Who Was Socrates?

Who was Socrates? When did Socrates live? Why is Socrates famous? Socrates is one of the central figures of western philosophy. We know about him primarily from Plato who wrote numerous dialogues about Socrates teaching and about Socrates' trial and death in ancient Athens.

This is oversimplification. He had an admirer who was Alcibiades who was hugely destructive for Athens in Peloponnesian was , and after the loss pf Athens in the war he had among his stufents 2 put of the 30 Athenian oligarchs that Sparta imposed on athens after stopping the Athenian democracy. Therefore among other things a certain part of Athebs was not sure what his relationship with Oligarchy was. Socrates would say that he would not deny to anyone access to his free teachings and so anyone could attend, the Oligarchs among the “30” also. Of course he also had multiple admirers and atudents and one/some organised a plot to get him out and not drink the poison but he refused and drank the poison willingly. Bear in mind hat also Socrates was a war hero and had a medal of honor from battle.

Well he usually wasn’t talking to random people. He was often talking to poets about what they thought beauty was, for example, or to teachers about what they understood knowledge to be. The lesson, in part, is that many people who present themselves as experts haven’t thought enough about the subjects they’ve supposedly mastered.
