Cole's last album (The Fall Off) has the potential to be 'classic' material, considering he's been namedropping it for YEARS, even including the name in the last track of his 2018 album, which is something I've never seen before. I also assume he's reserving some of his best work (beat selection, verses etc.) for this album, and with enough refining I think he can drop an amazing album, he's only been getting better these past few years.

2024 seems to be shaping up to be an amazing year for hip hop - Kanye album(s?), ASAP Rocky album, probably a JCole album and apparently Logic is gonna release Ultra 85, amongst plenty of other releases. I definitely think were gonna see atleast one classic album this year. I agree with the idea that the newer class of artists is less likely to drop a classic but theres always people like Denzel Curry and JID, etc. who definitely have shown promise and I would say are more than capable of dropping an album that ends up being a classic - its just a matter of said project having the longevity Theres so many established acts aswell capable that didnt get mentioned but I think it goes without saying that someone like an Eminem, a Lil Wayne, or a JayZ could drop an album that ends up being a classic just on the basis of it living up to the reputations they have earnt over their careers. I would argue that longevity and replay value are on par with quality when it comes to if an album is a classic, then general consensus, and things like a roll out could definitely come into play. Donda for example probably wouldnt be anywhere near as significant of a release if the roll out never happened with the delays, the listening parties, etc.

Great video as always, but I don't like Ant's argument of separating Kanye the person with Kanye the musician on this argument. The artist itself is an indication of how the music is gonna be. An album like TCD works because how it translates the hunger of Kanye at the time, and the working class 9-5 perspective. Backpack Kanye music only exists because that's who he was. The same can be said anout MBDTF, the album works because it's a direct answer to the controversies Kanye the person was going through Kanye at this point, no matter how good the flows and production will be, need to correlate with the person he is at this point. And the last thing I wanna listen is music made by the Kanye he is now

I don’t actually think J Cole is an obvious pick for a classic. If you look at his form when it comes to albums I feel he’s always fell short. FHD and TOS are both great albums but everything else in my opinion has been a bit underwhelming. He’s a great overall artist, does everything well but there’s no area he’s the best in when compared to his contemporaries. He has quite a traditional style/delivery (which I find refreshing in the current mainstream landscape) but I think this makes it harder for him to be innovative and have an influential sound. Looking forward to The Fall Off anyway, I’ve been following J Cole since The Warm Up so hope this album delivers!

At this point he doesn’t seemed motivated to do so. He’s been in the game for over a decade now and has clearly split his focus professionally. I could see it happening but it’s not gonna in the next year or two.

@@MrASAPAB It checks all the boxes for a classic. It's been over 5 years, it was biggest rap album of 2017, all songs charted, it had a anthem hit on there, it had substance and timeless songs, it appealed to the masses, the underground, and OGs of Hip Hop, nothing sounds like, especially after it, it won a pulizer prize, first rap album to do so, and won the Grammy for best rap album of 2017, AND it's still being talked about to this day, alot of albums from 2017 don't get talked about.
