The MacGregor's the MacKinnon's and the Mackenzie's were fighting in the Battle of Littleferry in Sutherland the day before the Battle of Culloden, that's why most of whose three clans were missing from Culloden. Prince Charles Edward Stuart's personal piper at Culloden was a MacGregor. One must remember that Clan Gregor was still living under proscription in 1746, the proscription against Clan Gregor was finally repealed by King George III in 1774.

My ancestors were a sept of Farquharson. The history we were told is that there were brothers that were traveling to the battlefield but showed up too late as the fighting was already over. They were taken prisoner but soon released. Afterwards they made plans to travel to the New World.

Its great you have the family knowledge, many men didnt make the battle for many reasons either from being separated from the army during a failed night raid the night before or from fighting elsewhere, would they have made a difference, we will never know, although we must remember at the time the clans didnt see the defeat as anything significant, they had plans to form up and regroup.

Grant here, from America far as my family goes, our ancestors were forced in to slavery in the Caribbean some were then made it to Virginia and migrated north to Kentucky then to Michigan via my father. We may have lost the battle, but we survive

I was born and raised in the central belt, lowland, Scotland and my dad said we might not be Scottish but actually from mainland Europe. I believed my whole life I was only 3 generations Scottish on my paternal side, I used to tell everyone that I was really not that Scottish but turns out it was actually a misunderstanding in the origin of his mother's last name, it was indeed Scottish last name. I can actually trace most of my paternal grandparents family back to the Highlands clearances and the Battle of Culloden. 😅🤣🤣 So after thinking I had some foreign blood in me, it turns out I am 100% Scottish on my father's side. LOL.

This video is just of the clans whose chiefs fought at the battle, although a handful of MacInnes did fight the army consisted of roughly 7000 men i couldn't name every one who fought in the battle, so in the mentions i only mentioned names if they appeared in large numbers, This is only a part 1 aswell so they may make an appearance in part 2.

My Grandfather is McClish(moms father) and I have info regarding his family being part of the MacPherson Clan Cluny. We have documents in our family site about them coming to America ( well my grandfather's line of descent ) He did speak of Ulster Scots in Northern Ireland from what he knew, and placing our first male McClish here in early 1700's possibly in Maryland , his first name is James , but still researching this , reading this and watching these videos , I always like to see the surname MacCliesh/McCliesh/ McClish many variants. My grandfathers McClish males line just as he was in the military ( U.S. Navy late 1930's) they were all in military of many branches as well. His parents were McClish/Merchant . To add a little more here on the many surnames I see many relations throughout most listed , with some a larger family connection then others . His McClish family is from Ohio/ Indiana. Love these youtube videos , very informative.

We are travelling to Scotland late Oct-early Nov 2023. Interesting video. I have an ancestor Sir Francis Attebury that was involved in supporting the 1745 uprising. He was sent to the Tower then exiled to France where he died & was buried in Westminster Abbey (I saw his grave it was near the Unkown Warrior.}. Have you any info on him or know of him? Seems to be more Scott's fighting on the government side, my clan fought on both sides. However the ones on the Princes side seemed to have been forced. After this they went to the US or fought with the British. They were at Waterloo. Gordon's and Macdonalds

Were there known to be any of Clan Douglas/Douglass at Culloden? I can only find mention of “very few” from the clan at the battle, but no mention of whom was there nor why the clan was not represented in the cause, either on the behalf of the King or the Jacobites. Would also love for you to do a video specifically on Clan Douglas/Douglass as it is one of the oldest, most powerful and influential clans of Scotland. I enjoy reading about my ancestors connection to Robert the Bruce and would enjoy your take on it. :)

There were a handful but they were not supported by any chiefs or landed members of the clan, "No quarter given" by Allistar livingstone is one of the more complete muster rolls of the jacobite forces, i know there are Douglas members mentioned but as i said its only like 5 or 6. I do intend to do a full video on the clan its my hope to do all Irish and Scottish families i will cover major events including the Scottish war of independence and the battle of Bonnuckburn.

As per yoosh, my 6 x great grand da Sir Robert Kirkpatrick gets the short end of the stick. The only member of the clan with the Balls to rise to the challenge and one who was beheaded for his trouble. Often overlooked, (not because he's headless) Sir Robert was the clans sacrificial recruit. As many clans would send a son to fight on the other side in case of failure as a way to secure their lands and holdings if the war was lost.

