Comparing Barbrady to Yates is kind of like comparing Elmer Fudd to Yosemite Sam. They’re both incompetent and stupid police officers, but Yates is more intelligent and malicious, making him more destructive and a worse menace to society. Barbrady is just a simple minded oaf that if he weren’t given a badge and a gun he wouldn’t be so bad. Because of that tho, Yates is much funnier imo

I think a few episodes have hinted that officer Barbrady may have gotten his job back only because in a few cameos, he’s back in his police uniform unless this is just Trey and Matt, not wanting to create a new model

Who is the better officer? Both are incompetent, Yates needed days to figure out that the hand was flipped, while Barbrady would not even draw that conclusion, sooo I guess Yates... From a personality standpoint I love both of them, Barbrady is better for short joke gags while Yates works much better in long form content like the Butters Pimp episode or the Jeffersons episode. I also appreciate how later season South Park gave Barbrady more personality by showing his shity life and his heartfelt relationship with his sick dogy! This episode made me almost cry 💔😢

Honestly, I think Barbrady might actually be a little SMARTER than Yates, given that he's had a surprising number of successes at his job (the video forgot to mention him arresting a pharmacist for selling drugs to minors in "Quest For Ratings"), while Yates' only real success was in "Butters' Bottom Bitch", but even then, the whole situation was completely ridiculous and took him over a year.

I think they could've made them a duo, with Officer Barbrady being Harrison Yates' sidekick and constantly unintentionally foiling his plans with his sheer stupidity. Kinda like Nathan and Mimsy, the difference being that Nathan is intelligent while Barbrady and Yates are both total idiots. It would be like "the blind leading the blind."

Man, you missed out. The Bookmobile was real, and it was awesome. Most school libraries had a decent stock, but it was old stuff, and they didn't have the room or budget to get a lot of new stuff in. That's the gap the Bookmobile mostly filled, for districts that could run one. It went around to all the school and doubled as a roaming library with stuff not on the school shelves, and it was a method of sale handled by parents with a form, for kids who were collectors rather than just borrowers, which helped them clear out stock and fund the enterprise, I assume. If you were borrowing, you'd usually just return them the next time the Bookmobile came to your school, which would probably be two weeks or a month. Very helpful before the invention of the handheld gaming console, let alone the cell phone.

33:54 I might be wrong about this being the reason, but in the old days, we're talking like early- to mid-1900's or maybe even further back, there was pretty bad prejudice against Irish immigrants in the United States. They were treated as a minority all across the nation, being beaten, spit on, insulted, refused service, refused jobs, etc, based on the fact that they came from Ireland. Pretty much the only job that would hire them was the police force, so it was a common thing back then to see entire police departments with nothing but Irish Immigrants and their children. That's the reason why Commissioner Gordon was Irish in the Adam West Batman series, and I'm guessing that's why Mrs. Yates is Irish, because I would hazard a guess Yates himself was intended to also be Irish as well, but they just didn't commit to that for whatever reason. Anyway, that's my guess.

I say keep both, but use them for the opposite purpose. Use Yates for the silly crap and Barbrady for the serious, real police work. And occasionally have Yates have to handle something big and serious and he's so used to handling the boring, unimportant stuff now that he forgets how to cop and has to ask Barbrady for help. Or something like that. But also have that if Barbrady ever takes over the stupid stuff - he's just as good at it as before. Might be a fun dynamic - especially since the world of South Park is bizarre enough that it could make sense that a "Good, smart cop" [and I mean good at being the kind of cop he claims to be, not a good person] would be totally lost and seemingly incompetent. [Yes I know he's actually incompetent but still - might be a fun way to use both in the future]

I'd argue that Harrison Yates is actually even stupider than Officer Barbrady, given that Officer Barbrady has actually succeeded at his job several times, while Harrison Yates only succeeded once in "Butters' Bottom Bitch", but even then it took a year of him goofing off to get there.

Barbrady actually got less stupid as the show went on (as subtle as the change might have been since he's only been a background character since like season 7) and he is not as incompetent as he used to be. Though I think Yates has been shown doing his job before too but I wouldn't remember since I don't pay much attention to him specifically that much, but indeed, he is stupid.
