@@SilharaTheChosen Yeah no I understand, I was referring to how Koko the gorilla was the most popular example of a primate "learning" language, i.e. Properly understanding grammar and syntax, being able to make new words from old ones, and using environmental/context clues to understand new concepts. All of these claims were made about Koko, and all of them were debunked. The researcher who cared for Koko has been discredited for both her scientific research and her unethical treatment of the primates in her care. Koko was incredibly smart, and like other intelligent animals was able to learn and grow with her environment, and so she learned how to act in order to make her trainers happy and then the researcher in charge fudged what she wanted to see into her papers. Koko was and is the poster girl for the idea of the "intelligent primate" that humans really latch onto, and she's part of the reason why primates are perceived as so intelligent in the modern world. Not to downplay their intelligence, mind you, just that I often see the misinformation about primates still spread around, and I like to do my due diligence and ensure everyone is aware. We love Koko here, we love primates here, but we also keep people educates about them here as well. P.S. Bear solos Gorilla everyfime, it's so fucking clear that Coney has never spent any significant amount of time in bear country lol

Im convinced the main reason this debate has persisted for so long is because Gorillas walk in an almost upright posture. It makes them appear larger and heavier than they actually are, if you ask people if a Gorilla or Tiger is bigger for example, the answers are gonna be somewhat split, when in fact Tigers are over 100kg heavier. This debate would end the instance people saw an upright standing Grizzly next to a Gorilla. Ironically its the same reason a lot of predators get tricked by us humans, not only because we arent their usual prey but also because humans appear way bigger than their weight would suggest. Cougars weigh about as much as we do, but the height of their heads barely reaches most peoples hips.
@NeutralGuyDoubleZero9 күн бұрын
It's even simpler than that. We relate to gorilla's far more and see some of ourselves in them. So when there's a big gorilla with giant visible muscles people assume it's so much more powerful than anything else because it's like us but way stronger.

@@jacosalvatore7399 I was comparing Tigers to Gorillas. Most people do know Gorillas weigh less than Grizzlies, i just don't think they realize how big the difference actually is. And setting a comparison to an Animal a lot of people would assume is about equal, can help them visualize the effects that upright posture has on perceived mass. A Grizzly is basically just a big ass Tiger in regards to posture, so once you realize even Tigers are 100kg heavier than Gorillas, it sets in just how much more massive Grizzlies are.
@PigeonOfTheAbyss8 күн бұрын
@@NeutralGuyDoubleZero Also valid. I bet it also has to do with the fact you can actually see their muscles. Bears hide that stuff under a mass of fur and fat, so they seem less muscular to us. Same with Tigers, the only difference being that in certain poses you can see their muscles and they make Gorillas look like twigs.

You know, as silly as Coney is, the hand point he makes has a small bit of validity to it. Gorillas are clever and dont like to commit to an all in with anything, much less something larger than it. While a bear is very likely to tank most blows and deal gnarly damage with its claws, there is certainly a world where a strong enough gorilla can grab and pull the leg out from under the bear. This is a strategy they use with lots of different creatures, somewhat of a hit and run. Given enough tries, its not that a gorilla cant beat a bear, but more so that it wont try. A single bear is designed to protect their cubs. Gorillas use stealth to ambush their enemies. One loud guy is a signal to the rest of them to either run or pull up and fight. A more accurate fight between these creatures would be a family of bears vs a small troop of Gorillas in the same small area. the group dynamics play much more into both creatures forte, and would make for a more realistic and interesting piece.
@Fro00ot08 күн бұрын
Yeah the given enough tries part rings true. A gorilla could probably win 5-10% of the time if it lands good hits, but odds are it's done. What I think could be more interesting is 10 gorillas vs 10 bears. Thats where I think it could even be in the gorilla's favor, since they pull up on you and jump your ass. Meanwhile bears don't have any kind of social structure like that at all.

European animal experimentation laws extend to all vertebrates plus squid/octopi. This is under the ASSUMPTION that, for example, fish can experience pain and/or suffering. As chat said, I don't think we can know for sure other than to measure brain waves confirming that something is going on, we just can't know how they experience that. Source: I'm a biologist in Europe, and we had to go through trouble for experiments on fish while everything invertebrate doesn't need any paperwork at all.

9:30 Yes fish can feel pain and respond to the stimuli. Many fish are also capable of remembering human caretakers in aquariums. Feeling pain is probably true for longer lived insects who need to care for their body but it is not true for worker ants. Some species of ants have workers and soldiers that do not feel pain when limbs are ripped off. They are still probably aware of damage to their body I imagine. Just more like the Terminator realizing a part has been damaged lol.

In case anyone is wondering, scientific consensus is broadly that yes, fish do feel pain. They don’t have the same brain structure as mammalians, but have a CNS, brains, and pain receptors as well as displaying similar reactions to mammals with Altered reactions under pain, reactions to painkillers, and pain avoidance behaviors. Evolutionarily, it also doesn’t make sense for them to not feel pain for the same reasons that mammals have evolved the same. Overall, they show the physical distress, so questions about what we consider to be pain gets into the question of animal consciousness in the first place, and especially our perspectives with non mammalian animals. In light of all this though, it should very much be considered with both our fishing and aquarium scenes, since the answer is far more than a simple “No” as structure arguments are reductionist mindset.