Yes and no, No irish clans fought here, the clan system in Ireland had all but been eradicated, The very few irish Gaelic familes to still hold power (O'Briens ect) had abandoned the clan system, But there were Irish during the rising a regiment made up of irishmen in the government forces and another within the Jacobite forces, infact the Irish regiment (jacobite) are said to have impressed everyone as they "fell back in good order" basically allowing the rest of the army to retreat (they wernt the only ones, it wasnt seen as a retreat at the time more as a regroup) i will probably do a video on them soon after ive done the Government video.

I'm trying to find some history of Clan Crow or Clan Crowe. All I have found is that we are part of Clan Ross. I know we had people from The Isle of Mann and have heard we had people from England, Ireland and Scotland. Thank you for any help. My natural father told us that we were Native American Indian and Irish, now that we are grown some of the family has used DNA and we turn out to not be Native American Indian we are traced back to Sir William Crow of the Isle of Mann and 38% Scottish with Irish and English blood as well. My stepfather adopted me and my name was changed from Donald Randolph Crow to John Randolph Forsythe. Both my natural and stepfather have been dead for years now and I'm 67 years old, I just want to know where my natural family blood line is from so I can know for sure and be proud of being Scottish, Irish, or English

You mentioned DNA, which I'm gathering is autosomal DNA? This will not tell you which line you descend from you would need to do FTDNA for a better understanding of your paternal line.

Wasnt John Nesbit a converter in the late 17th century ? And there is no difference really its just how who ever recorded the names spelt it, some branchs drop the Mc altogether and some just place a M' its really just the clerk perogative at the time back then.

The Forbes clan was a huge force in the jacobite revolution. Even though lord Duncan chose to fight for the government, he did it to save the clan from being disbanded when the government wins and also Culloden is and was on Forbes land, lord Duncan Forbes buried the fallen men there.

can I ask my family have both Irish and Scots heritage and I wonder if we were involved in the uprising at all and on what side, my family name is McCann , and where about in Scotland were the McCann's were and how involved were the McCann's at the time , I know my immediate line is Irish but I trace a family link to Scotland in the 1745 rebellion. An excellent video! A few simplifications but it's not a one hour documentary after all. Some pronunciations are incorrect, eg in Chattan, the 'ch' is pronounced in the Gaelic way, as in 'loch'. The McDonnells and MacDonalds both consist of various branches of Clan Donald and are really the same name, , both spellings being English approximations (the forner one being a reversion closer to the Gaelic for BOTH names, MacDhòmhnuill or MacDhómhnuill - the accent changing historically and between Irish and Scots Gaelic).

Oh, and the Ogilvy or Ogilvie Regiment (two battalions) was a Lowland unit raised in Forfar in Angus, uniformed in specific red-based tartans (unlike Highland units which, in the Jacobite Army, were not uniforned - clan tartans being a myth!), and trained to fight in the European fashion. The name is not O'GILvy or O'GILvie in pronunciation (it's not Irish, or even Scots Gaelic), but Ogilvy, from the 'Pictish' or early Welsh: 'Ugl ma', High place.

Oh, and 'Menzies' is pronounced 'Mengies', Mingies', or 'Meenies', depending on dialect. There is no 'Z' in Scots or Scots Gaelic. What looks like a 'z' in old Scots script is a 'g' which features alongside an 'n'. Just saying 😉

Similarly, Dalziel is pronounced 'Daylyel'; Cockenzie is pronounced 'Cockinnie', and MacKenzie is more correctly 'MacKinnie' or 'MacKenny'......the Scots relatives of the Irish MacKennas!

The MacDougall clan chief didnt take part in the rising of 45* his brother did but this video was just about the clans whose chiefs joined the jacobite forces, a large number of macdougalls did join the jacobite forces, which is why they are mentioned in the list at the end of the video.

I was always under the assumption Powell was Welsh and came across with Welsh soldiers and settlers to ireland in the 16th century, Although there is talk it could also be an anglicised version of MacGiollaphoil (Guilfoyle) from Offaly i believe, i havent researched that line yet though. But the Guilfoyle are on my rader so when i get round to them i will let you know if that theory stands.

