them from the safety their castle? Gendry is not his father, he wouldn't fall into fat drunken complacency and ignorance, Arya wouldn't have it. The people would probably love them just as much as opposed to other houses as they would be more in touch with the common people and also have a sense of responsibility to protect them. I can totally see them even 20 years later, Gentry older but still a warrior built like a tank rocking his hammer and Arya still looking good while sharp and deadly with her skills from the faceless men. One fights and wins the seen battles and the other fights the unseen ones.

I always feel that Gendry's role in the series was never given proper closure. Even if it was just one scene would resolve his relationship with Arya. One the other hand, Gendry and Arya getting married would actually subvert expectations that GoT is supposed to be known for. Arya, a tomboyish assassin surrounded by death and obsessed with revenge after losing her family, would embrace life with Gendry and start their own family.

…until she got stabbed by the waif; blatant plot armor and girl boss vibes afterwards (other characters have suffered from lesser wounds and have died from them; there is no reason why Arya should’ve been alive after the waif attack). Given that her new name in the books is going to be Mercy, I can’t help but think she’s going to kill as an act of mercy instead of vengeance (maybe Stoneheart). I think the Freys are still going to die in the books but they’ll be all over the place; a civil war is brewing in their ranks; while a Lannister/Frey wedding’s taking place at Riverrun, Stoneheart and the Brotherhood will reclaim her birthright; and Walder himself will drown in his palanquin (referring to how Ser Duncan wished someone had dropped Walder down a well in the Dunc and Egg story). Petyr needs to die by Stoneheart’s hands/order; it would be fitting considering the hell he put her through. Sansa will strip him of the power he’s cultivated and leave him with no choice but to leave Westeros. I personally think she’ll kill him herself with the dagger meant for Bran. The Night King, or whoever leads the Others, needs to be Jon’s fight; Arya can fight against one of the horsemen while struggling with her identity as a Stark/girl/child. The Hardhome encounter is one of the bests in the show and D&D teased the Jon/Night King fight so much, they ended up blue-balling us.

ADWD tells us a different story GRRM seems to have Jon dying for Arya and having Jon’s last thought be “Stick them with the pointy end.” Now with that in mind anything could happen. Especially if he gets resurrected again, we all know what happens to someone after their last thought in ASOIAF, they become obsessed with their last thought before dying. I could understand if he stopped hitting us over the head with how much they think of each other and want to see each other again so desperately. But it must lead to something why else would he remind the reader so much? Also Jon reacting to the phrase “I want my bride back x3” in his head doesn’t sound like pure evidence that he has dropped this Pairing. Plus this wouldn’t be the first time he has put two young characters together Jaehaerys married Alysanne when she was 12, this is acceptable in the world George has built. Also this is what George says about finishing the books “As I write these last two books I’ll be moving towards the endings that I’ve known since 1991.” No one can say “he’s abandoned that idea.” Because there are still two books left and not much evidence of him abandoning it. If you read both Jon & Arya’s povs you will see what I mean, I can understand why some are uncomfortable with these two characters possibly being a thing because of the high budget fanfic TV show and you only view the Actors who portray these characters but that’s not how George sees it at all, And will most likely continue with what he had in mind from the beginning. Arya clearly is George’s favourite female character, there is no doubt about that he wanted his 2 favourite male characters to fight over her she seems to be Lyanna Stark come again. That seems to be what he was going for. Also I can sense that when Jon and Arya get to each other again they won’t recognise one another because of how much they have both changed from the trauma they both have endured. Sorry for ranting just thought I would write my full opinion on these two and what George seems to have built so far.

Not only this, but Arya and Jons arcs are beginning to merge into one another. By the end of ADWD Jon has been murderd by his Black Brothers and Arya is halfway through her Faceless Man training. GRRM hints at their reunion in one of Arya’s chapters: “…he sang about some stupid lady throwing herself off some stupid tower because her stupid prince was dead. The lady should go kill the ones who killed her prince.”- Arya Stark

I guess that’s one thing Season 8 did that was good. Arya and Jon’s endings were so good. Well at least Arya’s was. I STILL TO THIS DAY SAY THAT ARYA DESERVES A SPIN OFF SHOW FOLLOWING HER AS THE FOCAL CHARACTER with of course other main characters but her being the driving force of the show. I mean a pirate shape shifting assassins sailing across the world to lands we have yet to discover. Just seems like an show with endless dope possibilities.

FYI, the ages George was imagining for the characters like up with the actors in the show. He just didnt have kids and was unfamiliar with what age was what, but this is what he was aiming for

It would have been more believable and interesting for the show, had Arya been at Winterfell with the Boltons. She could have been positioned as a potential assasin to Roose and Ramsay and also acted as a spy. Better that, than the less believable infiltration of house Frey that we got in the show.

It’s interesting to compare large fantasy works like this in regards to their drafts/final product. I know grrm is kind of regretting donating them but it is gonna be something of academic interest. Reading some of tolkiens letters and drafts, you get a great sense of the author. It’s something I wish Frank Herbert’s estate did better (instead of writing weird quasi fan fiction).

FYI. To all those commenting on how creepy it is for first cousins to marry, it was never considered incest. It was fairly common up to the 19th century for first cousins to marry. Once genetics were understood and the passing on of negative traits, those marriages became unacceptable. In the era in which GoT takes place, such a marriage would have no stigma.
