The Cameron vs Mackintosh feud is one of the most infamous and long-lasting feuds in Scottish history. Who won? Well, that depends on what perspective you take. As a Cameron (my dad) / Campbell (my mom) hybrid, we love to feud 🤣.. I grew up with the stories of the feud and if I remember grandpa correctly there was a truce in the middle of the feud and some type of party or get together. All was well, until a Cameron said the Mackintosh Chief's wife looked like a pregnant cow and all hell broke loose. Thank you for sharing this history. It keeps the colorful history alive. I could go on for hours about the Campbell & Macdonald feud and what Alasdair Mac Colla Chiotaich MacDhòmhnaill did to the town of Inveraray, Inveraray and Argyll.

Well the last chapter in this saga is the Cameron eventually did pay for the land and it almost bankrupted them. They also had to lend it from the Campbells which had huge implications as well. Did you miss the Battle of the North Inch of 1396? The king had enough of the feuding and demanded a single fight to end it all. 30 Cameron's vs 30 Mackintosh's.

From what I’ve found in my research the mackintosh’s won killing all but 1 of the Cameron’s. The mackintosh’s lost 19 men

You missed a aspect of the final outcome: financial. The Camerons had to pay the required compensation the Privy Council instructed. They didnt have the sum of 72000 Merks and had to loan it from the Duke of Argyll. It came with exhorbitant interest and other conditions such as acnowledging him as their lord. They took almost 80 years to pay the debt off. So doesnt feel like they won on that score.

I'm a Taylor a sept of Clan Cameron and as told here one of the most interesting clan characters was "Taillear dubh na tuaighe" black Taylor of the axe, Donald Cameron bastard son of Ewen Cameron 14th chief of the clan. his mother was the daughter of a chief of clan MacDougall, The man was a formidable warrior with the Lochaber axe "tuagh-chatha" and he killed Mackintosh of Mackintosh the 15th chief of the clan. Awesome. I have ties to clan MacPhail but I know MacPhail was a sept of Clan Cameron so I don’t know if after some of these battles MacPhail joined with Cameron or some information isn’t correct.

Hi William. MacPhails are found with Camerons and Chattan/Mackintoshs. MacPhails are of the "old blood" of Chattan and originally from areas around Fort William. It appears when the heiress of Chattan married into Mackintosh, she moved with the majority of her people to Mackintosh land. Not all MacPhails went with her. That is why the MacPhails that remained in the old lands accepted Cameron as their new clan, whilst the MacPhails that went with Eva accepted Mackintosh as their new chief. Eventually you may have had MacPhails on both sides of the feud. My family eventually modernised their surname to Paul so I'm also a MacPhail. There is a Wikipedia article on Clan MacPhail, look it up for more info.

Clan McIntosh also lost to the combined forces of Clan Grant and Clan Gregor in 1690. The feud came about when Clan McIntosh built a mill, to power their mill they diverted Clan Grant's water supply to power a water wheel. Clan Grant called upon their kinsfolk Clan Gregor to help them sort out the McIntosh's. Rob Roy MacGregor raised a force of his clan and they travelled one hundred miles north east to Speyside to help the Grant's. After the McIntosh's had been defeated, Clan Gregor men raised the mill to the ground, Rob Roy's piper composed the tune "The Burning of the Black Mill" as a celebration of their victory against Clan McIntosh. Rob left two runners in Speyside to raise the alarm if the Grant's were ever troubled by the McIntosh's again, they never were needed. I am descended from one of Rob Roy's planted runners in Speyside, I was born in Dufftown, Banffshire, my paternal grandmother was a Cameron.

the battle of invernahavon may have been a victory for Mackintosh, but the real losers were ckan Davidson who lost thier clan chief and were destroyed as a fighting force.....My grandad told me stories of this and how the Davidsons had hard times from all the losses of our men.

IMO neither clan won - they all lost; for, much fighting among the various clans only weakened the overall strength of Scotland's population - to the point of the English eventually taking over completely & dismantling the clan system as it once existed.