No criticism, you might want to read Murray Pittock’s book on Culloden You do need to work on your pronunciation of some of the names as I had to listen twice. Also Lord George …I’d do a bit more research there as many of the things surrounding him are being questioned today. Just always bear in mind there are many many long standing myths on that battle and surrounding the Jacobites in full. Some grew from propaganda at the time and grew from there, some are 19th cent and early 20th cent inventions, You did point out many and dispel them which is good. A time which is very complex and has many myths and untruths surrounding same.

Thank you very much for the comment, i really appreciate it, with regards to the names of some clans, il admit some of these names i had only ever read about and never heard or i had heard modern translations in countries like America where linguistic changes have changed the sound, although upon closer inspection these actually seem to be in the minority of cases, i am now in talks with mulitple societies so that this doesnt happen again, i will check out that book thank you for the suggestion, i do intend to do a video on the Clans/Families that fought for the Government forces hopefully this will give people enough information to either have an informed discussion on this sensitive subject or help dispel myths on both sides.

@@Clans_Dynasties sir you make a very very good and Highly important point ….The whole area surrounding Jacobitism and the battle at Culloden needs to be discussed and understood. It many ways the movement and the battle esp were pivotal points in not just the UK but to the whole world and that may sound very impertinent to say, esp as the battle lasted only around an hour or less, it did however. There are so many myths that do need to be quashed and the actual events understood. The vid you say that you are considering is also important for many reasons. In my own small way I try to help anyone like yourself that tries to put out content that tries to inform and not inflame. Until recently when the period has started to be properly looked into and researched so many myths have become accepted fact. The Clans, Jacobitism and Culloden mean so much to many esp over the seas that we need to get it right or as right as we can and also as research moves forward then have the guts to say things have changed as more comes to light. Roderick Macleod, 2nd of Cadboll, ================================================= fought for Prince Charlie at Culloden in the Glengarry Regiment, and was exiled afterwards, though he made peace eventually. My great-grandmother was a Macleod of Cadboll, and although I was born in South Devon, I only had to hear the skirl of the pipes to raise my blood. Had government not been screwing landed estates, I would very likely have gone to Sandhurst, for my youthful ambition was the Black Watch. So sad to see Scotland hamstrung by rabid marxists. Though England is little better. .

The McColl clan did attend in large numbers and they are mentioned here but the Chief of the clan either was not in attendance or did not hold the rank of an officer which is why they are just mentioned, i will be doing all the family histories eventually though.

I find it interesting that most Scottish historians on KZbin keep referring to "government forces"... let's call it what it was. It was the Brits. I don't care if there were Welsh, English or Irish brigades, regiments, or sections, this was the Brits, plain and simple. But, in the centuries following and the Act of Union, I can see softening of the language used. It just all sounds so politically correct.

British means people from Britain, so that includes everyone from Cornwall to Caithness. The rising was in support of the pretender to the British crown.

Well... it wasn't though. 2 of the 3 cavalry brigades were Hanovarians. The government artillery was Hanovarian. Atleast 1 regiment of foot was from the low countries (probably Flemish) and that's not even mentioning the English or French units in the Jacobite army. After all the only reason the army marched to Derby was to gather English Jacobites.

The reason many historians refer to the 'Government' forces as such, is that it is more correct than 'British'. After 1707 the Scottish (military) Establishment was disbanded and the Scottish regiments renamed as North British regiments, absorbed into the ENGLISH Army. It was officially known as such until the 1850s. This however was an administrative name because the army headquarters remained in the English Army offices at 'Horseguards' in London. So as not to give the impression that the post-Union risings of 1708, 1715, 1719, & 1745 perpetuated the myth of Scotland versus England (despite being anti-Union risings as well as dynastic), historians often refer to 'Government' forces, although many refer retrospectively, and incorrectly, to 'British' forces when contemporaneously they were in fact refered to as English. Btw, for the first 200 years of the Union, Scotland was officially known as North Britain, a neat way of denying our existence!

Enjoyed your video..but I remember when I was at school 50 years ago I had a teacher from the Highlands , a Mrs Menzies..but she taught us immediately that her name in not pronounced Men-zies ! You are meant to pronounce it...Ming us...I've checked it out since and it is correct ..same with Alba the Gaelic name for Scotland..Alba is the Scottish Gaelic word for Scotland, however you don't say it the way it is written. Instead it is pronounced 'Al-a-buh'.

I unfortunately fell for the anglisiced trap that is common in Irish and Scottish spelling and translation, names like Dalzell which have now dropped the orignal use of the scottish sound (yogh) i assumed Menzies had done the same.
